New forums and new board order
« on: October 24, 2014, 11:48:17 AM »
Civilization Beyond Earth has made planetfall.
We have new boards and we made some changes to the board order. I want to hear your opinion on these changes before make them permanent.

Speak up!
Please  :P
Anyone else feels like it's time to fix the faction graphics bug?

Looks good; depending on reception of BE we may want to change the order of BE and SMAC/X later, but for now it's good, as there are few enough BE boards that both show up at a convenient height.

All the forum sections should be collapsible like the CivBE one.

Please explain more the collapsable?

There is a nice "-" button that collapses the forum listing for the associated section. Very useful for collapsing sections of the forum that don't interest you, which allows more efficient access to those fora/sub-fora that do. Which, in turn, allows for more time for spamming content creation.

Oh wise necromancer of threads.

Posts go in the most appropriate thread on the first page. Which I considered to be this one as the context of the forum ideas thread seemed more related to content. /wisdomsharing

I should probably quote my latest thought on forum structure - that I posted in Bug/Patch for feedback...

I wanted to update on my latest thinking about BE's undeserved topping of the root in hopes for the future, and, in re-reading the thread to refresh my memory, I've taken Plotinus' thoughts about Bug/Patch to heart.

BE is on its way out.  I'm going to wait until the Rising Tide expansion is out for two or three weeks and results in little activity, if that happens, then throw it under all the SMACX into the Other Games category with Other Games and Pandora's Box.  Now, I do hope that someone will step up on the BE Beginner's Strategy Guide, and suspect it would be powerful googling-bait, and could make a difference, so don't get your hopes TOO high, but very probably Other Games before the year is out, depending on the timing of RT.

Now.  Whether to Move Bug/Patch up to root or to merge with Modding?  This could happen tomorrow if I get a flood of replies agreeing on one.  Bug/Patch is the workshop of the single hands-down biggest content asset to promoting this community, the .exe patches, and I'd put it under TOE and over Modding in the root, or in a merge, change the name to "Modding-Bug/Patch" and combine descriptions thus: "Imperative: Build/For .exe modders and the people who love them".

-Unless someone has a better idea.  Thoughts?

Incidentally, I'm not wild about the idea of making everything collapsible - I have more than enough trouble already getting people to participate in more than one part of the community, and this would be deadly to that.

Ah. I certainly can understand that and that thought did flutter across my mind after posting. Perhaps I should have posted in the minor annoyances thread instead; "I always have to keep scrolling past the smac section. :( "

What about multi-quote? Is that a feature of this forum software? I've found that to be a useful one.

What you do is, hit quote.  The post appears quoted in the quick reply box.  Do it on another post and it appears below the first.  -And so on.  Very simple.

Good question. ;b;

The SMF forum software we run isn't actually that inferior to the vBulletin most of the other place run - but the logic underlying the arrangement of the interface is decidedly a challenge to someone used primarily to vB.  I was an admin here for six months before I felt really comfortable with the citizen user interface and its functions, let alone the higher management tools.

I assume most members have a lot more experience than I did with non- vB, 'cause I don't get nearly as many complaints as I would expect from my own learning curve.
