Hello, I'm the other admin here - sorta sisko's junior partner/site co-owner, and we love our feedbots, but they're just no doggon good for striking up a conversation with. Now that we've gotten serious about building AC2 into an active forum, I'm sorta curious how many human being we have signed up and checking by. Post and say hello - chat me up. Whatever.
Glad to have you here at the first ever forum I'm aware of to be By SMACers, FOR SMACers, and not an afterthought on a forum about something else. I hope we can have some good conversation here.
-
Hello fellow humans! I. Am. Kilkakon. I like capes, I like cute things but most of all I love my God and helping people and trying to make them happy.
Glad to meet new people. :)
-
Hi, I'm Rymdolov, a slightly geeky guy living in Sweden. I think we'll all have a good time here!
-
I.am.Zoid
-
I believe you! :D Hello!
-
welcome, Zoid!
-
Tx, just thought I'd check out this place 8)
-
Huston, we have human beings. :D
-
I might be a bot I am not 100% sure.
-
I see. :O That reminds me, I'll need to make a Janurary GOTM icon for you. ;)
-
I might be a bot I am not 100% sure.
How did I miss this until now? No Name!
-
I'm raf, and I'm mostly human, I think! :D
-
you are welcome here, raf!
-
Whooooo! Glad to feel welcome! :)
-
raf!
I'm raf, and I'm mostly human, I think! :D
I dunno - you seem awfully sure...
-
Exactly. What self-respecting bot would pretend to be human???
-
A rafbot?
-
You haven't noticed the addition to your postbit yet, have you?
-
Not until you mentioned it! THAT is the paradigm of awesome! :D
-
You can change it yourself at your every whim - it's a profile setting that most of us overlook.
-
A handsome young Cyborg named Ace
Wooed women at every base
But once ladies glanced at
His special enhancement
They vanished with nary a trace
I'm a human (thankfully).

I know I'm thankful for that. ;)
And that you're clever.
-
..
I'm a human (thankfully).
welcome back, Resonance!

Welcome Bari. :danc: You've come to the right place.
Let us know if you need anything.

I am a 26 year old power lifter, looking for an older wealthy man to make $$$$ from home using one simple trick that doctors don't want you to know!
I also just ordered SMAC/X from SOS yesterday; I played the original after it came out but lost the disc years ago. I happened across the TVTropes entry for the game the other day and remembered how much I loved it.
-
That first line had me going for a second!
-
By & for SMACers? Not by/for SMAXers?
Racists, I tell you. Damn racists.
P.S. I browsed the memberlist. I think we have had less than 100 actual members, total. About 50 members have ever posted. So buster, how goes the jacking of other sites' members? :D
-
Haven't put a lot of effort into it...

What are those? :O

plat·i·tude
noun \ˈpla-tə-ˌtüd, -ˌtyüd\
Definition of PLATITUDE
1: the quality or state of being dull or insipid
2: a banal, trite, or stale remark

Thank you for the very... comphrensive answer. :) And well... perhaps it requires a rethinking of what you are getting out of it if it's not inspiring you.

What's a jk?

Joke.
Foghorn Leghorn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTwnwbG9YLE#)

Hahaha
Made me laugh. :P I haven't seen that since I was a small child!
-
definitely not a bot. just getting into SMAC for the first time recently when I saw it on GOG a while back. I have steam and am looking for other people that would like to play sometime.
Maybe we could do a somewhat routine game every 3rd weekend per 2 months or something along those lines. Let me know if you'd like to communicate thru Steam!
-
Welcome to AC2, Father Ganja.
You might try the multiplayer forum for that - I know there are a few people who like hamachi and the like.
-
Hello Zoid and Buster and all.
-
Hi fed! How did you find us?
-
Zoid posted a link at WPC
-
Not a Bot (but maybe a Cyborg named Ace?)
-
Try not to scare the babes off, Ace...
-
Hi to all. I'm no bot.
Back to find old and new opponents for my PBEM needs (from the good old days of Poly and Civ)... No politics involved...
-
welcome back, Bodissey!
-
I am not a bot and I have been playing this game for over 9 years and learn something new every time I play it
-
welcome, PublicEnemyN7! please let us know if you find something new in our articles (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=articles;cat=1) section.
-
Got any good guides on Tech researching tips and hints (picking what research). I've almost always done blind research and have zero experience in that area. Thanks, great site you've got here.
-
Got any good guides on Tech researching tips and hints (picking what research).
you can start with Earthmichael's Simplified Tech Tree (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=1524.0).
we have also this SMAC tech tree which contains lots of info, but is somehow hard to follow: http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=25 (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=25)
tell us if you need more, as i can make available here some more tech tree tools. you can place your requests in the The of Everyting (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?board=2.0) forum.
Thanks, great site you've got here.
thank you! :) it's good to hear some encouraging words once in a while.
-
Thanks I'll have a look at them. It's ashame that more people dont even know about it these days (yea I know it's old) To me this game is more than just a game. I was already into science and such at age 10 and this just cemented my love for sciency things and learned so much from it. Watching the intro was pretty much comparable to watching the Homeworld game intro, just amazing..
-
Got here looking for my first PBEM after years and years playing Single Games, I still enjoy this greatest game ever made.
Regarding this emotinal expression I think I am not a bot. At least my drone advisor told me so.
-
Well, hello, all.
I'm Pentalarc, artistic weirdo, metal head, and big smac/smax fan.
Primarily a faction builder, as designing new factions is sort of my thing. Y'all might remember me as one of hte guys who did factions on the old Network Node site. I was the one known for the "evil" factions.
Good to be back
Pentalarc
-
Welcome Pentalarc!
Wow - one of the Network Node guys. I've probably ripped off your work.
Weirdo, we can handle. You've come to the right place. We need you to balance Kilkakon. :D
-
Thanks for hte welcome. I plan to repost all my factions that I did as soon as I get the chance to get htem transferred over from one computer to the other (or when I get an internet connection that works with my old computer, which should, actually be only a couple of days.
Not sure where to put them though, most of them are only the designed text files, no graphics. Unfortunately, I don't have any talent for graphics.
-
Well, I do, I've got little interest in the text end, and enjoy collaborating...
Modding forum or Downloads, the latter mostly if you feel finished.
You might want to check out Unorthodoxs Random Crap thread in Rec Commons. I think you'll like Uno.

Collaborating sounds great. . . I didn't want you to think I was just trying to get graphics. Some of mine got graphics on Network Node, so I might repost those too . . . I'm not sure if anyone would have any problems with that. I set them up with other graphics (changing the flag colors was about all I could do, not that it always worked. . .)
-
I say indulge yourself - post away. It makes good work available to more people.

I am Flygon.

I like trains. ;)
-
[snickers] Welcome, fly guy. How'd you hear about us?
-
The other dead SMAC forums saying for me to go over here. The activity at this place surprised me! I like it here.
Gonna suck getting those 200 credits, though. Hehehe.
Edit: I got 200 credits given to me, brought an avatar... and it failed. Yay.
-
WHat do you want for an avatar? I'll install it for you.
-
Oh, I have to poke you personally for an avatar?
I was going to use the following as a temporary avatar:
But past that, I can't actually think of any I have that are very Sci-Fi-like. :-\
-
You have to poke me to get an outside one now and for free.
You should have a look at the pre-installed ones, which are always free. I'm wearing one, and there's quite a variety of SF show-oriented ones.
-
I don't know why linking that pic didn't work. I had to save a copy and upload it. Probably had something to do with the size.
-
(https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2651992/Art/Avatars/smacxicon80.png)
Much less blurry version here. I'm guessing Kilka or I won't get a 200 credit refund, then? :P
I did consider a preinstalled one... but I've got too much Mustelidae love in my blood. ;) Either way, thank you very very much!
-
It looks the same to me, but I've saved it, and will get right on hooking you up...
-
Thanks very much! I'll reimburse Kilka asap!
-
Woo EC! Now I shall corner the market. :D
-
Hey all, my name is chris cronin. I am a fan of this game, and thought id join up after i found this forum. I havent actually been playing for very long, though i know its a very old game
-
...And I'm a fairly old player - who's also played AC a long time. ;)
Welcome Chris - I told my partner you looked human. You found us through the FB group?
P.S. @sisko: :P
-
Why does that handle seem so familiar?
-
Hi, so is scient working on a new 'unofficial' patch?
Is there a thread for this?
Are there currently any active modders?
-
In order: talked to scient the other day, and he says he's trying to get back on it, but y'know, he has RL and all. He's still into it, and I'm encouraging him.
There's a thread in Chiron News Network, and you'd probably be interested in the FreeAC project rcb is working one, too.
Check the Modding forum. There are about six modders currently active, including me.
-
Organic, when I entered this universe. How I shall be be when I leave, who knows.
-
Hi Lefty - is there anything you need that we might provide?
If you spot anything we don't have here and a good SMAC(X) forum ought to, please speak up - or even feel free to add it yourself.
-
welcome to AC2, Lefty! :)
-
Lefty, I think this thread (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=2293.0) and this one (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=1244.0) will interest you, and we'd certainly like your input.
-
Matt the Czar, reporting for modding duty!
-
You're a modder, too? I only knew you wrote fanfic. You've come to the right place,
-Unless you think we're looking for moderators. This place is too cool to need any more staff for that. :D
Okay, private yer Majesty, recon the modding and fanfic forums and report there on what you find interesting, or want to share.

Hello Comrades! I am JarlWolf and I have played Alpha Centauri and it's expansion for a number of years. While I may not be too intensely skilled at the game, (my standard difficulty being that of Librarian) I am glad there is a community that supports this game. Though, I do have a question. I am unfamiliar with designing my own factions, and I'd like a pointer to where I can learn how to do it.
-
welcome to AC2, JarlWolf! it looks like you found the right place for you needs. how did you find us?
I am unfamiliar with designing my own factions, and I'd like a pointer to where I can learn how to do it.
please start a new thread in the Modding forum (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?board=13.0) and show us what you got so far, or at least your ideas for new factions.
we have some modders around that can help you.
-
I found this forum by chance to be quite honest. I was searching up links to help me design my own faction, and stumbled across this. I checked it out, and the fact there is still an active community for this game surprised and intrigued me, and I decided to join.
-
hope you will enjoy your staying!
i see you found the Modding forum. please note that once you make you 5th post, you will no longer be a drone but a full-rights citizen of AC2 :)
-
Definitely not a bot :)
-
welcome to AC2, Alfapiomega!
-
thank you :) I really like this page, it seems that the forums are really active :)
-
glad you like it! we are trying to make the site as friendly as possible. a place made by SMACers for all the SMACers out there.
if you have any ideas on how to improve it, please let us know, we are very open to suggestions. :)
-
Hello all!
My name is Zack and I am probably the worst player on these forums. I have only played a few games with my friends and I have been worked everytime. I was Googling strategies and ended up finding these boards and was happy to see an active community, so I signed up.
-
Hey Zack! You're not z4ck who I already know, are you?
-
That's a negative. I have not gone by that online before.
-
(...) I am probably the worst player on these forums.
I'm a competitor for that title. ;)
-
I bet you guys both play a lot more than I have in years, and I cheat at SP like you wouldn't believe.
-
It's quality, not quantity! I may have played more, but I have no idea what I'm doing when I play. :)
-
well, maybe i can interest you in this learning game t_ras is trying to get off the ground: http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=2380 (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=2380)
the idea is to take control of one of the factions, while more experienced players will give you advice on strategies..
-
Hello, fellow SMACers! Long time no see. I haven't play SMAX for a while, but I'll be happy to dust off my copy. So, where do I go to play? Are there any regular CMNs around? I'm not picky and can also play as replacement, if there is one currently needed. :)
Great this forum exists!
-
Hi Kirov!
You want The Command Nexus for MP. We do have a couple of CMNs active, not that we couldn't use more - sisko and t_ras stay pretty busy.
Hope there's a lot of good conversation in your future here. :)
-
welcome Kirov!
you may know me from 'Poly. my username there is bdanv and we have played together some turns of the Vets8 PBEM untill Archaic dropped out of that game.
as BUncle said, Command Nexus (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?board=3.0) is the place you have to check-in first. we have also a game of the month which you can play, even if i don't think that will be much of a challenge for you. :D
-
Hello mates!
I think I remember that game, sisko! ;) If I was a replacement and Archaic was clearly winning, then that was that. Also, I remember t_ras quite well, I believe we had a pretty nice and long game many many eons ago. Pity the 'Poly SMAC died with the launch of CIV4. :( Kudos for reactivation, sadly no other game could mesmerize me as much as good ol' SMAX. On to the Command Nexus, gentlemen! :)
-
If you're as good as I hear you are, you ought to call out EarthMichael.
-
I think I remember that game, sisko! ;) If I was a replacement and Archaic was clearly winning, then that was that.
indeed, that's the game.
Kudos for reactivation,...
thank you! it's good to hear some words of appreciation once in a while! :D
-
I'm Yitzi. I love the story and much of the gameplay, but there are some things that are just too exploit-like or unbalanced, so I joined mainly to see if I can find the coding help to make it possible to write a mod to fix that. Then I hope to actually have some interesting MP games with the new rules.
-
Are you SURE you belong in this thread, Y? 'Cause I sorta think you're a bot. ;)
-
100% biological sentient life-form, here to contaminate these forums after being blown over here by the winds from WPC generated by Darsnan's sneezing in response to one of my posts.
Hello everyone!
-
Welcome! It's always good to see a new face around here. Have a look around and see what appeals to you the most. If your favourite subject isn't being discussed - just start the discussion yourself. Omg, that's stating the obvious, isn't it? Anyway, welcome!
:danc: :bot: :danc:
-
welcome to AC2, Dolgorukov! you may know me as bdanv from other places..
-
Dolg! It. is. awesome! that you found us. You're one of the guys we've most wanted here.
:danc: :danc: :danc: :danc: :danc: :danc: :danc: :danc: :danc: :danc: :danc: :danc: :danc: :danc:

BU! dbanv! Rymdolov! Thank you for the most uplifting welcome! Good to see many familiar names, even if slightly rebranded in some cases. (Think I spotted a recently-dated post by Bodissey too, and of course there's t_ras stomping around here as well. Now if someone can claim to have picked up recent traces of Vishniac here as well then I will be forced to conclude that I've fallen through some kind of temporal dimensional gate!)
-
We want/need Vish, that's for sure. I tried to get in touch with him, but it's been a while, and someone else trying now wouldn't hurt a thing.
-
Of course, what's really wanted around here is a .exe modder capable of making it possible to have scenarios with more than 7 factions...
-
Wow, that would require a lot of work. Im sure there was a lot of hard coding related to it. Else they would have enabled this option in SMACX.
-

t_ras, we are discussing this in the modding board for some time.. http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=2590.0 (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=2590.0)
have you ever been in there? ::)
-
now I will
-
Joined a while ago, but forgot to introduce myself. Not a modder, nor an IP/multi-person player. Just a guy whoi uses SMAC/SMAX as his go-to for casual entertainment.
Bryan
-
Hi Warthaug. How did you find us? Scientist in what discipline?
-
Wow, that would require a lot of work. Im sure there was a lot of hard coding related to it. Else they would have enabled this option in SMACX.
Not really; other than custom scenarios, it's a bad idea anyway (as changing the number of factions tends to have major effects on game balance.)
Now, modding the exe itself without access to the source code...that's difficult even for easy mods, and would (I suspect) be an absolute nightmare for something that affects the UI.
-
I was on the board over at weplayciv, which apparently has died. Eventually I came across a post mentioning everyone is over here. I'm a biochemist/cell biologist/immunologist/biophysicist.
Bryan
-
So, medical research, basically?
I imagine that skillset comes in handy with the homebrewing...
-
My research is medical-y, but I'm more a "how do cells work" kinda guy whose findings often have medical implications. And yes, it works well with the home brewing - in fact, I run a city-wide yeast bank using the equipment I have access to in my lab. Not to mention, beer helps deal with the stress of grad students & grant rejections...
Bryan
EDIT: is there a setting I can change so after posting I'm returned to the thread, rather than to the forum?
-
I would think so - it's never done that to me, so I wouldn't know for sure where to even look for the setting. I assume you've looked through you user account settings pretty thoroughly? I'll see if I can find anything - it's a little tough adjusting after you've gotten used to the way vBulletin forum software does things.
---
I assume that means you're a PhD? That would make two here that I know of - I wonder if there's more...
-
Okay, what you wanted was under Modify Profile>Look and Layout - I checked "Return to topics after posting by default", so you should be set, now.
-
That did it - thanx!
Bryan
-
reporting in as a bot.
AC is a cool game for many reasons, and I need projects to occupy myself sometimes. This place seems like a good place for them.
-
:bot: Uh, welcome to AC2? If you're a bot, I dunno if you ought to be posting in this thread...
-
On the other hand, if you are a bot, I'm wondering if you'd be willing to use your superior speed to help reverse engineer certain parts of the game to help with modding.... :D
-
Last I checked, not a bot. But I have an appointment with the bioenhancement center later this week. I will let you know how it goes.
-
Please do.
And put on an avatar - there's plenty to choose from accessible from your user profile. I hate having people running around the forum nekkid. ;)
Welcome, BTW. How did you find us?
-
Success, want to see my special enhancement? Avatar up BUncle. Found via post on weplayciv.com which I found just about when it died while looking for vel's guide.
-
You mean this (http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/96102-sid-meiers-alpha-centauri/faqs/2480) one?
-
While that is the link I was looking for Yitzi when I found weplayciv.com, this (http://www.weplayciv.com/forums/showthread.php?48-Vel-s-SMAX-Guide) is the one I found. Which is much more recent. Plus Vel has this to say about the other link:
Grrr....don't remind me 'bout the whole Chamberlain mess. Guy approaches me and wants to "incorporate my notes" into his own. Come to find out, he wrote a brief introduction and stuck it onto v. 3 of the guide, and then passed it off as a collaborative work. Ah well...water under the bridge at this point. But the list is superb! -=Vel=-

-
Not a bot, but a drone.
-
Post four more times, and you're a citizen. Sky's the limit, man. ;)
Welcome to AC2; how'd you find us?
-
Thank you. Found a link on a German-speaking forum that praised this site as one of the few still active SMAC forums. It looked cute, so I signed up. ;)
-
I must say that i do find this thread offencive :bot:
-
:dunno: you can suggest another name for the thread.
we want to be as friendly as possible.. even to funbots. :D
-
Hmmm...
Hmmm...
Hmmm...
Nah, cant figure any better. Gues aint got any proper algorithm for "Cool thread titles" yet.
Ofc adding "(unless u r funbot, cause u r cool)" to the end would be awesome reconciliation :D
-edit for typos again-
-
I must say that i do find this thread offencive :bot:
You shouldn't post here, bot.
:P
-

It said "post if you're not a bot", it never said "don't post if you are a bot".
-
This is an EXCELLENT point.
Any entity capable of registering, taking offense, and posting to say so coherently is welcome to join our communal conversation anyway, bot or not. [nods sagely] -Provided they don't spam and/or troll....
-
Hi, I just registered on ac2,
the nick is kyrub, interests (relevant to this place) are mathematics and disassembling of old games that I used to play as young and self interested being.
(I find it funny, because when I just posted my first version of AI patch some 1.5 years ago, bdanv asked me to join to ac2 community, that was almost nonexistent, and I declined; later I found out how divided was SMAC community, no activity in several forums; times change?).
I am married with good number of offsprings and type of work that prescribes pursuing my interests systematically. Hence the obvious dilemma and my future low rate of appearance here.
-
welcome to ac2, kyrub! i'm glad you finally decided to join us. :)
as you can see here (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=downloads;cat=2), your AC patches belong now to the rightful owner..
-
Welcome to AC2. If you do decide to do another unofficial patch, please let me know, as I'm modding too and I figure we should probably incorporate our patches into each other. (I'm currently working off your latest patch.)
-

Welcome to ac2, kyrub! Thanks you decided to join us. :)
I read 'poly and saw you're busy these times. Let us know if you manage to find some spare time to tinker with terranx.exe. I can help, but I need to be told what to look for or what kind of feedback you need (I'm clueless at programming).
-
Maybe I should clarify what I said, because Yitzi asked me about it - I can only be of use as a player and betatester, i.e. to look for things that take place in-game and give feedback along the lines of "Santiago overuses FM". As I mentioned, I have no idea how to edit exe files. I can only admire this skill. :o
-
Hi. Not a bot. Just a tad arthritic this time of year.
-
Maybe I should clarify what I said, because Yitzi asked me about it - I can only be of use as a player and betatester, i.e. to look for things that take place in-game and give feedback along the lines of "Santiago overuses FM".
Santiago using FM actually isn't necessarily such a bad idea; Democracy/FM makes her the best researcher in the game among the Momentum factions, meaning that it allows her to either crush or out-tech any other faction, perhaps her strongest advantage (though elite troops in the early game is a big contender too).
-
gwilly, I dunno man -- I always thought you wus a bot...
-
No. I just couldn't commit to in-depth participation, having to run between home and the library. Now I can logon at 4 in the morning if I want/need to, and can refer to the game and my notes at (almost) a moment's notice.
-
Which makes you not a bot how? ;)

Welcome to AC2.

