Win8 to Win7 on same wifi, multiplayer won't work

I'm trying to multiplay with my housemate. We're both on the same wifi connection, but his is a Windows 8 machine and mine is Windows 7. I followed the guide stickied at the top of this section and even tried guides from other internet sites.

Is someone willing to help me figure this out? I can go through what steps I tried so you feel I made an actual effort.

I followed all of the instructions for the Hamachi connection, including turning off both firewalls on both machines. We can now ping each other through Hamachi but we still can't find each other's games, no matter who hosts.

Does anyone have any further ideas for us? Has anyone managed to succeed in getting a Win8 machine to link up and play with a Win7 machine?

are you using any of the available unofficial patches?

Yes. I believe both machines are fully patched up to matching patches so that both versions are the same. Would it help to de-install and re-install and re-do the patches just to be sure?

fully patched usually means SMAC 5.0 or SMAX 2.0+XP patch.

i'm talking about the patch made by scient and the others that are built upon it.

anyway, have you tried connecting without Hamachi?

I have the most recent Scient patch, yes. We tried connecting traditionally before the Scient patch. I've got the GoG game pack. That didn't work. We couldn't see each other at all.

I appreciate BUncle's vote of confidence, but multiplayer isn't my thing. I found this thread on the GOG SMAC forum that has a tip about connecting over Wifi. Another thought: Are both players using the GOG version of the game? Finally, some of the multiplayer vets here might have better ideas.

My brother and I briefly tried a wifi game and gave up. He has Win 8. I have Win 7. We decided instead to physically connect the machines with an ethernet cable. He couldn't host. I, however, could host. We didn't concern ourselves with IP addresses or firewall settings. We used kyrub's latest SMAC patch.

I'd start the game, and he'd find it.
