Huh.  I thought The Gold Bug was something of the first detective story...

That's a good idea about a Masque of the Red Death haunt.  Be tricky to stage the suspended burning, though, and also to do it safely.

Gold Bug? It's not much a detective story, but a treasure hunt, and you spend much of it wondering if the narrator is insane.  I guess "National Treasure" of it's time.  It's famous for the use of a cryptograph (IIRC there was a contest to anyone that could decipher it as well), however, and making cryptography popular.

I don't think I ever read that one, and may have been misled.

I don't think I've cracked open any non-poetry Poe in over 30 years.  The poetry has aged better because you expect a florid style with poetry.

Remember, genes are NOT blueprints. This means you can't, for example, insert the genes for an elephant's trunk into a giraffe and get a giraffe with a trunk. There are no genes for trunks. What you CAN do with genes is chemistry, since DNA codes for chemicals. For instance, we can in theory splice the native plants' talent for nitrogen fixation into a terran plant.