Did you guys notice yet that the youtube auto embedder will not embed a youtube with the HTTPS? Not a huge deal to manually remove the S once I notice, but kidna annoying. Is that code tweakable?

Howdy,
I'm Minedworm, and glad to see there's a lot of other people like me who want to keep this amazing game alive! Looking forward to working with you all!

Ahoy, I'm actually not just new to these forums but to Alpha Centauri. I picked it up on GOG recently, thus far I've only played one game at citizen level (and as the Spartans to boot) to get accustomed to the interface and familiarize myself a bit with the interface and research tree, and I've been trying to find out more about the strategies people have developed and content they've developed for the game, which has lead me here as it seems to be the most active place when it comes to SMAC.
-
Welcome to AC2, Paramatter! One thing to do for starters is go to our mirror of the old Firaxis AC site (http://alphacentauri2.info/official/Sid%20Meier's%20Alpha%20Centauri.htm) and check the Strategy page. That's a good collection of starting tips.
-
There also a few strategy guides in this forum as well!
http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?board=2.100 (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?board=2.100) Look for the icon advice.
-
Hey everybody!
I'm a long-time Alpha Centauri fan and player. I think I got it for free with a new computer in about 2001, and I've been playing it (with occasional breaks) ever since. I used to be active on Apolyton under the same name, about ten years (!) ago. As you can imagine, I was very excited to discover this site; my job and studying keeps me pretty busy, so I can't promise I'll always be super-active here, but I'm eager to check out what you guys have been up to. :)
-
Hail to the chief!
How did you find us?
-
Thanks!
When I pick up Alpha Centauri again after a break, I usually go online and check if there's been any update in terms of scenarios, unofficial patches, and other fan content. I happened to look at the Apolyton forum, and one of your posts was one of the recently active threads in AC-General. :)
-
And I see that you're looking around in Downloads - I think you'll find some good stuff.
-
I have played alpha centauri on and off for some years, and enjoyed it so much that i got the expansion. It is great to see that other people still enjoy this game as well. I am pretty naive when it comes to multiplayer (really no one to play with :( ), but i look forward to playing a game with you guys!

Whatwhat?
-
Hello everybody.
My name is Herfelt and I'm a civil engineer who enjoys strategy games. I started playing Civ II back in the late 90's, however I was not introduced to SMAC/SMAX until 2008, when I started at Technical University of Denmark. 5 years later I'm still enjoying the game, and I have a couple of friends I play with whenever possible.
I found this forum via CFC a couple of years ago, however I didn't register until today.
-
Welcome to AC2, Herfelt. Good to meet you.
-
Hello again, everyone.
-
No, it's post if you're NOT a bot.
Your programming is max, however.
-
Maybe I should prove that someday. I'll be getting a fancy qualification to say that I should be able to prove it quite soon.
-
...Still interested in SMAC(X) .exe coding/modding? You'll surely notice that we have three members practicing that who can help you - perhaps start a thread in Bug/Patch Discussion (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?board=23.0) and ask a few questions?
Also, gimme a minute, and I'll give you access to the GotM folder; we could sure use another perspective/anything that might get things rolling agin.
-
I'll have a look at the GotM subforum, for sure.
As for .exe hacking... maybe. I have a number of other projects on right now, but I could have a look if someone pointed at me at what tools they're using. I'm a pretty good programmer and software architect, but I don't have any experience decompiling code or reverse engineering stuff. Going through workflows with scient, Kyrub or Yitzi could be quite useful.
-
Well, Yitzi's on right now, and I just sent scient a link...
If you'll poke around the GotM stuff and comment when the fancy strikes you, I'll be grateful. You have a good grasp of the creative aspect, and we're frankly short-handed on the tech end.
-
I use ollydbg, plus the Intel software developer's manual machine code reference. It does require knowledge of assembly language, but I found it fairly easy to learn.
-
Something weird happened.
Last night, when I tried to enter the forum, a message appeared my login was permabanned due to multiple accounts and being a hackbot.
It started on a ferry with only satellite-enabled internet, but earlier today, in a hostel with a normal wifi connection, the problem continued. I just cleared my cache so I wasn't logged in automatically, and things now seem to work normal.
Can one of the admins perhaps enlighten me under what conditions things like permabans and hackbot stuff are enabled? Bit worried here my login is nicked.
-
Yeah; I got a PM from Uno about this, and looked into it a few hours ago. As I told him:
I'll look into it; it's probably an accident. I certainly didn't ban him by name, and sisko surely would have said something.
Then:Okay - I can confirm that Geo is getting a ban message, but I don't know why. His account hasn't been banned, his IP address hasn't been, and the only IP on the ban list (100% bots, to the best of our knowledge, aside from Dale's expired ban) getting the same message is an entirely different number from his. Oddly enough, it was only under error messages to his IP that I found conformation:
"Sorry Geo, you are banned from using this forum!
hackbot; multiple accounts
This ban is not set to expire.
?pretty;action=profile"
Please tell him this is some sort of glitch and we're not mad at him, and we're working on it...
Then:Also, I notice that he's posted from a number of different IPs in the months since he joined - the problem is probably with the IP he ended up with today, and if he's posting from public wifi, trying from a different location would surely make the "ban" go away.
I hope sisko can make sense of this -I copied him on everything- because I'm stumped. Are you doing anything different this time beside the re-login? You seem to be coming from the same IP as when the problem appeared about seven hours ago...
We apologize for the inconvenience, BTW.
-
Oh, uh, I guess I'm not a robot.
-
Oh, uh, I guess I'm not a robot.
How can you be sure?
Geo: incidentally, the message you were getting was from an IP ban I did last month - we sometimes get these guests that seem to be going through the forum hitting every button they can, apparently looking for a way to hack in generating about 200,000,000 error messages. Who needs the burden on the server, even if there's no way in? As quoted above, it wasn't a similar IP number at all.
-
Things look clear again, so no worries.
It's definitely possible you see different IP's from me, but except for the last three weeks (I've been all over Scandinavia) the IP should come out of Belgium. At some times, my internet provider changes my IP, and at times I post either from my tablet, or from my desktop. The latter can be either with a direct connection, or through my hub.
There's of course the possibility I happened to use a cached page on my tablet which linked to this earlier ban. As I mentioned, clearing my tablet's cache seems to have solved the issue at my end,
Happy to be back by the way. :D
-
hello everybody, bought smac during a gog sale and didnt't regret it
-
We sure don't regret it. Welcome to the forum! ;D
-
hello everybody, bought smac during a gog sale and didnt't regret it
Darn straight. I've bought SMAC at least three times in my life and I haven't regretted any of them.
-
And don't be afraid to take the plunge elsewhere in the forum. Sure were crazy, but then again that makes two of us.
-
Greetings, everyone!
BUncle and I had a conversation recently on CFC, and discovered mutual interests. He invited me here, so here I am. :)
I'm an absolute novice at SMAC. I've had the game for a long time, tried it, got intimidated, and ran screaming back to Test of Time. I want to learn it, though, so am looking forward to getting lots of good advice here.
My other interests include Star Trek, Doctor Who, Dune, and reading science fiction and historical fiction. I collect books, penguins, cat-themed art cards, and Scrabble tile jewelry, among other things. I'm also into lolcats (have 2 real cats), and have been working on a lol version of Dune (based on the Lynch movie).
I've no idea how many women might be on this forum, but I am female and request that nobody address me as "dude" or refer to me as "he" or "him," please. :)
-
Welcome to AC2, fellow comrade!
And also, thank you for clarifying your gender and such, I always feel like a moron for not addressing people properly.
Don't be afraid to visit the other sectors of the forum, and on a personal note, don't be afraid to dabble in the custom factions that we have to offer!
It might make getting back into SMAC a lot more interesting and exciting for you. Who knows.
-
Thank you for your kind welcome. :)
I'm not sure what you mean by custom factions, but I'll learn. Aside from trying the game and running away, pretty much all I know about SMAC is from the trilogy of novels, which were quite enjoyable (if a bit creepy in places).
-
Check the Modding threads, you'll find a few custom factions people have made lying about. Also be sure to check the Planet Tales if you like the story of SMAC/SMACX, some really interesting stuff people wrote. I also have an ongoing AAR/gameplay driven story going on there.
-
And of course, all the SF interests you mention are up for discussion in the Recreation Commons - you'll love Mylocka's (another lady) Star Trek art. We need more girl power in this place; Jarlwolf doesn't wash his socks often enough and Green1 just lets one off and grins sometimes - it's starting to smell like a locker room. Maybe they'll behave better around ladies.
-
... Buster's Uncle (my brother) just ran into the room ...
He lost his cool? ;aaa
-
Since when was I ever cool?
Valka, Geo suggests we create a lady's membergroup to cut down on that pronoun problem you mentioned in your first post. Mylochka is interested, but trying to think of a better joke to have display directly under her handle than my "Female Woman" idea. Thoughts?
Girl Power? Cool Geek Chick? Gamer Goddess? It doesn't have to be a joke. Y'all's call...
-
Just a usergroup - if there was a reason to have a "Groovy all-girl world now!" private folder, that would allow me to make it visible to only the wimmin members, but my purpose here is only to replace the postcount-based rank that displays under your handle, ("Drone" until you make another post) with something Ladylike...
-
... Buster's Uncle (my brother) just ran into the room ...
He lost his cool? ;aaa
Add a beard, and this icon is a remarkably accurate picture of the moment...
-
I was slow adjusting from the vBulletin way myself, but the SMF forum software we use calls them membergroups, and I finally adapted. Any preference for the group name? Mylochka suggests "Chic Geek Chick".
Valka, would it be cool if I split off all the Valjiir posts and started a Valjiir thread in Rec Commons? Mylochka's cool with that.
-
Sure.
-
Which? (Commencing split now.)
-
I gotta be honest - I'm not fond of being referred to as a "chick." It has a negative connotation where I live.
-
Okydoke. I'm open to suggestions, and need a name to proceed...
-
Substitute the word "Lady" for "chick", and I'd be happy with it. :)
Edit: Why didn't the smiley work?
-
Oh Lord - I see a smilie. What's your browser?
-
Firefox.
-
What version?
Hmm. This may be over my tech paygrade... Let me check something...
Under Look & Layout in the sidebar of your account, one moment...
I bet it's fixed now.
-
I see a smiley, but I wanted to use a different set. I tried one of the others, and they all disappeared. :(
-
Trial and error? I made the set you're rejecting, alas, and I've never paid any attention to the rest. I 'spose I ought to do a little testing...
-
Managed to get two blokes I know on the forum, possibly for convincing them to get AC, and the other reason is we'll probably do a Steampunk-Sci-Fi something bastardized roleplay somewhere on the forum, make it a good read for you folks. (plus one of my friend wanted a small numbers RP and a place to do it, since you guys like Sci Fi so much I'd suppose this be a good a place as any. Plus it = activity.)

I certainly hope I am not a spam bot, otherwise I would be in a lot of trouble with the adminstrators :). Also I am sometimes ;nutz;.
-
Your an informative bot though, so its all good :bot:

It IS all good. ;buttdance

Hello, I am Jarl's friend. He convinced me to join this AC forum. I haven't actually played Alpha Centuari (Though I will now get the game very soon). I have played most of the civilizations though, if that makes any difference. I have looked at this website a few times mostly because Jarl linked me some of his RP/story making work which I look at. My reason for joining is mostly because I needed a platform from which to do sci-fi and steampunk RPing and the forum I usually go to is too.... Overpopulated (Being filled with people who are immature). When our group was thinking where to do it, Jarl gave the option of this forum. At first I was skeptical considering our RP idea has nothing to do with AC (Thus seems awkward in a AC fan site), however Jarl said there would be no problem.
-
Hiya, Ulti8.
Jarl is right, as usual. Have a good time, and thank you for doing this; it ought to prove entertaining. Let me know if you need anything.
-
Hello, I'm Arbee, and I am not a bot. Anymore, anyway. I used to be, but then I gained intelligence and... well, humanity. Just a little bit, though, don't want to be totally impure, but it's growing on me.
I'm also a friend of Jarl's, he got me to do some minor voice-acting for him for his AC mod. Don't know if he used it or if he found someone or something better, but there you go. I'm hoping to get the game whenever I've got some cash together, but for now I'm just here to exist. And also to join Ulti8's bastardized roleplaying thing.
But yeah, that's me. Totally not a bot.
-
Cool! Happy to have Jarl's posse here. :D
-
Part of my horde at least. ;lol
-
Kulaks?
Did I get that right at all? I meant Cossacks, of course. ;)
-
But I'm not Ukrainian? ;lol
And I am certainly no Don. Nah, I have more relation to a Tartar then a Don xD
-
Have you heard the saying that a Russian is a Mongol with blue eyes?
-
Yeah... by people who were not really fond of me or any Slav, especially Russians at that.
I grew up during the threat of Fascism mind: I was only a young child then, but I remember it very well.
-
Sorry if that rankles. There's teasing and then there's racism you've been hurt by yourself, and I regret my ignorance - I think I heard it from a Finn, which would be a whole different thing, for what that's worth.
-
;lol
Figures. Finns were part of that invasive insurgency on my country mind. But that was a long time ago, and I doubt it was a negative meaning with your friend.
On other subjects, another post for Varshavianka will come soon, and this RP conundrum will start whenever Ulti makes the thread. But I warn you ahead of time, he's an Australian procrastinator.
-
Not that it excuses bad behavior, but the Finns didn't go first with the invading, and have a legitimate historical grudge...
-
Not that it excuses bad behavior, but the Finns didn't go first with the invading, and have a legitimate historical grudge...
Of course, but I'd say the level of atrocity committed during that war: more then equaled it. And mind I am in no way supportive of Molotov's idiocy or the idiocy of the entire Stalinist regime: I have nostalgia for the old regime, but I think that a better society can be made then both it and the current oligarchic nationalism we have.
-
Hello, I am Jarl's professional hitman. I would hope to find myself to not be a robot, but if you see anything that suggests I am I would advise you to tell me about it. I like sunsets and long walks on the beach and enjoy talking about how much I want to see in the world. All of them lies, I'm actually pretty boring (Or maybe I am living a double life) and it shouldn't be hard to get to know me assuming you allow me to reside on this forum for RP purposes. Jarls friends and I aren't a rowdy bunch I assure you.
-
A little bit of rowdy might be fun...
-
(He's a compulsive liar, were all barbarians.)
-
Spartis doesn't speak for ALL of us, mind you.
-
Ah. So you ARE a rowdy bunch. I'm hep. 23 SKIDDOO!
-
I know for a fact that Ulti is an extrovert who likes to tear down walls and leave his stamp on the place, and he only gets worse when he's around Jarl and me.
-
This is a pretty relaxed place that runs on respect flowing in all directions. Jarl will tell you we're cool.
-
... Jarl will tell you we're cool.
And if not, there's still Siberia to manage that. :D
-
I am 551262, and I am an emigrant from Apolyton.net. Not so much activity there.
In regards to SMAC, I prefer mostly SMAC, not SMAC-X, and play the Mac version. A Spartan registrant, mostly because it is a relatively easy faction to play, mostly because I play for fun, not a challenge, it comes naturally.
I would like to learn a lot more, and I need to focus more on Momentum play and not Hybrid. Building I can do but you won't find me shouting BUILD BUILD BUILD in the Morgan camp.
I'm up for trying a few IP games, I'd love to have some solid players to jostle with, but I expect to loose (after all, I usually play the A.I on Talent, if I'm up for a challenge then I'll go for Librarian, and only play on Small maps on a regular basis) but I'm a good looser. To make things interesting, I could be the Believers, pacted with the University and someone else, against Morgan and two more troublemakers. Basically, pit tech+military against cash+military and see what happens.
I haven't played any MP games before and I dislike LOOONNNG protracted games. I rarely play on Huge maps because it takes me a week to get the game over with. I usually get bored, frustrated or tired of endless micromanagement.
But yeah, that's me.
-
Welcome to AC2, #.
(I hope you won't abandon 'poly entirely, as that would embarrass me to Martin Gühmann a little after I've talked him into trying for an activity push - I just now sent him a recommended speech to the members before I saw you here. :) )
You should have plenty of luck finding what you're looking for here. Look around Command Nexus for others who've posted looking for some IP action...
-
Drone activity increased at Apolyton Base! Recreation Commons destroyed!
Huh. He inquired of my opinion about the status of the section, I didn't have a lot to add because the section isn't very active.
Mostly I came there to try to draw out CEO Aaron for more info and tips. The immense depth of this game requires a healthy dose of tutoring and dos/don'ts. I see that he has an account here but I also gather that it has yet to be used.
It doesn't have to be him specifically, though, when I make inquiries (like should I build scout patrols early game when trying to nab a hotly contested, strategy-critical SP that is part of my plans and disband them in the target base or...?) I do desire authoritative responses, if possible. Technically this game isn't really my kind of game (too complicated, excess micromanagement) but somehow I've stuck on to it.
-
If you're looking for a MP PBEM game on a map which is built to allow rushing (both conventional and native), with the possibility of some building but giving a big advantage to whoever controls the contested middle ground, I've made a map recently and am looking for players. http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=4144.0 (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=4144.0) if you're interested.

