Uno's random question time: What do you call this?
« on: September 26, 2013, 02:45:16 PM »
Scientificy article in the news made me grown when it called this a roly-polie.  I know that's one of the many common names, so curious with our wider range of residences here, what do you call this?

Since I asked, I'll go first.  Locally, they are known as "potato bugs".

Always known them as either a roly-poly or a pillbug, myself.  roly-poly when I was younger, pillbug now that I'm older. XD

i found bugs enough disgusting (expecially if we talking about eat them), but i try to respect them.

i think isn't correct called potato bug, here there's a kind called POTATO EATERS, really isn't a chaos marines legion of last foundation, and they have this appearance similar to the may-bug

i think it's infinite work cataloging bugs, there are more kinds than any other living form

That's a june beetle I'm unfamiliar with.  Female, judging by the antenna.  Would posit an initial guess at the Variegated june beetle, but the stripes might be TOO defined for that.  It's not a local species, so would have to dig up more.

Potato beetles are orange, not that deeper shading and have well defined spots on the thorax.

In relation to the original picture, I was interested to see what my family would say, so I sent them the picture and asked.  I got the same answers from everyone but my stepfather, who called it a wood louse.
