the truth about global warming
« on: April 23, 2014, 06:44:37 PM »
Pedantic and abstract global warming talk, relying on computer simulations and whims of weather (climate), and not necessarily even effecting colder countries negatively, distracts from concrete concerns such as oil spills.

I'm going to abuse my owner powers on this thread if the customary right-wing political crankism ensues.  This is a very bad subject to test my good nature on.

Yeah; whether global warming is a real concern or not (I think it is), it's a bad move to lump it in with pollution-sort ecological issues.

It's a bad move to let political cranks on either side muddy the science.

This is one of those rare statements that is true pretty much regardless of context.

The people cannot understand science even if wasn't corrupt.  As for global warming, it would do wonders for siberia - just as solar power would do wonders for the U.S. economy.

Brazil was a desert during the last ice age.  I don't live there, but my understanding is that Brazil is actually a rather temperate country.  It it became warmer rather than colder, then perhaps they should count their blessings.

That's exactly right.  It's a bad idea to lump it in with more practical concerns which can actually be addressed.

Do we all agree, however, that pollution is bad and there's probably a connection?

Pollution is "bad", but the climate has been cooling for at least several years, the last one having been the worst.

I could walk all the way up to Ireland back in that age. Can't do that anymore due to the 'global warming' since then. And I'm pretty sure the Berber ancestors weren't happy to see their homelands turn into a sandbox. :P
Seriously, comparing geological ages?

Thank you for asking.  Geologically, we are due for an ice age.

There have been several miniature ones over the centuries, but there is a desire by governments and the like to overlook certain matters.

You're pushing buttons, and loving every second of it.

As far as my reading goes, Earth is not due for another ice age for at least several tens of thousands of years.

No.

That's only true for the long-scale ones.  Shorter ones come along more frequently.

No.

Liar. :P

Then you should have posted you meant mini-ice ages like the Maunder Minimum or more broadly put the Little Ice Age.

I am sure that there are many things that I should have done.

The entire character of a base and its inhabitants can be absorbed in a quick trip to the Rec Commons. The sweaty arenas of Fort Legion, the glittering gambling halls of Morgan Bank, the sunny lovers' trysts in Gaia's High Garden, or the somber reading rooms of U.N. Headquarters. Even the feeding bay at the Hive gives stark insight into the sleeping demons of Yang's communal utopia.