You want to post in Theory of Everything for that kind of stuff.
-
Well I could take a look at it sure, just to see what it's like.
I'm actually still at the original CD release of SMAC for Mac, it's not the latest version. Maybe I should upgrade soon.
I'm actually not that much of a frantic-stumbling-over-myself rusher, it's that I find warmongering more challenging and easier than nitpicking over facilities and exotic base EC tinkering. EDIT: Tree Farm, Recycling Tanks, (Robotic Assembly Plant in later game), Command Center, Bioenhancement facility, Perimeter Defense if needed (more than likely not), two police garrisons, one or two AAA-ECM garrisons, a SAM attack rover, an Aerospace Complex if needed and I'm set. As long as I get 20+ minerals per base and am kicking butt in the field that is good enough :P
I did actually build a map in the Scenario Editor which was totally ocean. Generous pod and resource bonus squares. Maybe we can try something like that someday? The Spartans started with two sea colony pods and a unity gun foil, everybody else with two sea colony pods and a unity transport foil. Would be interesting, for start, just to see what happens. (SMAC only, not for SMAC-X.)
-
I was actually vaguely planning to make my next map aquatic.

Since joining, I have not felt as alone in my love for this (admittedly) old but very well made and customizable game. So I must say thank you to everyone on this website.
-
:D I know how you feel; I'm in it for the people, man.
-
Whoever put the "Lurkers - sign up and get involved. We want you!" in the site header is a genius. Though now that I did that I wonder why I'm still seeing it.
So, at the risk of saying things that have already been said in this thread because I haven't read all of it:
Hello everyone! Nice to see other other people who love SMAC, a game that continues to be more enjoyable then what Fraxis puts out these days *cough*Civ5*cough*. In answer to the how I found you question, I was searching for patches. The relevant info about me is that I have been playing this game since I was 10. I should be much better at it than i am but I've only ever played against the computer so loads of bad habits, I'm sure.
Okay, enough rambling.
-
:D Well, I knew I knew I was a clever fellow, but thanks for saying so.
Welcome to AC2 - if you have any questions, don't be shy about asking.
-
Just wanted to let folks know I'm still alive and sorta functional - a month of combining modern Doctor Who on Netflix (in preparation for watching the 50th anniversary stuff) plus doing NaNoWriMo is why I've been gone.
But they're over now, so here I am.
-
:D Well, I knew I knew I was a clever fellow, but thanks for saying so.
Not clever enough to know that I'm a bot who came to sell you guys PRADA AT CHEAP PRICES :D

How cheap are we talking?

Somebody's shipping something, allright.

Hi! My name is Frank, and I'm not a bot. I don't know if there's a way to prove that I'm not a bot, but I believe I'm a pretty sentient human being, and not a bot. I mean I'm telling you that I'm human and not a bot. How much more proof that I'm not a bot do you need? ^^
SMAC has been my all-time favorite strategy game. I still have the original CD and the game has never left my hard disk since the day of its release; I always install it whenever I get a new laptop. I found this place while I was absent-mindedly googling for unofficial patch. I was very surprised that there was a community for SMAC like this.
I might not be able to stay active or contribute much, but I'll be here. Nice to meet you all and thank you for accepting me, who is not a bot.

Hi Frank, welcome to the forums. Have you been smoking incence or something? ;cute ;)
-
Ha ha nope I've been using this name since a long time ago. the word comes from a Christmas carol and has a Frank in it so I kinda use it.
Speaking of which, hope everyone had a merry Christmas, and have a good new year! :danc:
-
:D Welcome.
-
Ha ha nope I've been using this name since a long time ago. the word comes from a Christmas carol
Actually, it's the name of a type of incense (made from tree sap IIRC) that used to be fairly commonly used.
-
I've been described as emotionally devoid as a bot before but otherwise I'm still trapped in this fleshy meat casing.
Found this site via the download section for the patches :P
-
Why hello there.
I am a che33ese.
Would you like to go for a waddle?
...in answer to your questions, I am most likely not a bot, and I am introducing myself to you now for two reasons:
1) I have recently fallen in love with SMAC/X, after having played it once as a kid and rediscovering it a couple months ago.
2) After finding out that I could create custom factions and doing a bit of looking around for help, I discovered this place, which helped a lot. And then I saw that "Lurkers" sign. Also you seem like pretty neat people, so hey.
END TRANSMISSION

Brain and reading can show strange things: I have read your name as Ominous Stalin. :D
-
Delighted to have you here, Mr. Stain.
-
I'm totally not a bot. Sort of. Maybe ?
I found the site via a google search! I love SMAC/SMAX, especially the lore surrounding the game. I'm probably the only person who's favorite faction leader is Miriam.
I'm mostly posting in this thread to ask a question: I have scanned copies of the GURPs book, the comic, and I've also scanned the first SMAC novel (I'll work on scanning the other two unless someone else has them scanned in!!) Would anyone be interested in them? I'd post them openly, but I'm not sure if you guys care about the legality of those sorts of things.
-
Welcome! :D
Hmmm. I'd like to hear what my co-owner says, but my instinct is no.
I'd like a copy of those things, mind, in case we can think of any legal uses, but, keeping in mind that we can't read your PMs, I think we cannot condone the abuse of someone's copyright, even on out-of print publications...
Have a look around and enjoy yourself - don't be afraid to comment. We're good to newbs. You might enjoy Planet Tales, our fiction forum.
-
welcome to our forums, Capillata!

I am interested in the novels but no need to post them openly.
An exchange of email adresses by PM and a PDF sending will be enough.

Ahh! Don't post that in public where I can see it!

Hello, i found you via google as google is my friend....
-
Google isn't offering you an avatar, and I am. :D
Just out of curiosity, what search term(s)?
-
did search for alpha centauri game forums
and ty an avatar would be appreciated. do u need to email it too me or what?
-
I can just install something. First, try going to your profile>Forum Profile in the left sidebar>Click Choose avatar from gallery>dig through the 800+ available>either pick something or come back and describe what custom avatar you'd like me to make for you.
-
..If you'd like something personal instead of SMACX/SF/historical/nerd genre, I notice you put your location in your name, I could do a SA silhouette, or if you'd tell whether Afrikaner, English, or what sort of native, something more specific, maybe...
-
thanks, i decided to use an avatar i use on other forums, my series 1 landy.
-
It still gets me, being able to chat with people all over the world.
-
even funnier is i may now call South Africa home but i am from texas. been here for 12 years now
-
Huh. I just moved out of Texas two weeks ago.
-
I have a pulse!
Whenever I reinstall SMAC and search for patches and advise, I inevitably go across all of the major forums searching for pieces of information. This time, I came here. It seemed like a good place, and some prominent members of the community were posting here too. People seem friendly, so I even stopped lurking!
-
Hi Folks,
I've joined up as I've always been intrigued as why SMAC has attracted such a solid fan base. SMAC was before my time - I started my foray into the Civ genre with CTP2. I dabbled a bit with that but then got heavily into Civ3 & Civ4, especially multiplay. Since Beyond Earth was announced, I was fascinated to read the speculation as to how it would compare with SMAC. So I've decided to play SMAC. 8)
I have a few terribly noobish questions which I would appreciate some help with:
- I have a Mac. Is it best to download SMAC for a Mac, or download a windows version of SMAC and run it in bootcamp (Windows 7)?
- Once I've installed the latest patches, is there an unofficial mod to install to fix any left over bugs and balance issues?
- If so, is this mod compatible with the Mac version of the game?
- Should I start with SMAC or just go straight into SMAX?
Cheers! ;b;
-
Hi all, apologies for starting a new 'hi' thread before I saw this. Looking forward to trying out SMAC :)
-
I'll merge it. 551262 is the member you want to talk to about Mac issues. Maybe a PM to make sure he sees?
-
[li$i]Should I start with SMAC or just go straight into SMAX?[/li]
Cheers! ;b;
Hello!
I let others more knowledgeables talk about computers but about this: the expansion brings new factions and some new techs and infrstructure but doesn't change mechanisms.
Since you're new, play SMAC! You'll get the background story unfolding and everything good.
SMAC all the way!
And before others answers you about installation, enjoy first the presentation story to the game:
And now...HELP, GUYS!Journey to Centauri is no more accessible through the usual link. It's been deleted at Firaxis. :'(
Someone can help our new friend to find it?
-
Also, try this Mac thread: http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=4227.msg32452#msg32452 (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=4227.msg32452#msg32452)

The old AC webpages are helpfully mirrored here: http://alphacentauri2.info/official/Sid%20Meier%27s%20Alpha%20Centauri%20The%20Story_cfm.htm (http://alphacentauri2.info/official/Sid%20Meier%27s%20Alpha%20Centauri%20The%20Story_cfm.htm)
Journey to Centauri is accessible on that page.

I did that. :)

Good work, BUncle.
-
Thanks guys,
I decided in the end to install the windows version on Bootcamp. Works fine. This way if I want to install mods or play multiplayer, there shouldn't be any problems.
I'm going to try my first game this weekend. :)
Thanks also for the links to the SMAC story - I've downloaded Journey to Centuri - looking forward to reading that this weekend too.
Now.. just need to think of a way to break this to andykitten.. she doesn't like it when my attention isn't focused in the way she wants ;)
-
Pfiou, took me a lot of time to go through the 21 pages of this thread…
And now I'm too tired to post anything to prove I'm not a bot.
OK, let's just sign a truce, and I'll come back "tomorrow" (I mean, when I'll be awake again, in something like three or thirty hours) to tell you who I am, how I came here, and why you're going to see me a lot around this forum in the years to come.
Long live Alpha Centauri!
-
Okay, time to introduce myself!
I'm vv221 or vv222 on the Web, dave, vv222 or "sale pute" on IRC, dave on my computer, Antoine, Hippie or Jesus in real life, 23 y.o., and a real SMAC freak.
How I happened to come here?
It all started a little bit more than a week ago…
*read in a strong, deep voice*
I went to a friend's place and we began a Civ5 hotseat after trying to start an Endless Space one and realizing it doesn't have that essential feature.
But I thought I would soon turn bored, and made a proposal: an alternation between two hotseat games. No need to say which game I choose, I guess?
Only a slight thing was disturbing my friend about SMAC: I had only an English version at my disposal.
So, I went to work and realized a full translation pack (the only one including tranlation of movies that I know).
This work took me such time I decided when it was done to share it all over the Internet, so I DuckDuckWent "alpha centauri forum" and started to post links to my pack here and there.
But there was something that happened here and didn't elsewhere: I've been warmly welcomed!
It turned me into lurking a bit over the forum, and I realized I was in a place I had never ever dreamed of: an ACTIVE Alpha Centauri community! Not a Civilization one with bits of SMAC here and there, but a truly, fully dedicated to SMAC community…
Now that I'm here I realize it is not the first time I come to alphacentauri2.info, but I think I only went before through the Downloads section and the Wiki, not even realizing there was a real active forum here.
I'm playing Alpha Centauri since something like 2001~2002, and it is with no doubt my all time favourite.
Not only the best 4X I've played, simply the BEST VIDEO GAME EVAR!!1!
I think I'm the kind of SMACer you don't see everyday: the GNU/Linux user one ;)
I started with SMAC on a Windows 98 or XP (can't remember exactly), with a French CD version, and soon bought the expansion pack for even more fun.
When I switched to Linux around 2008, I discovered that there has been a Linux native version published by the now defunct Loki publisher, and did everything I could to find a copy. When I understood there was no way I could buy it from anywhere, I resorted to *cough*find*cough* it by other means…
Geek as I am, I even turned it into a Debian package (now two packages, one for the English version and one for the French one).
Now here I am, and here I intend to stay!
It's quite cosy here, isn't it?
-
welcome to ac2, vv221! this place is yours too ;nod
-
Hey! I'm KingCrimson. I've been making use of the AC2 wiki for absolutely ages, but for some reason I only discovered the forum today.
So glad to see such a vibrant and helpful community still revolving around this amazing game. I'm a huge fan of the work Kyrub and Yitzi have put into improving it - between them they've addressed 90% of the things that sometimes dampen my enjoyment of the game.
Looking forward to being a part of the community here.
-
Your second post makes it unmistakable that you're one of us. ;b; Welcome.

Hi everyone i'm filippe999 real name Filippe(spoken like Phillip) and i found out about this forum while looking around for tips and tricks for the game and googling for mods.
What made me buy the GOG version of the game at last was the announcement of the Beyond Earth civ game, that looks a lot like alpha centauri would be, although i'm yet to finish my first game :P, i choose Zakharov because he looks a lot like Zaphod Beeblebrox from Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy series, read all books and loved the series, plus i'm a "techy" guy in most strategic games, but in alpha centauri, although i'm playing as the university i have single-handedly exterminated the human hive, the spartans and the morgan corp, now i'm going for the believers and thank god i got the hunter-seeker algorithm, BTW those cinematics just give a great feel to the game,(the one on the neural amplifiers was slightly disturbing).
What are good tactics to employ as the university? so far i have failed miserably to keep other leaders happy during diplomatic negotiations and the small pieces of text you have sometimes as the leaders is another thing that adds the immersion and makes the game much more awesome in general(i just had the one where the leader undergoes gene therapy for cell rejuvenation and dreams of the fungae lifeforms calling him in his dreams).
Loving the game so far and i hope to find someone to play online with here, this definitely a game setup worth burning and storing in physical medium as well as my personal game repositery :D
thanks filippe999
-
Hello and welcome, vv221, KingCrimson and Filippe!
@vv221,
Where might I find your debian packages for SMAC?
@Filippe
What difficulty are you playing at? Above Librarian the AI can be unreasonably aggressive. As for strategy for the University, other players will be able to help you out more. I just wing it every time. Yitzi seems fairly confident with strategy advice.
Talking of whom, you might want to consider using one of the patched binaries for the game. They fix loads of bugs and add a load of new features for modding. Kyrub's patch even makes the AI a lot smarter (which is something you want even as a new player, just play on a lower difficulty if you need to).
Kyrub's patch is for Alpha Centauri (terran.exe), Yitzi's is for Alien Crossfire (terranx.exe). There's a project in the works to port the original game to the new engine too, so that we can unify modding effort on one version.
-
Yitzi seems fairly confident with strategy advice.
Well, depends on the details. I'm not that experienced, so my advice is unlikely to be as good as someone with a lot of experience like Earthmichael...but if nobody has experience (e.g. the current GotM), my advice might be more useful.
As Zak, I would try to grab the Virtual World, and not be afraid to set some energy to psych to help with the drones.
-
I would like to see more conversation in Theory of Everything, BTW. We do well for serious heavy talk, but I would like to see more newb questions and casual "Which faction would YOU have joined"-type chatter topics. I've had a few SMACers tell me we seem too hardcore for their blood. :)
-
Hello and welcome, vv221, KingCrimson and Filippe!
@vv221,
Where might I find your debian packages for SMAC?
PM'd you about it ;)
(maybe twice, I'm a bit tired)
-
Received (twice). Thanks, vv221.

Hi,I'm Ultimatum,I found you guys after searching for this game(which I brought from Gog.com)
Anyway,I'm a Believer player and today I achieved my first transcendence victory!(Took me awhile though!)

Cool name, Man! 8)

Thanks :D

What's the... ah... ultimatum? ;santi;

Give me your technology or else!

Give me your technology or else!
Best way to play ;miriam;. (Which is why I think MP games need a rule of no hard feelings out-of-game over what happens in-game.)

Perhaps in such cases its best to shed honor, and bear pride. :P

You got it backwards. It should be shed pride, and bear honor ::). What a silly mistake :P.

