Actually Bavaria became part of Germany in 1870 IIRC. But at the same time it remained "Kingdom Bavaria" until 19-something.
Right.  I'm working from casual memory.  We're actually down to quibbling over technicalities...

Germany wasn't a real country until the treaty of Versailles; it was a linguistic/cultural/region label, mostly under the wildly-fluctuating Holy Roman Empire -which lasted until the early 1800s- and got divided between the Prussian Hohenzollerns and the Austrian Habsburgs when the HRE went away.

Like much in life, it's complicated...