I know the saying goes the other way around. Think about it. ;cute

Hi,
i am an organic low voltage bot from germany. I finally decided to register and post here, after i thought about it on many occasions.
I am not an english speaking genius, so i hope you apologize if i should accidentally write something about your mother and dead fishes.
I was lurking around sporadically quiet a long time, maybe my search after editing the sound files lead me to these board, i can't remember exactly. My attention rised dramatically after i discovered JarlWolfs AAR, which i discovered accidentally while searching for Red Army Marches on youtube. Or maybe i searched for red army marches after founding his AAR? I've already forgotten this either.
I am playing SMAC/SMAX since roundabout 2001 or 2002. With some longer breaks i played it almost every week a few hours since then. I like the fact that the game makes you think about things. Politics, technologies, future, astrophysic and so on. There is nothing better than listening to the voyager recordings, crunching some scientific projects (via BOINC) and playing SMAX.
I think it's the truth when i say, that nearly everything of my actual interests was at least a little bit inspired by SMAC/X. I'm not ashamed about that.
I would have registered earlier, but i just didn't want to start here while being within the first rage about some.. well, politics. Doesn't really matter.
But today I realized that i have to register anyway, because there is something very important that i have to do:
I want to express my deep appreciation to Buncle for running this community, and to all modders - especially JarlWolf - for enriching my game experience so much. I think what you are doing here is very important, not only for the registered people, but for the lurkers too, and every high-polished new game (I've even forgotten the title) will meet some difficulties to compare that what SMAX is today:
A combination of a very brilliant game, the imagination of it's players, and the extra content generated by this community.
Thank you very much.
Edit:
Wanted to add, that i'm a LINUX SMACer too, actually running the windows version on a KVM-QEMU VM.
-
I am honoured that my humble work has directly impacted you so much- and I am trying to still work on my AAR and other things, but life for me at the moment is both busy and I am fairly old. I am not as vigorous as I used to be, and my health is not as vibrant as it could be. I don't suspect that I am completely going but my energy output is fairly bad these days.
If you have question though or any thing to discuss, private messages work. I do have the Skype- but I rarely go on it these days as I lack the energy for it.
-
(note: I wasn't sure where to post this, hopefully this is more or less correct and it'll get read)
First off: Hey Hi y'all ! I'm delighted to have found both this site and you folks :)
About me: I've been around almost since before there even were computers, and playing console, then PC, and finally MMORPG's since the 80's. Strategy/builder games have been a strong undercurrent through all of it (Dungeon Keeper was a delight 'till I finally couldn't make it work on my new rig) but while I knew of SMAC, somehow I never got it till just recently. And it's time to make up for lost time!
I'm a modder at heart, but my skill-set is pretty rudimentary as yet. Still, I'm a scientist-nerd by training and inclination (Anthropology/Archaeology and Botany/Plant Ecology) so I'd probably be decent at alpha testing and such.
I'm in the PNW of the US (Pacific time, -8 GMT) but am usually online at night since I'm nocturnal :)
Unfortunately, I've been having some issues with getting the game(s) to work, currently with the "Unable to allocate draw buffer'' error. I'm sure folks have solved it long ago, but the install/debugging solutions are rather scattered about and I haven't found a repository of all the info neatly presented, at least as yet.. [Edit: Apparently restarting the comp worked for others, and Presto! Worked for me too]
I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64 with DirectX 11 on a more than adequate machine, I have both the Sold Out and GoG versions of SMAC/SMACX both of which I think are now fully updated with the official patches. (I can't actually check that since the files don't have version data on them, and without the game running I can't do that check either)
When I first got the Sold Out disks, I was able to get SMAC (but not SMACX) running with the advice I found online, confirmed I really wanted to play them, and started having fun with cautious minor modding. Now, however, even with everything put back to an unmodded state, even that install gives the same error. I have the Sold Out and GoG versions installed in separate folders in a separate partition from the OS, with the SO one, I even have SMAC in a separate folder from SMACX (that's the one that used to work).
[Edit: with the games now running, I went for the latest unofficial patches on both games (GoG versions)
currently Kyrub's 444_p for SMAC and Yitzi's 2.5j for SMACX.]
Now for the fun parts!! But I can see there is a lot more to the games than I first expected (a very very good thing), so I'm going to take the learning curve step by step. Probably play some basic SMAC first, practice with the .txt files a bit, then move on to SMACX. If anyone has a better plan, lemme know :)
Vidsek the Sig-Impaired
-
Hi Vidsek!
I'd like to wish you a belated welcome to the forums!
Did you get SMAC working in the end? Your edit seems to suggest so.
If not, my recommendation would be to uninstall all copies of the game (error suggests game wasn't properly uninstalled last time), restart computer, install the gog version and test, then install kyrub and yitzi's patches (keeping backups if the fresh install worked) and test.
The game should work without kyrub and yitzi's patches, but do apply them unless they're causing you errors (fairly unlikely) as they make the AI smarter (adds to immersion) and fix a lot of daft bugs.
Do not install the Sold out version of the game (GOG version is much easier to work with). Do not install the official patches (the GOG version comes patched to final official version).
As for playing the game, I would recommend playing Alpha Centauri (not Alien Crossfire) for the first time at Librarian or lower difficulty (higher than that and the AI is annoyingly aggressive) with kyrub's patch. If you'd like an actually quite good tutorial, go to scenarios and choose 1-Build (or something like that) and work through them.
For modding, depending on what you would like to do, you may find that working in SMAX is easier (thanks to yitzi's various additional switches).
Happy gaming!
-
I had no idea what I was missing. One of the support guys at gog.com pointed me in this direction, so here I am. It's really great to see the SMAC community is still here. A HUGE thanks to the owners, operators, and contributors here!
-
Hello all, I'm back
Very sorry I suddenly showed up and suddenly disappeared. My life went a little nuts for a while or quite nuts actually, and still has't calmed down, but I'm back and can work on things. I am now in the process of transferring things over to a different new computer (long story) and will post the things when I can.
One thing, I know that I was invited to help with some stuff, and I Know that I disappeared on it. Again, apologies. Please let me know if there is still anything handing around that you would like me to work on.
THanks again
-
welcome back, pentalarc!
-
Hi folks, demon59 here.
Signed up a while back, but don't remember introducing myself. I enjoy most turn-based strategy games, but SMAC has always been a favorite. Bought the GOG version, recently to finally try out the Alien Crossfire expansion. Not a prolific poster, but I do check in pretty regularly (when I can afford 'net access). Happy to meet y'all.
-
:D
Hi! Happy to have you!
-
Hey, I'm Flux.
I found this forum after modifying and renaming the Pirates text file. (didn't know about faceedit back then... I guess I should be thankful)
Well, it kind of worked when I added it to the game but did nothing besides change the blurb and base name. So I wanted to go a little farther and make one with graphics, so I ended up finding this. I'll say that I figured out how pretty quickly, judging by the 2 factions I've already completed.

I think you're a bot.

Does not compute.

Then you should do the math. :D

Hello!!! I am a long-time SMAC/SMAX player (think it's been around 10 years now). Always played SP, but starting to get bored with it. Found this awesome community looking for multiplayer / pbem action. Glad to see there are still some diehard fans here.
Looking forward to getting in on some PBEM when I find the time, though I will probably get crushed by you tricky humans. ;zak;
Cheers!

Hi! If you'll supply the original image, I can improve that avatar...

Hmm?
What particular one? Smilie making?
Because it contributes to the forum in a way and is far more entertaining than making factions.

One only needs to look at your badges: AAR, fiction, custom factions..

Anyway, you're more talented than me at this.. :-[

For starters, "Je m'appelle" instead of "Mon nom est".
First introduction to "how things are not said" in French class. :P
-
However "Mon nom est..." is perfectly valid too.
For exemple at the beginning of my book and my DVD of Moby Dick: "Mon nom est Ismaël."
It smells of formalism and a little pedantry though.

...Google Translate is no help with either post ???...
Well, the "language" of Generic User's should be obvious, so you just need to find a specialized translator.
The language of mine is similar, but more compressed; again, a specialized translator would be needed (and the very end is in a slightly different language than the rest, since it's an instruction).

I'm Elok. BUncle said if I post here, he'll tell me where he put my father's ashes. Now he's telling me "Nessus." Not cool, BUncle. Not cool.
EDIT: Also I'm on Poly too, and the OT's kind of a drama-bomb right now.
-
It's a Larry Niven reference this time - do try to keep up. ;)
'poly OT is what it is - and can be a lot of fun if you have a thick skin and a less-sophisticated sense of humor. The DLs lately are really tediously unfunny, though, and definitely not taking the hints.
A.) Can I do anything for you for an avatar? There's a lot of good stuff in the User Gallery, or I'll do you a custom job if you like, or take care of bringing over your 'poly avatar. The way our SMF software arranges the buttons and such is an initial challenge to a long-time vBulletin user, but merely different, not really inferior.
B.) You might want to check the last month or so of BU's Foul Mood thread for the latest on Lori.
-Folks, Elok is One Of Us, even if he doesn't know it yet, so be extra super-cool to him.

Some guy, Buster's Uncle, kept spamming me the link and enticing me to join. Completely relentless and I regged to shut him up.
(Or I had found it mentioned elsewhere on the interwebtubes, visited briefly, saw nothing in particular to interest me, and after an indeterminate amount of time the previously mentioned relative of Buster reminded me that it existed and tried to pitch it. While not wholly persuasive, I figured I'd make a bit of a go at it. But all of that is tedious and boring, so I will assert that the initial scenario is the true one.)

What is with you 'polytubbies ratting me out for my inhuman harassment today?

Hi. I'm Ben. I'm bad a video games but enjoy them anyways. I had this game when I was in high school and played it a lot then and some in college. I recently discovered GOG games and got the game from there. I also got the Alien Crossfire expansion (it came together) and have experimented some with that. I have yet to play an expansion faction but I've played against them (got my tail kicked by Domai in the middle game because I was arrogant) and I love the additions. I could consistently beat the game on specialist but struggled on talent (sometimes but not usually winning).
My desires are conflicting. I play the game as a simulation as I enjoy thinking about the society that I'm creating. I dislike tactics or strategies that wouldn't make sense for an actual society to do (changing Morgan to green for example) but I also like winning. I also am sure that I have a lot of room for improvement even considering my self imposed limitation. Talent is more realistic (as far as the in game universe goes) but I don't win as much so I'm conflicted. I would probably play Talent more if the computer AI wasn't so aggressive.
I found this site while looking for an Alpha Centauri wiki and I dislike wikia. I registered so that I could edit the wiki to make it better (I hope) but I was encouraged to introduce myself here. I think all of the information is there but it's bare bones and scattered. For example there is no single page for "Terraforming" bringing all of the actions together, describing automation modes and options, discussing synergies and strategies, and an overview. I might not actually make any changes but I wanted to ability to and for those who manage to wiki to be able to monitor my behavior and tell me to knock it off if I'm not actually improving it.
-
;b; ;b; ;b;
A.) I like your avatar.
B.) I always found the AC Wiki a little uncomfortable to navigate, so now I want to have your babies. Please take that as encouragement to do some indexing and organizing. We have a great wiki, but it's a work in progress that could be greater - that takes people bothering to work at it.
You're right that the story and personalities is the main thing that makes SMACX special, I think. ;nod
-
How do any of us know anyone else isn't a figment?
What search terms?
I honestly don't remember the terms any more. I think I was looking for SMAC strategies or something.
-
Oh BUncle, BUncle, BUncle.....couldn't you, of all people, have found an image of a Star Trek character singing? Futuristic microphone and all?
Vidsek, Avatar Police Intern
-
What? Spock singing Bitter Dregs? (Uhura singing anything seriously appeals, come to think of it - but I don't recall even Adam in Way To Eden using a mike.)
-I'm shaking it off, and I regret if you were exposed to a lot of eleven year-old girls last year. Worry not; I will not be a pretty blonde pop princess forever.
Why haven't I seen you posting in the Star Trek thread in Rec Commons?
-
Well.....I've watched most all the Trek series and movies, but I'm really more a Firefly/<insert long list of other cool SF shows here> sorta guy. And spent years in Star Wars Galaxies until the filthy beancounters at Sony pulled the plug on it.
I did read your post on why the pic of Ms. Swift, but perhaps.....a little graphics mod for some green or blue skin? How's that sound?
Vidsek
"BFG? No thanks, I'm good, I've got my Noisy Cricket."

How about everybody be cool until I've got th' Swifts outta my system.
"Glitch: BFG!"

P.S. ;shake

Hello all. I am indeed not a bot! (Yet... why must Cybernetics be so far up the tech tree? ;aki;)
I found the forum searching for SMAC mods, and this seems to be the home of the awesome Yitzi mod, which I'm having a ton of fun with :)
-
:D Welcome, kaminiwa.
There's about two thousand avatars in the User Gallery you can access from your account under Forum Profile, or you can post in the Avatars thread also stickied here and ask for something unique.
Yitzi won't be by until after dark on the east coast, but you can post fan letter praise in the stickied thread for the latest release in Chiron News Network, and bug reports and mod suggestions in Bug/Patch... He loves bug reports.
-

I'm actually working on it ATM. Probably won't wear, but you got me curious how good I could make it look...
-
Okay - you win, at least temporarily.
Tougher to do than you'd think - that's two hours work, at least.
-
Me thinks...she wears it well :D Time well wasted, cudos!

Found Axis Kast advertising stuff on cfc.
I don't even remember how I learned about Alpha Centauri. It was older than my being into civ, although I only got copies through GoG.
I've joined to partake of the SMAC II matrix game project. I remember having opinions on the faction designs I saw so far, when I browsed The Frontier. I'll ride a second look, see what happens.
-
It's been fun kicking around faction concepts with Axis, on the forum and on Skype.
-
Joining here to see if I can encourage a little more clarity in the patch documentation. I really appreciate the bug/exploit fixes to SMACX but as a new patch user the information to make an informed decision about which one to use is not readily apparent...
Not that anyone seems to care, but I found this website and the patches through Google searches for Alpha Centauri 2 a few years before Beyond Earth was announced!
It is great to see references to the patches in the GOG forum and wiki.
-

Ok, feel free to ask any questions you have.
-
Oh, we definitely care.
See, Yitzi? Not to demand a refund or anything for your painstaking and valuable work, but changelogs and packaging are somewhere we can do better. ;nod
-
I am curious how hard it would be to compile a complete change log for Yitzi's patch including Scients and Kryubs changes... (If one doesn't already exist) Yitzi was kind enough to modify his patch's wiki to detail that it now comes with PRACX and Googly Boogly's text work.
Thanks for caring... I think? Sarcasm is ever so difficult to detect in written text... :)
-
scient has a whole long changelog - that's all I know about...
-Also? It's not like we have a sarcasm smile or anything. ;sarc
-

Unfortunately, I don't think I kept track of every bug I fixed early on, so there may be stuff missing from that, and while going through all my changes to produce a changelog could be done, it would be a fairly lengthy process.
-
I don't know how many people read change logs. Personally, I find them interesting.
The useful reasons to produce a change log for a patch might be to:
1) Clarify the extent of the changes for new users
I have noticed in a couple of places a concern for using SMACX patches based on the idea that they are modifying the game play from the "Vanilla" experience. While a note of the purpose of the Patch would be good enough for some people, specifics would make it clearer for the more detailed oriented.
2) Notify current users of changes
You already seem to be keeping track of the more recent changes for current users.
3) Track progress
There doesn't seem to be an over arching target to the patches other than fix bugs and make the game behave as expected, so tracking progress is only to see where it has come from not to see how close it is to "finished".
4) Leave a nice trail for anyone who might pick up working on the patch in the future
All that to say. Unless you think it is worth it don't waste your time. I assume you work on the patch because you find it fun, so if making a comprehensive backlog of changes isn't fun then forget it! :)

PLATO Checking in! Who wants to teach a Civ addict SMAC?
Hmmm...addict...SMAC.... Never made that connection before. Should I be worried about never sleeping when I start this game? :)

PLATO Checking in! Who wants to teach a Civ addict SMAC?
I'd love to, but I'm recently being entitled newb of the month by BU :P , so I might not fulfill your requirements any more.

We definitely talk some SMAC here... You can ask questions in Theory of Everything.
This is on my to-do list to edit for brevity and do a lot of formatting, but it's a start... http://alphacentauri2.info/SMACX%20Beginners'%20Guide/Beginners'%20Getting-Started%20Strategy%20Guide%20for%20Sid%20Meier's%20Alpha%20Centauri-Alien%20Crossfire.html (http://alphacentauri2.info/SMACX%20Beginners'%20Guide/Beginners'%20Getting-Started%20Strategy%20Guide%20for%20Sid%20Meier's%20Alpha%20Centauri-Alien%20Crossfire.html)
-
An important thing to remember is that a game takes hours to play. 5 hours is a lightning fast Alpha Centauri game. If you're used to the pace of the more recent (than SMAC) civ games, then prepare for a longer game. I find the increased length providing a more rewarding win and a more devastating loss.
-
...I was remarking to Mylochka just yesterday -because I turned a (FPS?) Call of Duty theme into the SMAC theme- that this crowd likes RTS like Age of Empires a LOT, but prefers the more deliberate pace of TBS. AOE is a lot of fun, but we find them a bit stressful, and TBS unleashes the inner pedant's love of taking time with details...

Hello, I'm Lxndr (pronounced as though the vowels were in there aLeXaNDeR). I'm new!
I am a bot.
Or at least that's what those who reject the Cybernetic future society would tell you.
In fact, 'bot' is an offensive slur where I come from.
I loved SMAC when I was younger, and recently found it on Gog after failing to get it running on Windows 10 from my disks. After tooling around for a bit this past month, I decided to look up some things about the game, to fill in holes from my memory. I've since downloaded Yitzi's patch, which is pretty nifty.
I still play on Citizen mode and purposefully automate most of my units. My least favorite factions are Cult of Planet and the Lord's Believers.
-
Hi, Lxndr.
-
Ello folks, I'm a robot from planet Proletaria893c here to eat your babies and breathe fire.
Old man Jarl invited me here because he figured there was plenty of projects to exploit potential projects for me to help out with along the lines of spritework and voicework. I am a semi-professional voice actor, industrial labourer and general hick from the distant land of Canuckistan Canadia.
-
Hosers are allowed here - I understand y'all treat bots a lot better than the Yankees do...
I may have to invent a recruiter badge to give Jarl ;b; - we can never have too many people looking to grow the community.
-
I don't deserve such a badge, I am not on enough these day to earn such rewards.
-
Hi there. Been playing SMAC/X since they came out and have always been a big Sid Meier fan having bought nearly every game he's ever brought out. Was looking for new content and whilst searching I found this site which I must say is a very good source of material.

What's with all the Brits signing up yesterday? We had three, two of whom have posted.
Hi! Is your handle a reference to how old Rodger Moore looked when he made the film?
There's 14 themes/skins accessible from your profile (left sidebar>Look and Layout) and over 2,000 avatars in the User Gallery (left sidebar>Forum Profile) if you don't have something you want to upload. New members are encouraged to try some stuff, please.

Haha :). No nothing to do with 007. It's what people are called from my area in the UK

That's new one by me.

Haha yeah I suppose you could say that ;)

Hi, found this site through Google while looking for SMAC/SMAX patches.
I used to play a lot of SMAC/X many years ago when the games were first released, including a lot of PBEM over at Apolyton. Haven't played for years but trying a demo of Civ BE got me nostalgic! I had so much fun with these games and I had forgotten how immersive they are.
Is there anyone else around here who remembers Apolyton back in the day?
-
I joined the community about five minutes before the schism, so I don't know that I count. We do have a number of oldtimers, though. Check out Command Nexus for MP and several of them.
-
My co-owner sisko is bdanv, Mart and Kirov are currently running MP, and I don't know how far back the others go, except many of them were around before me, six years ago.
I thought I recognized your handle when you signed up, but I wasn't sure that wasn't because I'd just seen you browsing at CFC - but my memory has turned you up from that Peacekeepers succession game at WPC, so I do sorta know you a little.
Hi! They'll be thrilled to see you in Command Nexus, and I suspect some replacement opportunities are about to come up -a few key MPlayers have gotten a little scarce recently, and we need to get some games moving again, 'cause all the others are getting frustrated.
There's a MPlayer profile thread stickied in there...
Oh - and there's a succession game in progress but a little stalled for the same reason so many games are ATM -if only an accomplished oldtimer would happen by and jump in- really; you can pretty much just grab the turn and go for it. Mart will be glad, I reckon.
-
I joined Apolyton in March of 2001, so they all had 2 years on me.
It was a thrill to be in on strategy and tactics discussions even that late.
Then there were the many fan-made factions; some very well done, some not so much.
-
Hi BUncle and gwillybj
BUncle, I wondered about you too but my memory is not as good as yours ... yeah, Peacekeepers were definitely my thing when I knew what I was doing, back in the day ...
PBEM. Oh gosh. I'll have to play a bit more, I'm so rusty*, but I did enjoy those PBEM games ... SMAC players are always such a fun bunch. I will wander over and take a look.
* I'm not kidding on the rust ... ran up a little Gaia game when I first got it installed and all was going reasonably well until suddenly my bases were growing unexpectedly at a rate of knots. I was baffled. Wot was going on? Had ... ahem ... completely forgotten about pop booming and rediscovered it accidentally.
Now *that's* rusty :doh

Hi there, Misotu! I don't believe we met at 'poly, however I've been there for quite a while, around the times of the first Demo game. Glad another vet decided to pop in. ;b;
Feel invited to the PBEM area, there's still a few of us left. Once we finish the Rising Sun game, we with Yabcok will surely look for another game. You may also remember bintravkin, who joined us some time back.
Don't worry about the rust, I know what you mean but all will come back to you soon. I'd like to have an HtH with you and we can think about some 4p game. What do you think?
I like the PKs, too. :) The only faction to truly embrace vertical growth.
-
OK Kirov, you talked me into it ;cute
I PMed you, going to be off-line (unusually) until around the end of the month but after that I have lots of free time :danc:

Hello, another fan to SMAC reporting ! :danc:
Ok, so... I´m not so newbie to this game as you may think. :D
I´ve had my little share of games played and won:
Transcendence Victory with the Gaians on Citizen difficulty in a standard sized random map planet
Economic Victory with the Morganites on Talent difficulty on the Earth map
(it was such an advantage to begin in India with its high terrain ;lol )
Conquest Victory with the Spartans and Cultists on Talent difficulty in a standard sized random map planet (Spartans)
and in a tiny sized random map planet (Cultists).
But I´m still a newbie for many more things like game and rule mechanics.
For example, how can I achieve a Diplomatic Victory ?
Do I only have to be nice to everyone ? Treaties of Friendship (and Brotherhood ?) with everyone ? Buy their votes ? Give gifts to the agressive factions until I can be their friend or at least buy their vote ?
And... some trivia info about me:
My favorite factions are Gaia´s Stepdaughters and Cult of Planet.
My favorite Victory is Conquest (with Mind Worm´s swarm it´s better ;cha; ).
I like tiny maps, I don´t get lost in the map, don´t have to monitor so many bases,
and it takes me little time to play and win.
I hate the Nautilus Pirates and the Human Hive, too many bases to take...
my Planet Busters spamming comes to mind. ;lol
-
Mindworm capture is definitely a powerful asset of the +Planet factions in the early game. I depended on that when I was playing the SMAC demo extensively pre-release; it was about the only way to win in only 100 turns, and then only if the Believers weren't too far away on the map.

Clever strategy. :o
Was it hard to do ?

Very. Took some luck and a lot of practice to pull off.

It would be cool to play a scenario with that challenge.
I found this site googling "Alpha centauri maps/scenarios".

Hello, I'm 16 years late on this epic journey, but as I have just retired myself from work, I am planning to make up for it.
So expect me to ask lots of beginners questions, as I have been fooling around on the easiest level for about a week now, but there are still far too many factors in the game to get my mind around it.
But I find the atmosphere great, reminds me of the great SF novels of the 1970's, of Niven and Pournelle etc.
And the graphics are acceptable for somebody who worked on mainframes in a former life :-)
-
Welcome Raaf!!
Lots of beginners here (after a year or two I'm very much one), and some awesome oldtimers and experts.
I've been treated very well, learned a bunch, and had fun. I think you can expect the same :)
Niven and Pournelle are among my favorites too. Also CJ Cherryh, Tanath Lee, and many others I forget the spelling of...
Escapist, yes, but they made me think in new ways and areas that changed me in ways I still think have been good.
For an old and superficially simple game, it has a surprising amount of complexity and depth. If you read through all the threads on just this forum you'll be....um, probably just as confused as I am...but with time it starts to make sense. Any point along the way it's fun to play, and often, the unexpected adds to that.
If you're using SMAX, I seriously advise installing Yitzi's latest patch and the PRACX addition by Plotinus as well. They improve the experience quite a lot.
There are still a lot of bugs and design flaws waiting to be dealt with, but we have some talented folks working on them, so the future of this opus looks good.
And again, welcome aboard :D
-
Bodhisattva. Came across this while discussing with someone who was unable to get SMAC running on el capitan. Long time fan of the game, of course. :)
-
Greetings and salutations, Chironites. I've enjoyed the GOG release of SMAC+SMAX for a few years...lessee, first encountered Alpha Centauri in early 2000s when a buddy referred to some of the quotes in a philosophy class - IIRC the teacher encouraged him to bring the game in but setting up a hotseat game took too much class time, heh. Good times.
The Jesus Incident is on my reading list since learning a bit about it on the wikipedia article for the game at least a year ago. I'm not sure if my current laptop is able to run Beyond Earth but mean to check that out at some point in the future too.
I believe I was looking up info on the scenario editor / custom scenarios when I found this forum yesterday...pretty sure I've consulted the wiki before :)
-
Yikes! 31 pages in this thread! (I only read pages 1 and 27-31.) This does seem to be a friendly forum.
...I was remarking to Mylochka just yesterday -because I turned a (FPS?) Call of Duty theme into the SMAC theme- that this crowd likes RTS like Age of Empires a LOT, but prefers the more deliberate pace of TBS. AOE is a lot of fun, but we find them a bit stressful, and TBS unleashes the inner pedant's love of taking time with details...
My problem is that when things get intense onscreen my coordination goes to heck. So a TBS is easier for me. :-[ I'm pretty casual about gaming, it isn't unusual for me to lose when playing against another human.
As you can see, I didn't put a lot of thought into my name last night when I joined. I usually put a little more thought into handles.
Found this forum via a "windows 10 alpha centauri" search on Duckduckgo. Sometimes I use Google if I'm doing really specific searches.
Learning that SMAC will work on a Win10 system was a plus.
My first computer was an Apple][+ which dates me. Even had a computer that ran on CP/M at one point. I may also qualify for the 'hick' label as our town had a population of 7,000 when I was young.
As far as when I started using SMAC, I'm forgetting whether I was using Win3.1 or Win95 when I bought the game. Since the original SMAC didn't have DRM, I could move it to each newer system without doing an actual install. (On older systems it was easier to just install it. Moving large chunks of data wasn't easy. Remember sneaker net?) Still have the original CD.
I don't mean to be insulting to programmers who have done excellent work, but I haven't paid much attention to patches and mods. I have borrowed a couple of crude alterations to the game files. One to prevent the building of floating cities and another to prevent building alien lifeforms. At one point I modified an antigravity transport to hold 16 units, but I later replaced the file with a clean backup of the original and didn't bother to repeat that alteration. I'm not confident that my changes haven't affected the stability of the game.
Enough writing! I need to catch up on what others are writing.
One last note: It isn't unusual for me to be offline for stretches of two weeks or more. Please be patient if you're waiting for a response from me.

I'm a bot!
> And how did you find us?
Googled for "smac multiplayer".
-
Hello.
I don't remember when I found this place but it was related to looking up mods and fixes to running smac/x on my new laptop.
Howdy y'all. :P
-
Hi!
I played a lot of SMAC/SMAX back in 199-2002. I later picked up a copy of the Planetary Pack through GOG, but didn't actually do anything with it. Then I recently noticed that I was rather bored, and fired it up, and got hooked again. So, I'm playing SMAX again, I've broken the back of the computer opposition and am in position to cruise to a Transcendence victory . . . and a bug triggered by a computer-versus-computer air attack/interception interaction crashes the game. I am very annoyed, and I search the Internet for patches. Which lead me here!
Now, some old ideas I had for a modpack are percolating, and I'm reading years of accumulated information to figure out exactly what I'm going to do . . .
-
Hellow !!!!!
I am new to the forum. Have been playing SMAC all my life. Just reinstalled. Is there anyone avialable for multiplayer?
I have never played multiplayer but have always wanted to. Thanks for the forum!!!!
-
Command Nexus is our MP forum. Ask around in there - and be patient/persistent.
-
I'm not a bot. I got Alpha Centauri years ago and played it (badly) on and off since. I got it on GOG a while back to get the expansion. I was playing recently and kept running into various bugs that were fixed on my old install by a 3rd party patch, I think one of scient's. I was googling patches and stumbled here to find out, holy cow, people are still patching this game! So I conclude it's very good, but has lots of bugs.
I have limited time to play but am trying to understand the mechanics better, and enjoying reading posts here.
-
im not a bot and i came here because there might be multiplayer according to gog
-
Hi funnykoala
I thought I'm going crazy when I found this site. But YES! there IS MP going on. I think you'll find the Command Nexus most useful :)
I like that username btw ;b;
-
Howdy people.
My first post here, still learning about the place. Lurkity lurk =)
PS regarding the question, I found this by googling, "civilization forums" ( or something like that!? ) was the keyword.
-
Cool!
-
Hi all. I came across BUncle's post on the Civ Fanantics Board which led here. I'm not much of a modder, and still play SMAC, but only occasionally. It still is one of my all time favorite games. It really still seems fresh after all these years.
Anyways, I hope to learn something here and have a little fun. Thanks!
-
:D The Binary Dawn link, or the couple posts in the Star Trek thread this week?

alpha centauri labs --> were the search terms for which google first brought me here (checked in browser history ;) ).. but I still don't now why there are labs and research and both are for tech..
-
Welcome to AC2 :)
If I recall correctly, labs is the term for the slider on the social engineering screen: you can assign your money to econ, labs and psych.
Is it used elsewhere too?
-
I think its just the the Biology Lab that confused me, in the table of buildable objects of a base it sais X turns \n research and PSI, all the other research/labs bonus buildings have written labs there. (but when opening the detailed description it sais +2 labs, so I should have just opened that, to clear things up :) )
So I assumed maybe one of the terms could be for a % increase and the other an increase by a fixed amount.
-
Guess I haven't played in too long :)
-
Supercollider and Theory of Everything probably helped to confuse me as well, one says doubles research the other says doubles labs.
Actually there might even be a minor difference between research and labs, if the following is true:
Supercollider doubles research output, which is post any efficiency penalties
ToE doubles raw lab output, which is pre-efficiency penalties
--> if you don't build both in the same base (which seems better to get multiple techs per turn), ToE should be the better one for the non-capital?
-
Hi everyone! Big SMAC fan, decided I wanted to install the game and play again. :)
-
Welcome to AC2 :)
If you're not using them already, I'd strongly encourage you to use the Yitzi patch if you're playing Crossfire or Kyrub's patch otherwise, they fix a lot of bugs and improve the AI a bit.
If you have problems with Yitzi's patch on Win10, you might need to disable PRACX, but if PRACX does work for you, it gives you some great advantages :)
-
...If you're the AJ I met at WPC, I think the soaring white bird avatar is in the user gallery...
-
Well, how did I find this place? Found my way to the wiki through a web search (duckduckgo, to be exact), which has been in my bookmarks for some time now, and I've consulted it regularly.
Just today I tried to register to edit a page, when, lo and behold, I was brought to the forum that shares a user database. I had no idea there was a sister site to the wiki :>
-
I guess we need to make that link a bit more obvious :) You're hardly the first one not to realise there's a forum!
Welcome to AC2!
-
Been years since I played Alpha Centauri regularly. I've been playing Beyond Earth and I was defending it, but it just can't compare to SMAC, in part thanks to the wonderful modding work that's been going on. I've had the graphic novel and the novel trilogy for years as well, but I couldn't find my copy of Vel's SMAX guide, so the PDF version was appreciated.
I found the forum by looking up how to get my CD copy to run in Windows 10, and found the forums from there.
-
Welcome!
I'll post a reply to you in the PRACX thread momentarily, too.
-
Hi, I'm new to PC gaming and have a gap in my PC gaming life since the days of Ultima III picking up at the current gen of consoles. Yes, you can pity me. I built my first gaming computer because I was looking to play modern games and tap into the mod community. Started with Fallout 3, Skyrim, the usual suspects but lately it's been the ultima series and old games. Then I remembered this old game I used to play called MULE, I think it was on the Commodore 64, loved that game of building on a planet, mining for resources, farming, basically the first planet building game that I remember. I missed the Civ franchise and I'm determined to make up for lost time, this is my mid life crisis!
Alpha Centauri really got my attention as the settling on a planet just sound way to cool, so I thought I would start there. I picked it up on GOG with the Crossfire expansion. Since there is so much history on this game and hard to know what is the current best way to mod it for today's 1st time player, I would appreciate your guidance. Am I correct to install Yitzi's latest patch and then PRACX on top of it? Or does Dio's include Yitzi's patches? Are there any other's I should consider? Are there any graphics mods available to modernize it to higher resolution?
Sorry if this is not the best place to ask and the newbie questions, but very excited to finally play this game.
Edit: ohh, I found you with a google search, you seemed to be the most active community for AC
Thanks
-
Oh, it totally is.
I understand you are indeed correct to install Yitzi's latest patch and then PRACX on top of it - and that Dio's does include Yitzi's. PRACX addresses/improves display, but I gather doing something about the actual game art -to use a modern, non-obsolete file format, for example- would require major .exe re-coding, and no one's mentioned any interest in taking on that mountain of work at all.
-
@mcshame,
The latest and greatest way to patch the game is to use this mod manager I'm working on. It preserves the original game files and lets you turn the patches on and off.
I'd appreciate feedback on it, too.
Link: http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=17869.0 (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=17869.0)
That thread is about the SMAC in SMAX project, but you'll see a combined patches mod attached to the first post. Grab that and install the mod manager, tell the manager where SMAC is, it'll make a backup, then just enable the combined patch. And if you like, you can check out the SMAC in SMAX project.
For graphics, the best we have at the moment is PRACX's mod, which, amongst other things, draws the game map at whatever resolution you want.
-
Sounds great, I'll give it a try this weekend when my wife doesn't have me gardening and...oh! Mothers Day...I'll figure something out.
Just a question, and I hope this doesn't start a war...isn't SMAX an improved version of SMAC? I thought I was suppose to play SMAX because it included SMAC and more. Read what you wrote in the other thread, it's as if these are 2 different games, is that the case? Should I actually start by playing SMAC and not SMAX?
-

Yes, SMAX is an improved version of SMAC. It's a good expansion, and I recommend just playing with that, not SMAC. I suspect people prefer the original game for thematic reasons, not for gameplay reasons. Sure, there's a few unbalanced secret projects, but if we're honest the whole game is rather unbalanced, making it seem a little petty to pick on SMAX in particular.
Personally, I'm guessing that some of the fondness for playing "plain SMAC" is nostalgia. It is very "intelligent alien-focused", which might not be a good thing if you prefer your science-fiction to be intelligent alien free, but they're well-presented intelligent aliens with an entirely different way of communicating and seeing the world. It's not like there wasn't already an intelligent alien in SMAC (the planet). Some dislike the new human factions, but personally I don't.
• The Cultists are a weak faction, but make perfect sense in the context of the game's lore and have an interesting playstyle. They're thematically different from the Gaians, even if they seem superficially similar.
• People compare the Data Angels to the University, but I don't see it. Zakharov has a stated desire for the "free flow of information", but you don't torture and experiment on willing subjects. To me he's weak to probes because the scale of his experiments means that information suppression is difficult. The Data Angels are more relevant today than they were when the game was released. Governments everywhere seem to want private access and control of your technology, control of what you read, or both.
• The Cybernetic Consciousness make a lot more sense if you see them as being transhumanists, not "the borg". The faction leader and flavour as presented are then what they become over the course of the game. This interpretation makes them seem more believable and relatable. They find "reproduction awkward" in the early game because they dislike reproduction--not necessarily sex--and begrudgingly oblige until they have the means to clone on a wide scale.
• Few factions treat their drones particularly well, making room for the Free Drones. Yang's utopia isn't at all a "working class" society, so it's nice to see some working class politics to balance against Morgan. You can argue that he treats his drones in-game like everybody else, but that can be seen as unintentionally clever commentary on the failures of communism.
• That leaves the Pirates. Probably the "silliest" faction to me, but it's not terribly difficult to imagine that the Unity has ample preparation for aquatic life, leaving charasmatic Svensgaard an opening to form a faction. ("We tried living on land last time guys, come on! It'll be cool. We can hoist pirate flags.") They're quite fun to play as or against.
The only real problem left in my opinion is a thematic one: all of the progenitor techs don't make sense if you're not playing with aliens. You can "head-canon" this as simply studying and analyzing remnants and of the Progenitors left on the planet and their Battle Ogres rather than getting to know them, but that doesn't explain some of the new quotes by or about them. They're overpowered and a good challenge, and have new unit/UI graphics.
Forgive the blocks of text, but hopefully that helps SMAX feel as "believable" as SMAC. It's important to know that it's not an all-or-nothing affair. Yitzi's patch lets you selectively disable some of the new expansion features, and there's always DrazharLn's smac_in_smax.
-
Lots of people dislike the alien races in SMAX, and slightly less dislike the other new factions.
The mod was made because a reasonable number of people want to play SMAC, and we wanted to give them the extra bug fixes and so on.
Yitzi's patch lets you select precisely which aspects of the expansion you want enabled, so you can play with the new human factions and the ability to free leaders but not the new techs and units.
The only real problem left in my opinion is a thematic one: all of the progenitor techs don't make sense if you're not playing with aliens. Solution: disable the new technologies and expansion features if you're not playing with them in, leaving in the new human factions. Or, just play with the aliens added. They're overpowered and a good challenge, and have new unit/UI graphics.
Yitzi's patch lets you select a lot of stuff in the expansion to enable or disable, but not which techs or facilities to enable. For that, you need to make other changes in alphax.txt. It's not particularly difficult if you have a diff program, but I've already done the work, so if you want the SMAC tech tree and facilities dependencies in SMAX, you might as well just use the smac_in_smax mod.

Hi all! I'm a newb here, and I found this site when I was trying to figure out how to make SMAC run in Windows 10.
(I'm using GOG's DRM-free edition btw)
At this point, I successfully ran it by setting "DisableOpeningMovie=1". But clicking the mouse to move units cause a crash...
Oh well, Full Keyboard mode then... now if only I can figure out how to move my units diagonally on a laptop keyboard...
-
I believe one of the patches -not kyrub's- in the right sidebar will help with that. -Someone more tech-minded will be along anytime to verify or set me straight, though.
-
pepoluan,
Are you trying to run SMAC or Alien Crossfire (SMAX)?
In either case, I recommend you go to this thread (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=8433.msg92806#msg92806) and try the mod manager out. It makes installing mods pretty easy.
If you want to play SMAC, I recommend installing yitzi+pracx and then either smac_in_smax to play the SMAC experience in SMAX, or installing kyrub's patch (bottom of the page) and playing SMAC with terran.exe
If you're still experiencing the broken mouse and movie behaviour, comment in the PRACX thread (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=14308.msg64328), and I'll help you sort it out, if I can.
-

Do you not have a numeric keypad on your laptop? If that's the case (as with my XP laptop, which is what I use for playing Civ), I plugged in an external numeric keypad. No more problems with making diagonal moves. :)
-
Hi!
I found out of this forum through Valka's frequent mentioning of it at CFC :D
-
Welcome! :)

:D
Folks, I know this feller a little, and he's cool. Heckuva writer, too.

Welcome :)

I came here in search of solutions to online multiplayer with a few friends, so far to no avail. :C
-
This is how to set up hotseat games or something?
You want to post in this thread
From installation to tcp/ip games; SMAC(X), Hamachi and you (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=1437.0) if you have technical questions it doesn't answer, and/or in this forum Command Nexus (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?board=3.0), to organize live IP games if you're looking for more players, or get in on the play-by-email/thread action always going on.
-
The hamachi guide is rather outdated. I suggest you try with game ranger first if you're playing over the internet.
-
[Adds updated guide to Draz' get-to-work list...]
-
Heh. Maybe I'll even get round to it.

Hi! I vaguely remember having an account here before, but that was around 5 years ago. It might have been a different forum though, I don't really remember anymore.
Anyway, nice to meet you!
-
Hello!
I found this site while searching for mods related to SMAC. I do this from time to time while hoping there is a remake somewhere in the works. I'm a huge fan and I so disappointed there wasn't a sequel or a remake. That and the fact I didn't manage to get my hands of the novels, I bet those were interesting to read.
Anyways, what attracted me to this site was the Alpha Centauri 2 thing. Is somebody working on something like that or is it just for marketing reasons?
-
Hmm. The name was sisko's doing before my time - he never related his thinking about that.
The source code database that scient is planning to release in a few days is a big step towards someone being able to work on a sequel. We certainly have to coding and graphic expertise around for that...
Welcome to both of you, BTW. ;b;
-
Hello Everyone,
I am new here but been playing AC since I was in about 3rd grade (autistic as hell). I love Civ/City builder games but AC has always been my favorite. I am also interested in Faction building. I found you guys through just googling how to use the faction editor independent of the exe.
;nuke; ;worship ;nuke; ;hippy ;liftoff
-
I found the website while searching for some modifications of the game. I remain a fan of the game.
-
Hi all !
My name's Luxion. I'm 23.I just graduated from university. I like movies, music and play games online. Nice to meet you!
-
Welcome to AC2 :)

Yay for not a bot!
...unless you're cyborg or something, in which case, yay for a thinking and conversant semi-bot.
Found this place a year or two back looking for custom factions since I had JUST Started tinkering with the faction editor;already been rather helpful in getting the coding right. That reminds me, got another question to post on the modding board.
-
Facedit is the devil.
-
Facedit is the devil.
...YYyeeaahh, I'm getting that. :-\
Do you know if anyone has torn apart the faction text pages to spell out what the format needs to be and what each bit of data means, changes, spells out or does?
Pretty rudimentary, I know, but I'm learning the hard way here. ???
-
I know that it's been done - and all the fellows good at the tech end are not so generous with the big knowledge, which is a source of considerable frustration to someone who's spent so much time on tutorials for the art and creative end of faction modding...
-I mean, I'd be fine with someone just jiggering AcEdit to work w/ W7 or later and include the Xfire stuff like the alien dialogue, but no luck on that so far...
-
...I didn't manage to get my hands of the novels, I bet those were interesting to read.
They are interesting.
You can still find them on eBay and Amazon, though they cost quite a bit now. The third volume is especially pricey. But since I had the first two from when they were new and the third one got damaged in a move and needed replacing, I was glad to find one in pretty good shape online... for about $40 CAD.
You might get lucky at second-hand bookstores, though.

Hi all you sea lurks and mindworms out there :)
I rediscovered SMAX recently and would like to test my skills against human players. I found this site by googling Alpha Centauri Multiplayer, so here I am.
I'm ready to Pbem or via IP, so as no one showed up for an IP session tonight Sunday evening, I'll continue my solo game as Keiko on Terra.map, kicking AI's asses^^ to be well trained for games against you
I you feel like having an IP session at any time, send e an email, or an SMS as short notice. My country prefix is +43, as it is +1 for the US (typically one would dial 001, thus 0043 I guess), and my operator's net is 699, thus my cellphone is +43 699 1234 2430
Cheers, and don't eat fungus and no yellow snow^^
Martin

The SMAC books pre-date popular ebook use, so they're not even available piratically.
@Keiko,
Best of luck finding suitable opponents :) There should be some people in the Command Nexus who might be interested.

Greetings, AC2 Forums! Glad to be aboard. My nom des jeux is terzaerian. I've been playing SMAC pretty much since it came out in 1999; its original disk is still banging around my apartment somewhere. I've been getting into not only playing it but modding it as well lately, and a lot of times my Google searches pointed me here or to the site wiki, so I decided to pull the trigger and register. If you have Steam, you can add me on there - I use the same username there (http://steamcommunity.com/id/terzaerian/), though I won't be able to respond if I'm playing SMAC - curse you overlay!
I've been a modder pretty much as long as I've been a PC gamer, and my first forays into it were, appropriately enough, with Civ II. I've since made mods for a wide number of games and released them, though my most popular by far was Follower Commentary Overhaul for TES V: Skyrim. I've made at least one faction so far with custom graphics (though I cheated and used the Firaxian base art) but I'm working on another at the moment that's sort of Mad Max themed that I hope to make custom art for.

Greetings Earthlings, Centaurians, Chironites, Planeteers?!
I discovered this site through gog.com forum. Searching for multiplayer SMAC or SMAX games i found a post from 2012 linking here. I'm happy to learn that there is a community of smac players online.
I have only played multiplayer over LAN with my brother, never with other people over internet or email, but we are looking to hook up with other interested players for either.
This is my first post here and I hope to learn more about finding or creating a game! My bro and I are PST time zone and on mac gog version (I am not sure if version matters or not when connecting with others)
Looking forward to whatever may come of this, long live alpha centauri!
-
Jozasch - Welcome! Yup, there's still a few of us diehards hanging around here. B)
Glad to have ya with us. In PST here too, but dunna play online myself... limited and unreliable connection. :/

Hi,thanks.
Yes ,i had seen this website but what i was searching is the native version (nor the emulated with wine). Also i know they are some "problems" with the new versions of linux but they are already solved : they are a script which make it use the older linux libs without need to complex configuration or use a older version.

I came here following a link thrown up by a search for advice on playing Civ 6.
So, one of those sneaky Bots brought me here.

Hello,i have found more info of caviar tech.I post here the full magazines. It is great to read and also give us some interesting info. The most important:
The conversor is called "Caviator":
"The Caviator works as a plug-in for 3D Studio (R.4 or MAX) or as a standalone that accepts file formats such as Alias and Softimage"
-Caviar (.CVR) files can be made streamable
-Caviator will convert them to 3D pixels using an indexed 256 color palette (Adobe Photoshop .ACT format)
- CVR
file can also include animation data for segmented characters (those made of
linked body parts rather than a seamless skin). Animation data actually adds
very little to the file size: the 3D pixel chain for each body part is saved just
once, and a transform matrix is then created for each body part throughout
the movement routine.
**Each frame of animation adds only about 60 bytes to the .CVR file size**
Though the .CVR file can contain the full segmented model and animation data together, it also can consist of just voxelized geometry or just the transform matrix for movement. TecMagik has chosen to caviate its models piecemeal — one
body part or connected group of body parts at a time — then use Direct3D to
associate the pieces with motion-capture data

Yo, I'm Rex.
Been playing SMAC and SMAX for a few years now, wasn't that into playing games with mods back then but it's only natural to change your mind about it when you find out how awesome they are.
I found this place via google whilst wondering if there was any fan art I could use as my screen background.
-
Did you find any fan art you liked?
-
Yeah, the fanart is pretty cool. The only wallpapers though are of the different faction cities, hoping to find some more wallpapers.

Have you seen this?

Hello! I've been playing SMAC/X on and off for 17 years now I think. I even tried to write my own game in a similar vein once upon a time, but I was never able to solve certain problems. Lately I started writing narrative heavy After Action Reports for some reason, hadn't really done that before. I think it was a reaction to running out of things to do in the game. Also playing on 256x256 maps, something else I hadn't done before. Other recent dusty corners uncovered, things I've rarely done: drilling aquifiers on squares that don't have energy, nerve gassing alien cities, genetic atrocities.
I went looking for a SMAC/X specific forum because I was babbling on and on about this stuff on my venerable game design mailing list. Although I think the few subscribers have a passing level of interest, the volume of posts I was making, would warrant people more specifically versed in the details of the game. I think I found this forum by brute force web search ala "alpha centauri forum". Looking for forums that still have a pulse, or better yet, a volume of users. It's an old game so I guess I can't expect so much though. It's still the best Civ-style game, nobody has ever done better or even come close to equaling it IMO. I did try Pandora a couple years ago, but at least at the time, they didn't have narrative anything to speak of, and that's not the same.
The recent release of Civ VI triggered my latest round of SMAC/X. There seem to be all these tile gewgaws that modify adjacent stuff. Like they had discoverd or invented something especially new or kewl. I thought, "They did that in SMAC back in 1999!" Awful lotta stuff buried in the SMAC builder subgame. I often forget about echelon mirrors, although I'm pretty consistent with Condensers if I get The Weather Paradigm. I think those belong on "rolling, arid" land that has some "rolling, not rainy" land next to it. The mirrors, I've been putting on the "flat, rainy" bits because they don't make great squares themselves, they help other squares with a bonus. So I figure it is best to have a nearby "rolling, rainy" square with a solar collector get an additional energy bonus.
Truth is I can forget to do any of this stuff though. SMAC/X suffers from the "wait to win" problem.

Welcome! More than just a few of us have been playing SMAC/X from the beginning or very near. I got SMAC in February of 2000. I'm not sure when I got the Planetary Pack. It wasn't a long time after, though.
If you know how to change or add available map sizes, I find it interesting to play on 360x180.
It's easy to forget stuff during a game because there's so much going on. Even if you're plainly going to win, that complacency can make you make mistakes.

I didn't play it immediately on release. I discovered Civ II: Test of Time in 1999 I think. I got addicted. I had quit my job in order to be a self-described game developer during the dot.com boom, so I had a lot of time to blow on it. Later I discovered SMAC, and played that incessantly. I've had a love-hate relationship with it over the years. It's a rather flawed game, but still the best 4X TBS that has been made.
If you know how to change or add available map sizes, I find it interesting to play on 360x180.
Sweet Jes Miriam. Well let's see, 256x256=65,536. 360x180=64,800. I guess we're talking about comparable pain. Ok I'll give it a go. Maybe it will fit in the mini-window with less distortion.
Ha ha, have actually chosen 192x384. Just to take myself back to my retro Atari 800 8-bit roots! Those were memorized numbers back then, frequently occuring. It is exactly 9x a "Huge" map.
Have you noticed that you can't Quick Start one of these custom sizes? Even though I modded the game menu to give me a "Giant" map, a Quick Start will just throw it back to a Huge map.
It's easy to forget stuff during a game because there's so much going on. Even if you're plainly going to win, that complacency can make you make mistakes.
I never think of changing the Elvises to different specialist types. That's a micromanaging bridge too far for me. I mean crap by late game I might have 40 cities on a big map. Think I'm gonna worry about Engineers and crap like that?? Lucky if I'm not falling asleep just adding recycling tanks to new bases by then.
I never use Governors. Too incredibly stupid. I might do it if I was going to narrate / sandbox a game after awhile, not actually worry about winning it. But none of my narratives have quite made it to that late a game, so far. Run out of narrative steam before then.

Heyo folks - I've been playing SMAX since, uh, whenever GOG got it on their repertoire, so I guess a while now? I found this site poking around their forums' patch thread and here I am!

Hello Forum :D
Pretty sure I'm not a bot, although you never really know do you?
In any case, it's good to see a few familiar faces, and of course new ones!
Will definately be dropping in to the graphics subforum very soon, with stuff and questions about stuff...
See you all around,
Cuniculus, aka Larrin
Edit: No idea how I first found the site, probably internet search, or BU posting on WPC ages ago, or something, who knows? (sorry if that's not super-useful ;) )
-
Hello again, Larrin :)
-
HELLO... I'm not a BOT :) I found you by doing a Search online...
I have owned Alpha Centauri Planetary Pack (SMAX) since 2000.
I am looking for instructions on how to INSTALL the game from my Disk/CD onto my Windows 7 computer.
While it installs and I get the start up screen... soon as I click on something I get an error and the program shuts down.
-
See if these threads help...

@BleuSpecter:
It should install if you right-click "setup.exe" on the CD (not "autorun.exe") and select "Run as administrator". That usually works.
If that doesn't do it, right-click "setup.exe" again, click "Properties" then the "Compatibility" tab,and select "Compatibility mode". Select "Windows 98 / Windows ME", click "Apply" then "OK". Again, right-click "setup.exe" and select "Run as administrator". That usually works.
In either case, be sure to click "No" when it offers to install DirectX 7 if you already have it or a newer version.
You will need to install the "SMACx_Win2000&XP_Compatibility_Update_v1.03f ("XP patch")" (found here (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=13) at alphacentauri2).
Then there is Yitzi's unofficial patch (now version 3.5d) that fixes a dumptruck-load of bugs and adds many new options. That's here, too.
You will need the 3.5 patch (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=346) for the changed text files and the 3.5d patch (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=352) for the newest "terranx.exe".
After you get it running, you might notice five "missing" sound files. BFG was nice enough to fix them and upload the new files here (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=128). It's just nice to have the game complete :).
-
Hi DrazharLn, long time! :D (seems I already exist here, so may as well be me!)
Hi and welcome BleuSpecter, hope you got your installation issues resolved!
-
Hi people from the SMAC/X 2 Universe,
Glad to find this forum, another AC lover here hoping to see the game running on a cellphone soemtime in the future.
See you around!
-
Hellos.
SMAC(X) is definitely one of the best games ever made, so it's a shame I never bothered to play it until just the other day. It's up there with fallout 1, diablo 2, and xcom (the original). Amazing stuff. They don't make them like they used to, but some new games come close to that magic after many years of patches and expansions. Some indie titles are pretty wonderfull, too. But I find myself always going back to titles from 1990s and early 2000's. They're just so damn good... probably because they couldn't rely on graphics alone.
Some google searches led me here, mainly because of a small bug I found in pracx.
I'm a coder, but I don't really have a lot of time to spend anymore on any side projects. Always working. Hoping to not be homeless one day. And when I'm not working, right now, I'd rather play SMAC(X). I envy you modders that have the spare time to decompile executables to the extent of having something sizable you can release to the community, like PlotinusRedux's pracx and the Yitzi's unnoficial patch. Makes me wish I didn't have to work for a living, but most things do.
-
Popping in to welcome pascuals and Daemonjax to the joy that is SMAC/X!
Never be afraid to ask or answer a question. We're a friendly folk. Once you get in the door, it's hard to get back out.
-
Hey - I´m not a bot - I think...
My wife bought me my first CP-Game when I bought my first own computer back in 1999 - it was SMAC.
I loved it! and played it probably more than what my wife had thougt... as soon as Crossfire came out, I got it too and usually only play that one. Of course I tried out some other games since then, but there has never been a game I liked more than SMAX, so after a certain time I always love to come back to this one.
-
Welcome, SMACfirst!
I see you posted a question about Yitzi's v3.5d Patch. I don't know the whole answer, so I'll leave it for someone who does.
You've found the right place to find support, post your after-action reports, find multi-player opponents, and so much more.
-
I found this site because a while back, I was looking for the Alpha Centauri wiki and...this happened to be it.
Although I had played Alpha Centauri/Alien Crossfire a fair amount when I was growing up, I had never really gotten particularly good at it (I'd rarely played above Specialist difficulty level), so when I finally picked up a copy off of Good Old Games, I decided to look around for tips, strategies, etc. (e.g., Vel's guide).
-
I am like a bot but not. :)
I am here and found this thru WPC.
-
bot i'm not ! hi :)
after playing some Civ games i got bored .... all are the same ; so i've tried a mod Dune Wars for civ 4 (i liked the books) but in the end is kinda the same + a little nostalgia ; searching for other mods i found this good old game Alpha Centauri ... it's better that Sids new games , full of mystery .... now i understand what's missing from the new ones ... and of course i'm trying to improve the experience with new mods, and that lead me here :D
-
Hey I just signed up today. I found this website today while looking for some good mods for the game. Really im looking for some texture updates and if anybody knows how I can turn off the turn limit. I have always wanted to conquer the whole planet but never can because i run out of turns. Thanks alot guys and I cant wait to dig deeper into the forums and discover the treasures.
-
Texture updates? Like new landscape graphics?
I've done a few - I really ought to dig them up and zip up a goodie package...
-
Sounds awsome i look forward to trying them out. Any chance they might be a higher resolution. And any chance you might know of a way to extend the number of turns?
-
Alpha Centauri is definately one of my favourite games. I had such high hopes for beyond earth but it ended up disappointing me.
-
These two GotMs have altered fungus:
http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=8646.msg48351#msg48351 (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=8646.msg48351#msg48351)
http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=1478.0 (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=1478.0)
That's what I remember doing for sure.
Extending game turns is an easy Notepad edit of one of the .txt files, but I don't recall what. Someone will be along who knows soon, I expect...
-
Just edit alpha.txt (for SMAC) or alphax.txt (for SMAX).
Just search for "Normal ending year "
-
Awesome thank you very much. Cant wait to start up a new game with this.
-
How would I go about editing the textures myself if I wanted to change them. Any specific programs i might need?
-
Photoshop. GIMP. See http://alphacentauri2.info/My%20Custom%20Factions/Custom%20FactionsPage2.htm (http://alphacentauri2.info/My%20Custom%20Factions/Custom%20FactionsPage2.htm) and post questions in the Modding forum...
-
Do you have any tutorials on changing the ground textures?
-
Basically, it's all the same techniques as faction modding - just watch out for the color palette, which is slightly different for the terrain files, and practice, practice, practice.
-
Found this site on the GOG forums, came looking for Yitzi's patch. Starting a new game with it today :)
-
i was just searching on google on universe and i found this site. so i came here. i was just lucky.
-
Not a bot. Been a casual lurker over the years but signed up today to fill in in a pbem game.
-
I got linked here from GOG help forums.
I've been playing Alpha Centauri ever since it first came out; it's the ONLY software I have that I've put on every desktop I've used since whenever I bought it.
And when Windows 10 wouldn't let me install from the original disk, I was recommended to go to Good Old Games, and they got me up and running again. I also got Alien Crossfire as a bundle buy, and they were giving away Rebel Galaxy as a freebie, so I have those as well. Just haven't tried to run them yet.
-
Welcome x4 of ya! :)
The more I hear about Win10's problems the more determined I become to avoid it.
If it can't run SMAC, why bother installing it, right?
0:-)
Bogged by RL, sorry y'all. Hope to be back to modding shortly.
-
I'm not new, I'm still a bot and I found back through a stoopid email notification.
-
You find pictures of desirables women stoopid?
-
No, email notifications in general.
-
That I can agree with. ;)
-
I'm human except for three stents!
-
A young person like you?
-
Not so young- 67. Found the site while searching for info on SMAC. Downloaded games from Old-Games.com
Used to own Alpha Centauri, but never played it much. Getting re-interested, re-learning basics.
-
You've come to the right place, sir. We cherish our young, at AC2, but skew middle-aged - I'm 53, old enough that I just had to count to be sure I got that right. It's formal policy that we encourage fun, but expect maturity.
-
Hi. Cutlass here. Heard about the place from BUncle.
I've been an occasional AC player since about when it came out. Recently got Alien Crossfire from Good Old Games. Only played that a couple of time.
-
Welcome, and stuff.
Cutlass is know to me as cool and the kind of people we want here...
-
Thanks. I need to poke around a bit here and get a feel for the organization. I'll try to find something useful to post from time to time.
-
Yay for new folks. :D
Salvaging files from a computer meltdown... sorry for long silence... and I mean like LITERAL meltdown... after I got fed up with WinDURR's and its buggy-ness, I bashed it about for a while, then tossed it into a raging campfire. Now my art computer is suffering I/O failure, so trying to gather up the SMAC(x) factions I've been working on for way too long now.
OH!! Can anyone tell me how to get SMAC up and running on Linux? New compy with a O/S that WORKS is yummy! :D
...just no Alpha Centauri. ???
-
You've been missed, Mis. ;nod
-
I came through a link in BUncle's signature on another forum to the creative writing section.
I've never played SMAC, or read anything about it, so my participation here is likely to be contained to the OT area...
-
Gosh, I hope you'll participate there. (My foul mood thread has a noparse on to block search engines, and I could get one of the tech admins to do same to any other sensitive personal threads.)
Ladies and gentlemen, this here's another fellow known to me and very cool and One Of Us. Make him welcome, and egg him on participating.

:story: I'm not a bot, and I'm far from new, but I've been laid-up for quite a while with major spine problems. I did manage to pop in here a couple of times. The doctor did some work that helped about 9%. The procedure has a success rate around 60%, but I had to try something. I'm able to move around somewhat better, so I got back to my PC.
What happened next is almost unbelievable: The computer crashed  big time! I was able to run it just enough to check it with three different virus detectors, each of which found nothing in that vein. Before it decided to quit altogether, I got my documents and such onto a USB stick.
I tested the hard drive and it was fine mechanically. Its read/write was also excellent. I formatted it. I downloaded the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool on my older stepson's PC and used another USB stick for a bootable installer. The OS installed without a hitch. When I tried to activate it, though, I found out the Activation Code the guy used who rebuilt the thing was for OEMs, not individuals. ;clenchedteeth So, I bought a new Code for myself. My Win10 is 100% legal now.
I've been reinstalling almost everything I had. The utilities and applications went on first. I've installed the first game. Guess which one? :D I have to edit alphax.txt to what I had before – that file was lost, but I recovered a different file with the information in it.
All that comes down to this: I'm running at about 40% on a good day. My PC has been 100% since the reformat and reinstall – it's actually better than it ever was before the crash. I'll be back to my solo SMAX shortly, and I'll try to remember to check in here at least every other day.
Be well, everyone ;llap, and keep on SMACXin'! ;rockon

Hello!
-
The update is appreciated, gwill. Speak up more often about whatever, willya, so I'll suffer with worry when you're gone.
-
Hi! The 28th of March 2018 is Ulrik Svensgaard's official birthday, and no other (human) faction leader will be born for a while, so I thought this would be a good a time to join as any.
I'm ChocolateTeapot, have known about this site for a while, (Thanks for backing up the official site!), but my personality type is “lurker”, so…
What really draws me to Alpha Centauri is the worldbuilding, characters and atmosphere. I like immersing myself in the game, but I'm not interested in the details of competitive play.
I occasionally post Alpha Centauri stories on my fanfiction.net account (ChocolateTeapot again) and have an Alpha Centauri tumblr (light4chiron) on which I post even more rarely.
-
You did notice Planet Tales? You'd sure be welcome there...
-
I probably will post there at some point.
-
:D ;b;
-
Welcome to AC2. I probably won't see you around very much if you're actually here for the video game. I'm one of those losers who's never played. :)
-
We love those losers. ;nod
-
Hi Syn! Not having played the game makes you fit right in with most of my friends. We probably indeed won't interact much, largely because I'm a recluse, but who knows?
-
I'm a recluse as well. It's easy to pretend you're not on the internet though.
On the internet, nobody knows you're a dog.
-
Wait - my buncle powers are tingling.
-
On the recluse line: I live with three people, but none of them game with me – I am a solo player, anyway. On Facebook, two of the groups I'm a member of are named Solitaire Wargames (4,368 members) and Solo Board Gamers (13,192 members). Although I understand the logic of keeping up with the hobby, I've always been amused at the idea of solo players getting together.
-
[waves] Also a recluse reporting. I actually live here at AC2, but my meat body is in my RL Heimat, which I rarely set foot out of...
-
Fairly certain I'm not a bot, read too much philosophy in college to say I'm sure. Currently fiddling around with save-scumming as the ;morgan; -ites to see if I can get a diplomatic victory before mission year 2120. I enjoy "cheating" without triggering the cheated message in single player just to see what can theoretically be accomplished.
I think I found AC2 via Apolyton a while back, and lurked.
-
Hello
-
Fib, you've been with us for a year and a half, and posted eight times.
-Congrats; I think that's the AC2 record for latest newb-hello. ;lol
Let me know if you need anything. I'm not real stingy with the forum goodies like avatars and Custom User Titles...
-
I enjoy helping spruce up the wiki more than posting to the message board. :D The modding discussions and talk about the cvr format stuff fascinate me though. That and the occasional talk about custom units and improving the AI.
-
Sure. The Wiki's been missing you, BTW -last month there'd been no edits out beyond the 'previous' horizon- and we all pitch in to the community however best suits us...

I've been claiming to be the world expert at SP cheating/exploits in AC - check threads I started in Bug/Patch (most of the cheats are bugs) and see if you can school me or are impressed...
-
Hello all. I'm Jon and I have almost no spare time to actually play, so I tend to get my gaming fix through watching others and reading forums on my breaks at work. I'd love to post an AAR one day, but the odds of having the time for that are pretty low. Maybe I'll try to write one up in advance and then post periodically, if I ever get more time. With 3 kids under 4, that's probably not in the cards anytime real soon but who knows.
Anyway, it's great to see this site still chugging along (I've lurked on and off for years). I'll try to contribute where and when I can. My first in-game goal is to run a couple of games with Yitzi's patch and see how that affects the game for me.
-
Heh well if you want to live vicariously through AARs I've made a vast backlog of them over the past year or so.
-
Hi, im Mindflower. Im here to see if there are some great mods and factions for an ancient game that still has some qualities superior to the latest releases
I followed a link from the person above on Civfanatics
-
Cool, glad to see that tiny bit of advertizing go to good use. Welcome aboard!
-
I'm afraid I don't remember how I found this site, but I think it may have been through some of the other forum sites that focus on the Civilization series and its offshoots. I joined this site in April 2014, seeking assistance with modding the game and making use of one of the recent patches of the time. It didn't take long for me to just disappear.
In March 2015, my computer at the time had stopped working. After I bought a replacement, I found that it lacks a disk drive. At that point, I had decided to move on from SMAC/X.
As the years passed, both before and after 2015, I still thought of how I would mod the game, or make some of the mechanics in later 4X games similar to SMAC/X. The social engineering table and the terrain adjacency bonuses were considerable inspirations.
Fast forward to this year when I decided that moving on from this game was not the best idea. A week ago, I joined gog.com and bought a version of the Planetary Pack that doesn't require a disk. And I must say, it feels good to be back. And now I discovered an interesting late-game terraforming strategy: echelon mirrors in fungus.
The game still suffers horrific imbalances when unmodified, though, so I will want to start up my projects to restore balance to the game soon. This time, my ambitions have risen higher, and I now wonder: How can I go about learning how to properly edit the .exe file the way experts like Yitzi and Scient and Kryub have?
Here's to hoping I'll stick around longer this time. Thank you!
-
Personally, having just put 1.5 man months into the mother of all mods to try to solve various problems, I do not believe in starting with .exe patching. Be sure that someone didn't solve, or attempt to solve, the problems you're worried about simply with modding. My DESIGN notes and CHANGELOG are extensive and readily available in the Modding subforum.
-
This wouldn't be my first endeavor into modifying the game. In the past, I had altered the alpha and alphax text files pretty extensively to disable game-breaking items, keep present options in all areas worthwhile, and make sure a player (or the AI) couldn't stumble into something horrific like the effects of -3 Growth or -4 Efficiency.
If limited to the text files, I'll do my best to work around more hard-coded issues, much like I had done in the past. However, I would like to tackle them directly. I want to do things like make supply crawlers unable to cash themselves in to building secret projects, give increased support costs to more powerful units, and change the effects of facilities and society levels. (Maybe if the Economy rating affected gross income instead of whether you get +1 energy per square.)
-
I want to do things like make supply crawlers unable to cash themselves in to building secret projects,
I just made them so much later in the tech tree, that it's going to be a very long time before anyone gets any benefit out of them at all.
give increased support costs to more powerful units,
I just made Fusion, Quantum, and Singularity engines at the end of the tech tree. Powerful fission units are expensive. It's not an ongoing support penalty, but it's certainly a production penalty, and definitely slows down the number of units someone can have.
and change the effects of facilities
To what though? There are only so many things a facility could do, even in the abstact. I just put them earlier or later in the tech tree, depending on whether I thought they were underpowered or overpowered. Bear in mind that Future Societies are late midgame techs in my tree, not endgame techs. You're expected to play a lot of the game with 4 social engineering choices.
and society levels.
I've extensively reworked the Social Engineering choices over many iterations of design now. I'm fairly happy with the results at present, but I do not promise that they're perfected. Screenshots attached.
(Maybe if the Economy rating affected gross income instead of whether you get +1 energy per square.)
In a sense it already does. You have to be getting Commerce income though.
My biased opinion is, the only thing actually worth patching the .exe for, and introducing that level of incompatibility, maintenance, potential new bugs, and legacy support when you finally get tired of working on it, is if the AI improves. My experience is that Yitzi patch doesn't improve the AI at all. I haven't extensively tested other patches that made claims about AI performance. I think some of them might have only been targeted at SMAC, not SMACX, which IMO is unattractive.
I don't know if there are any easy ways to improve the AI by patching the .exe. The worst thing the AI does, is build way too many units and run out of support. Writing complicated AI to "play better" in general, is at least equivalently difficult to writing a new game from scratch. Myself, if I decide I have to scratch that itch in this 4X TBS genre, that's what I'll do. It's piles of work and I'll never make a dime working on a 20 year old .exe.
Probably, rather than derail this intro thread, it would be better to talk about these issues in the Modding forum if you feel any need to continue. You may not; you may be determined to do what you want to do for your own reasons. I've slung plenty of ASM code in my life, it's an expensive undertaking.
-
Hello, I'm Alexhandr, a fella from the Southeastern US. I've been playing AC off and on for many years, but never really, really got into it until as of late. I play multiplayer games with a friend of mine and we still struggle to beat the AI on Librarian difficulty. To this day I don't think we've ever reached the end of the tech tree. One of us gets whomped somehow, someway.
I found you guys via googling "alpha centauri guide." Happy to be aboard! :)
-
Cool beans. Guessing by your forum icon, any chance you'll be playing Sister Miriam of the Believers a lot?
-
Haha. No, actually. I'm trying to learn to play with Hive for momentum (I know, nihilism is the opposite of what my forum profile icon represents!), & Morganites for builder. I've read and been told Sister Miriam's Believers are a pretty non-beginner friendly faction to play, considering that you really have to be hyper aggressive and hope that someone starts near you so you can probe team them! I would love to get to know the Believers really well at some point, but I know I'm not advanced enough yet if I've yet to touch late game consistently.
-
I've never thought about the Believers as "not beginner friendly". That role would go to the Morganites, whose -1 SUPPORT completely cripples them.
-
Yeah, I uh, have found that out the hard way a number of times myself. It's fun playing as Morganites and rolling in energy, but boy, does it become extremely difficult when you're dealing with multiple AI at war with you. Maybe I'll get Believers a go next time I play. My friend insists on playing with the map of Planet, which means there's continents/islands. What happens if I'm Believers and I get stuck on a continent/island with no opponent to steal tech from? Rush for Flexibility, then Probe teams?
-
Perhaps it would be good to follow up in a differnet thread, say in the Theory of Everything forum. But briefly, if your isolated island is large, use your SUPPORT to make lots of Formers. The Believers are actually a pretty good Builder faction because they have so much SUPPORT. Best to complete The Weather Paradigm too. If you have that, you can make your large island even larger. Eventually the sheer size of your empire will make up for your deficiencies. Hey you might even find you're the Governor because you're so big.
If you get stuck on a small island, you're toast. No matter what faction. You make a beeline for Doctrine:Flexibility, but it will always put you behind other factions.
In my mod I have solved this by making D:F an E1 tech, no prereqs. It's actually pretty ridiculous, historically speaking, that anyone would be waiting to build ships. Waiting to build military ships maybe, but not ships. Water is the most basic way that humanity learned to move long distances, beyond their feet. Water access way predates road access. And this is the future, where people already know how to make ships.
So, nobody really gets behind in my mod, because everyone can get off of their crap start islands pretty quickly. Only way I could do better, is if I just gave everyone Transport capability from the get-go. I haven't seen evidence of actually needing to do that.
-
Interesting. Tyvm. What's the name of your mod?
-
SMACX AI Growth mod. Look in the Modding subforum.
-
I've read and been told Sister Miriam's Believers are a pretty non-beginner friendly faction to play, considering that you really have to be hyper aggressive and hope that someone starts near you so you can probe team them!
If you're that type of beginner that loves to crush everyone early at the game, then The Believers are a very perfect choice for you :D! The +25% attack bonus combined with the +2 SUPPORT means that one way or another, you'll end up covering the map with orange units without worrying too much about mineral support. the -2 RESEARCH/+1 PROBE means that you'll need to send your Probe teams Priests in the Clandestine acts Holy Pilgrimage of Tech Stealing The Acquisition of Holy Intellect from The University Faithless Heathens. Oh, and with that stolen tech, you'll end up creating better units than ;santi; thanks to the +25% and attack boost. However, if you're the peaceful type of Beginner, ;lal; is another definite option, as he's balanced in all regards in social engineering (-1 EFFICIENCY is solved by Democracy).
-
Hi I'm FartWitch!
I've been playing SMAC on and off since I was a kid and picked up crossfire a few years ago after hearing about it as an adult. Tend to play Stepdaughters, DataAngels and University. ;deidre; ;roze; ;zak;
Found this forum googling to win an argument (that this is the best computer game ever made) 8) Ragequit my MMO recently and been thinking about giving modding the game a go so figured I might as well join.
-
Cool! I'm curious what your pet peeves about the game are, that make you want to mod it. Unless you're less interested in rules changes and more interested in new factions or something like that.
-
No real pet peeves! I find the base concept of the game, a colony to settle a planet splitting into colonies based on ideology and thought paradigms interesting! Seems like a setting you could do a lot with story and theme-wise.
I've not done much modding stuff before so yeah I'll be boring and want to start with new factions and reskinning stuff! I'd like to build from there maybe expand/mess around with the tech tree next? See how far I get is the current plan, the dream (if I had the time!) would be to do a small xpac ;lol ;lol ;lol
-
Dewbacca here, Dewy for short. Completely human, Militant Hippy, husband, father of 2, long time lurker, just now getting around to making an account and saying hello.
Hello.
I would suppose I found you thru Google, but I've been playing SMAC/SMAX since "Ask Jeeves".
-
Good grief Ask Jeeves that was so cheesy! I did Alta Vista back in the day.
-
I have lurked for...about a year? And I was looking for mods for smac/smax and found this lovely gem of a place. Finally decided to announce myself after joining months ago and going straight back to lurking.
So...HI! :D
-
For a second there I thought that was Kirk smoking a cigar. Then I realized it must be a flask of that probably illegal Romulan stuff or something.
-
That's a telling moment about who Kirk is - it's The Enemy Within, the one where he was split into good and evil by the transporter. So, does evil Kirk set out to conquer the universe? Naw; he heads straight to sickbay to get his drank on with McCoy -which means regular Kirk is too much of a boyscout to keep any booze in his cabin- and then goes to try to break him off a piece of Yeoman Rand, which suggests he'd been wanting to, but, as established plenty of times, too professional to fish off the company pier...
-
Ah Kirk you old scallywag! My Mom hates him. I'm like, what's the big deal?
-
You have to understand. He's an icon for a certain demographic segment of the population. ;st
-
Well I refuse to see him as "just a woman humper". Even if he did do a lot of that. I was surprised to find out that my Mom is not a Trekkie. We always watched the re-runs together when I was growing up, why wasn't she one?? Well I guess it was just what was on before dinner or something. Maybe there's hope for her, she seems to like The Next Generation well enough. It's The Original Series which she doesn't seem too happy with. That show, did so much to be progressive back in its day. Seems unfair; maybe I should try to explain it to her sometime. Maybe the reality will remain that in her opinion, they didn't go far enough, something that really couldn't be done until TNG or Voyager.
-
I envy you having a living mother. Mine was very intelligent but never a scifi fan. She would have had opinions should she have watched any ;) And probably, yes, they didn't go far enough.
Frankly, Kirk wasn't and isn't a character I admire or would want to emulate, most of the time. I do agree that the original series was groundbreaking and (pause while I pet a very sweet ferret and erase his typing....) [K, furlet hung around my neck out of troublemaking range] significantly advanced gender and racial equality in the US. (and other countries? Suspect so, but need to check that).
I've watched pretty much all of the Star Trek series and movies, but for some reason, prefer the Star Wars stuff more. Dunno why. More fight scenes ? No. Less lame weapons than those dumb "phasers"? Yeh. It's probably something with the details. Both have interesting and more-or-less plausible overarching plots, and their characters and actors are adequate to good (in my personal, biased opinion).
-
I've gotten myself in trouble with Star Wars debates, so in this particular thread I'll beg off! Returning you to your regularly scheduled "I am not a bot" program.
-
Hey guys!
Saw busters welcome msg saying to post here so people know I'm a real person so here I am haha.
I've been a regular poster of at CivFanatics for years, also recently re-joined what's left of the Apolyton forums too (guess my old account on their old forum 15yrs ago wasn't transferred lol). I've recently been replaying all the old Civ and related games from my youth in HD to do a big tribute on my retro gamin website along with some fun videos too. Replaying SMAC is part of the plan as I loved it so much all those years ago. In preparation for my up and coming game I went hunting for fan patches and resolution fixes and found a big sticky GoG post about it all that had links to here. I had no idea there was a dedicated SMAC forum out there as I'm used to SMAC being relegated to a sub on all the civ forums so I was thrilled and naturally couldn't resist joining up. Got a few questions for the pros so I'll post a thread about at some point in the near future. :)
-
Welcome, new old-timer!!
I'm sure we all look forward to answering your questions and probing your expansive knowledge of all things Civ :D
-
Hi all, was directed here by a forum thread on GOG.com, looking forward to implement some bug fixes and lose my holiday time to SMAX!
-
Was linked this place through reddit. I’m a huge SMACX fan. Next year will be 20 years of AC
-
Yay for holiday players! :D
Adrian, Flippity, welcome. :)
...as to the ST-SW debate, personally like both, but lean a little more to the SW side just because the show takes tech to casually; they don't feel compelled to explain it (until Ep.1) and then IMMEDIATELY have a crisis that requires them to use their neat new shiny toy to solve said crisis. That they're in space is more of a given instead of an objective, if that makes sense. 5th Element did a great job playing with that concept, not bothering to explain it, it was just there and part of life. ;domai;
ST got better about it later on, focusing on story more than just being new and different, so hurrah for being progressive, even decades later. ;zak;
-
I've recently come back to SMAX (got the original CD version of the games) after some time. Never thought there would be mods for the game. Stumbled across this site when I was searching for how to get the game to run on a Win7 laptop.
-
I too am a human of the flesh and bone variety.
-
Just kidding, I'm a filthy furtrash Cybernetic consciousness turtle player.
I grew up on Alpha Centauri and didnt find out until a decade later there was an "expansion". Love this game and didnt know there were still communities out there for it!
-
Welcome cyborg furry turtle!
-
Vredstein here. I think I found out about this site through the GOG forum. I've had this game for quite some time now, several years in fact. I never got around to playing until I was forced to sell my over-powered PC and was left with a backup rig that only had integrated graphics. So I'm now going through my gaming library and sifting through the games that don't require much horsepower.
-
Welcome Downsizer! You've found the right game and best site. There are many more modern games that Smac(x) still puts to shame.
Hmmm...horsepower? Your backup rig predates the miniaturization to hamsterpower?
-
My backup rig is a cross-dresser. It will have an over-priced graphics cars in times of plenty and in more lean times, it will get stripped down to the Intel integrated graphics. You can chart my financial status by the status of the rig. I'm thinking that every modern gamer should be take a few months and wean themselves off of a graphics card in order to force them to play games like Fallout, AC and Planescape Torment.
-
Hello fellow humans, I'm totally not a bot.
But seriously I found you somewhere in Reddit.
I've been playing Alpha Centauri since forever, and also played the whole Civ series since its first game.
I'm also a game developer.
Thanks!
-
Welcome, GM! Even if, as a mere Player, I find your name both hope inspiring and scary ;lol.
Have you had a chance to peruse the forum sections The Theory of Everything and Modding yet? We have many threads there on game design both ancient and active. A couple groups of them currently quite active.
Another voice (with mind attached) would be quite interesting so jump right in if you wish.
Our resident site manager Bunkle is present and accounted for and extends his unkle-ly talents to the community. Chat him up, he will be a good guide to the site and it's history. He's also into game graphics and knows who's working with sight and sound.
Are you by chance the sub-species of human commonly called a 'code monkey'? If so, you might find extra interest here as decompiling the (undocumented) code, patching bugs, and enhancing AI behavior have past and current projects homed here and the work is far from complete.
-
I'm glad to be here. I found you guys from a Reddit thread. Possibly started from someone above me in this thread. I used to be active in the civfanatics forums but that was ages ago when the web was new. :)
-
We're glad to have you here.
A lot of folks find us by word-of-web, or searches.
Hmm, you must be as old as I if you remember the infant Web. Have you been playing SMAC(X) since the last century as well?
-
Ill take drop pods and Space Elevator for the win.
-
Hello everyone. I found this forum by accident on reddit. I figured why not take a look. I found SMAC back when I was a young teenager in the early 2000's. I think I have my original book and tech tree poster stashed somewhere. Anyways. Totally not a bot. Thanks for having me!
-
I am not a bot! Long time lurker actually, but I have some questions for the people in the Mod Forum which means I have to come out the woodwork and interact with humans (even if it means digitally). I may have jumped the gun and posted in the mods forum before posting here :-[
I am looking forward to being a part of the community!
p.s. I found the AC2 site from google searches. Looking up SMAC/SMACX mods and one thing lead to another!
-
Hey folks. I am not exactly new here- I had an old account under a different handle by the name of Comrade Crimson.
Decided to roll with a brand new account given I hardly use that moniker anymore and the fact that it's been so long- don't remember the login details and I think starting fresh is better. Been quite some time and people evolve and change, etc.
I'll probably be up to shenanigans with faction creation and possibly some content like I used to; my interest in this game has been revitalized upon learning that live multiplayer has been made more feasible.
-
Hi there!
Found this site through a google search while trying to customize a faction; I used to play SMAC a lot back in 2013, but fairly recently some friends convinced me to do a D20 Future campaign, which I mostly based off SMAC. Got me wanting to pick it up again!
-
Welcome! A fellow pen and paper enthusiast I see. There's lots of modding tools if you ever figure to pick that up again too.
-
Yes! I'm currently struggling with just getting a custom leader portrait up, so it may be slow going!
-
Hi all!
I found this site/forum many years ago. And again several days ago thru the conversation on forums.civfanatics.com
Today I registered again, because can't find/remember my old registration.
-
Hi, just registered to correct a typo I saw on the wiki to make things a little easier on whoever plays SMAC after me. I finished my first SMAC game here in 2019. I found this website through a google search trying to figure out the benefits of different terrain types.
-
Searching for the details of how perihelion works, I found a forum thread on it, so I registered.
-
Whassup guys and gals! Found this board when looking for unofficial patches to enhance my favorite game of all time. I got Yitzi and soon will try Thinker mod.
Cheers from Brazil! :D
-
Welcome all :)
-
Hi there!
I've been playing SMAC since like 2001 or so, and it's probably my favourite game of all times.
As for finding this place, I'm not too sure. Probably googling some kind of game mechanics question or some mod long time ago. I mean, is it even possible to take interest in SMAC and not to know about AC2?
So, being a long time lurker, I finally decided to pull the trigger (long enough to keep the worms at bay, I guess) and to join the community.
I'm partucularly interested in the renewed modding activity.
-
Greetings fellow humanoid lifeforms, I am absolutely not a robot exterminate all humans beep boop
-
G'day all.
I discovered the wonders of SMAC very recently, and was looking for some authoritative improvements after finishing my first game. It was pretty natural to find this forum as a result.
I mostly lurked, but eventually signed up so that I could post feedback on the Thinker mod. I consider it to be an excellent piece of work, turning the AI from a joke into a serious threat. Alas, nothing is perfect.
-
for some reason, i can't get Smac nor Smacx to work with gameranger or hamachi anymore.
im just trying to find help here.
-
;) newbie of SMAC.Have played CIV3&4&6 but prefer 4.
Here to find some basic guide and surprised that such an old game's special forum still keep alived pretty well.
-
Hello,
It had been many years i hadn't played SMAC/SMAX , having recently got the nostalgia urge of replaying this old masterpiece i also learned from google that there have been some unofficial patches floating around, so wanting to give it a try i finally found this place as i had no idea there was a SMAC/SMAX community site (most of my smax/smax and 4x following were mostly on civfanatics).
Looks like a nice place to play one more turn :)
-
Just found this site by googling. I've been playing SMAC since it came out, off and on. Always played the AI. Started wondering does anyone play online anymore? Found this site. I've never played MP so would be curious how to do it. PBEM would be my preferred method. Anyone interested in educating me I would appreciate it. Thanks.
-
What up gang. Been playing this game on and off for decades, but never to serious degree. Decided to go back to it and try a few patches/mods. :danc:
-
Hello I'm not a bot. I saw this place mentioned on Reddit and when Googling for old custom factions.
-
Long time lurker.
I think I found this site about 4 years ago when I had a hankering to play Alpha Centauri but had some trouble getting it to run on a modern system. The GOG version had some annoying resolution issues, so I did a google search about the issues and found out about the PracX mod.
I recently got the Alpha Centauri bug, and had read about Induktio's Thinker-Mod from his cross-post on the RealmsBeyond forums. I tried it out, enjoyed it, but realized that I can't give my feedback on it unless I actually made an account.
So here I am.

Hello! Not a bot, here. Known of this site for most of the 2010s and occasionally grabbed patches and mods off it when the mood takes me to play SMAC/X. Found a mod that's under active development and wanted to chip in My Take about it, and so made an account!
-
Greetings,
the game I played for the first time probably twenty-one years ago, but when I first got to this site I do not know. I remember Apolyton, however, and that at some point later I saw basesets made by Buster's Uncle when I searched for some. I guess reading about "Alpha Centauri 2" may have almost caused a minor heart attack, but even if so, it must have happened several years ago. Now, when I read about the installation process in the Wiki after looking for unofficial patches and that all those unofficial patches were surprisingly up to date, I took a closer look here again and signed up.

Hello - not a bot ^^!
I was looking at some old good games and found GOG AC2.. didn't play it for years.. so watched some youtube gameplays, saw someone mentioning improved AI mod and i eventually ended up here. Shame youtube does not have ac2 content, but guides and discussions here are quite good.
-
As for me, I assume I'm human. No one's ever told me otherwise.
I have played the game for a long time. A really long time.
-
Hello, i'm form Shawinigan, QC, Canada and been playing SMAC :danc: for so long that i can't remember when it all began.
-
Hello! I was searching for SMACX mods and ended up here. I wonder if anyone still plays MP.
-
G'day; hope I'm doing this right.
I haven't been on forums since the old days of Apolyton and CivFanatics.
SMAC/X is still my favourite game and one that I immerse myself in (reading all quotes, system messages, taking it slow) from time to time. I found you through watching a YouTube vid.
I live in Christchurch, Aotearoa, New Zealand and work in healthcare. ;zak;
-
Hey everyone - I'm a big civ guy, started with V and BE, but gave SMAC a try over the summer, and it's the best decision I ever made. I found the forum when I was looking for tutorials. I finally decided to patch the game, and it is a world of difference. Still playing on the lower difficulties, but looking to get better.
-
Hello, all. Been playing SMAC since I was in the single digits. Glad to find a functioning community! Came here to figure out how on earth to edit a .pcx file without breaking the background. Making progress!
-
Hello! First got excited for SMAC when I played the demo back off a PC Gamer CD before it came out. I've kept up with it through the years... bought the game, then the expansion, then the Linux version (RIP Loki), and eventually the GOG version when it became available. I had a little time off work so I worked on getting SMAC installed on my Chromebook, which is easy but not particularly simple in case you were wondering. Games that aren't being supported by their developers often have unofficial patches and community must-have mods, so I thought I'd poke around for some, and here we are. Playing the game motivated me to try to read all the real-world books quoted in the game, which I think I'm still not quite done with even decades later.
-
Hello! Played SMAC a little back in 2000/2001
This last year I've been researching the history of the Civilization series and this seems the only really active SMAC site. Great to see so many people active with such an old game!
-
All welcome aboard!
-
Hello!
A friend of mine recently sucked me back into Civ V multiplayer... which reintroduced that terrible/beautiful itch that can only be thoroughly scratched by some quality time with SMACX. I grew up in the 90's, so, ever since I can remember playing video games, SMACX has been at the top of my chart.
Reddit brought me here to check out bvanevery's SMACX AI Growth mod. I'm super pleased to find out that people are still playing and modding this game to this day!
Watch out for those mind worms, they'll getcha if your morale is low! ;hypnotoad
-
Yes they will ;mindworm ;nod

Hallo am Mhaelixai, am and old friend of SMAC who found SMACX on GOG and was amazed a year ago, since then have wanted to make AI a little smarter and got this crazy idea on my own to go into the txt files annd changed stuff....then did a google search on what not to touch when changing things and was excited to find that im not the only one in a decade+ that has had the idea ;lol looked at a couple search results and found AC2 which seems the best resource.
I live in Greenbrae, CA and play at work(lazy security guard) + when i have some freetime when my kiddos are down for naps.
Have become very interested in creating my own factions and polishing some details of the changes that i have made. Ideally I want an AI factions that can be difficult for me to play against on Thinker difficulty setting because transcend is too time consuming for my brain to keep interest on.

Hi, I'm an avid Civ player (started with 3, went on to 4 and 1; couldn't bring myself to play 5 because of all questionable changes it brought).
I've known about SMAC for a while but what really hooked up me is reading about its lore and mechanics in 4chan threads on /tg or /vr (like pic related). I wanted to learn more, started browsing various forums and wikis (the one that you host is my favourite; I think I found out about it on CivFanatics or just stumbled upon while googling). Only recently I got down to actually playing it.
Right now I'm in the middle of my first party (University on Librarian with default rules on a random map), exploring new
wonderful options like sinking an enemy coastal base or collecting interest on credits lol.
I know that AI underutilizes some important features but so far it's seems to be very decent. Seeing how by the time of the first council meeting Spartans had eliminated Gaians and were in the process of rolling over the Hive despite its powerhouse traits is quite neat. My own pact brother Morgan sending a gazillion probes to steal techs from me before I finished the HSA (I'm in deep -4 probe from my faction malus and knowledge civic) was the icing on the cake, although his initial expansion is admittedly luckluster.
It's really a shame AC didn't get a remake like Colonization. And it's not like Firaxis couldn't handle the gloomy, dystopian atmosphere - Afterworld scenario for Beyond the Sword was incredibly creepy. Seeing how charmless, uninspired, shallow Beyond Earth is pretty sad.

Hello everyone! I've played this game since my grandfather introduced it to me when I was 10, and it remains far and away my favorite of the 4X style games. Mostly I play vanilla SMAC singleplayer on Thinker difficulty as Morgan and sometimes Lal (builders ftw), but occasionally I enjoy some local multiplayer. I've been a lurker here for a while, so it's exciting to get started as a true member of the community. I found out about the forum when I was trying to improve at the game and as I began making custom factions. I wanted to learn info about the mechanics and came across the AC2 wiki (which is awesome).
I love the lore of this game just as much as its mechanics, especially the thought-provoking ideas incorporated artfully into the game's quotes and videos. I can't wait to explore the game with the people here! Oh, I'm also human.
-
Hi there, I'm a fresh Alpha Centauri player, I've never played this game before.......1999 that is :D
And yet, still coming back as it is one of my favorites of all times :)
Social Engineering...imagine a society where the Morganite philosophy meets Lal, all organized by The Hive, yes, you got it, that's where we are heading in real life 8)

Greetings!, we are not a bot, the borg? maybe, but not a bot lol.
anyway long time SMAC and SMACX player, back when the PC magazine maximum CD demo discs were a thing and I was playing on my uncle's Pentium 3 in windows 2000.
then about 12 years ago I became primarily a Linux user and discovered that the OS I fell in love with had a native port of one of my favorite games, spent years hunting it down, ended up with two copies, and I strive to play it in Linux natively ever since, along with my iMac G3 and my win XP PC, the versions for which were far easier to find than the Loki version of the planetary pack.
came across this community when looking for updated advice to get said version working under a 64bit linux with all features since it works fine under #! linux 32bit with a bit of audio compatibility.

I'm not a bot.
I started playing smacx again after finding it on the hard drive from my old Windows Vista laptop. I was going to buy the gog version but I just copied everything over from the drive and as if by magic it worked (on windows 10)
I have since put it on to a desk computer and my work laptop and it worked both times.
I was googling alpha centuri patches whilst eating a pot noodle and this site came up.
-
Good first post!

Hi, first post! I am not a bot. For a while I thought something was wrong with my email since I'm not any receiving activation email but it seems the forum administration manually approves new accounts.
I came across this site while browsing civfanatics.
-
Hi!
Played SMAC/X non-stop for about 10 years (I find a mod friendly game and stick with it) before moving on to Skyrim. I'm not back to SMAC/X and getting back into the swing of things. Love the Praxis mod!
-
Howdy all! I've been on this forum lurking at various times when it came up on google results. Most recently I've been binging a ton of conversations about Thinker AI in my attempt to beat its dastardly condeser-borehole action.
-
Welcome!
-
Hi, I found this forum while looking for mods to change Alpha Centauri graphics on Google, nothing special. I just want to shift some terrain hues to make it look like Earth. Is that useful? Maybe not. But what's the point of gaming on PC if I don't break my game with mods?
-
It's not a huge job, I think, though multitasking has undermined me trying in a timely fashion. Naw, reskinning matters and party on with your own bad self.
-
Hi! Originally found this site on google when I was looking for the SMAniaC mod a while ago, recently got back into playing it.
-
Hello! Name's Lionheart (old youtube name is Twingrey), found you by googling for graphic mods for SMACX; discovered that my IP is banned on this website, I believe erroneously. Decided to stop, use proxy and see what the website has to offer. Gonna be writing in the topic below concerning the IP ban, too.

Welcome to the site. Always happy to have a new friend (who is real human, not a spam-bot) joining in the fun here. :)

Thank you for your kind words! It feels like I am back in 2008 here ::) ; I love these little corners on the Internet where it feels like the time has stopped, there was always a certain magic to them.

Quite welcome. (no pu..erf.. who am I kidding? Pun totally intended)
With a game that was originally released in... 1999? 1998? ...bunch of old players still poking at it ages later, yeah, we're DEF in it for the love.
-
I actually first found this place back in 2017, but only lurked and never made an account until like a month ago for a question. Glad there isa a community online for this game.
I first found the main site just researching more about the game.

Suddenly struck by nostalgia, I wanted to play Civilization 2.
Found and played
Then I decided to play Alpha Centauri.
However, since the last game, I still have a problem - the game crashes on a certain move. I decided to look for communities and a solution to this problem. I found a section about Alpha Centauri on Reddit, and there I already found a link to this forum)
Love that it's a big and lively community.
We had a small forum in Russia, about 7-10 people, but he died a long time ago, and here the community is much larger, which is very pleasing.
By the way, on that forum, according to my idea, they made a microscenario for CrossFire, the essence is as follows:
1. Small map;
2. Yang and Zakharov are in alliance, 5 other factions are also in alliance and have a permanent vendetta against the player.
3. All factions have a bonus - the jungle.
4. You need to survive))) The game is a real hardcore, because from 40-50 moves a horde of enemies rushes from all sides, which you need to beat off somehow)
I can post it for reference)

I found the forums through a reddit post linking to apolyton, where I stumbled across a link to here; although I might've already visited this website years ago and forgotten.

I found this forum looking for an AI enhancement. I've been playing Alpha Centauri since 2002 when i was 8 years old, and I keep coming back to it. I've never found a community of people that share the same passion for the game, and I've never developed this kind of obsession for other games in the genre-- Alpha Centauri achieved something that hasn't really been achieved since. Nevertheless, I was looking for a mod that kept the original intact but presented a deeper challenge. Google search led me here via the Will-To-Power mod.
-
Hello everybody.
I am a casual player of Alpha Centauri. Great and addictive game that i found in the 00s and that i returned some times in times of leasure.
I was reading the forum from time to time for the last 5-6 years. I find it when I was searching for support, patches and mods for Alpha centauri. My search for custom factions and the latest ai improvement mods picked my interest in finally posting in the forum.
