Reminds me of the old Gulf No-Knox commercials from the 1960s, when they sponsored The Wonderful World of Disney.

I went on the San Diego Animal Park Cheetah safari once.
http://sdzsafaripark.org/safaritickets/cheetah_safari.html

It's amazing. Not just the top speed of the Cheetah, but the acceleration.  If I recall correctly, they said it went from sitting to 40 mph in three steps.  It was a now you see it, now you don't, did that just happen?, experience when viewed from the side.

The campanion dog keeps the normally nervous cheetah  calm around humans.

The dog ran first, then the Cheetah at  reduced speed, then the dog again ( which seemed comical at that point), then the Cheetah at about 60mph. The Cheetah gets overheated sprinting, so depending on the heat of the day, etc, the keepers  try not to over-exert it.

Actually, most animals overheat when they run. Only humans, canines, camelids, and equines are good at shedding heat and running distances.

Fish overheat? ;cute

And small surprise then all four of those species became domesticated.
So, cats overheat too? Outside season I mean? :D

Bloody heck, $50 to see that cheetah run??! ;eek

Yes.

Though they shed their heat to the water real quick and all, they CAN overheat if that water gets too close to the species' preferred body temp and thus can't cool them off as well.

Aquarium basics.  At least out here in the desert where it's easy for a tank or pond to overheat, most people actually have to heat their aquariums, but some of us have to pay attention to cooling them in the summer.

I was only speaking of animals in the mammal sense.  I don't have Uno's experience, but what little I've seen from ponds and fountains, fish are very sensitive to temperature.

:D . Yes. They are great in a pounce, sprint or quick fight.  Getting the heart rate up creates heat. So they rest. Tigers swim.  Lions rest over 20 hours/day. Maybe that's why cats in general like to hunt at night, or close to it.

Those other animals I mentioned tend to trot. A wolf follows the herd until he catches his dinner. A guy who was a runner told me he once followed a deer until he touched it's nose. The deer could easily out-sprint him, but it eventually  over heated and tired, he didn't.

Well, it's cheaper for me to go to California than it is to go to Africa, and I don't run the risk of malaria, or mambas. Besides, the cheetah run is a sure thing. I spent a lot more on a whale watch once, and only glimpsed a pair of porpoises before the weather turned bad, and all I saw the rest of the trip was the inside of the boat.

No refund policy or free next trip in the USA if the "advertized species" doesn't turn up? ;eek
Please don't tell me that was in Hawaii.

You need reading lessons.

He's saying it's cheaper to stay in the states and get a guaranteed view of specified animal than it is to go on safari in Africa and maybe see something.

I don't particularly agree with his assessment, mind you.  Dogs/wolves are not particularly great at shedding heat, they don't have any evolutionary advantage over cats in that way, they both only have the pads of their feet and their mouths for shedding heat.  A pack of wolves is not particularly different than a pride of lions in hunting.  You want to quote lion down time, put those wolves in the african heat and see what the down time is.  Hyena's share similar activity patterns to lions for a reason.  Group hunting is what it is.  You follow, tire the herd, pick off the weak.

The cheetah is an ambush predator, and can't really get compared to dogs.

I don't buy the runner's version of the deer encounter, either, frankly.  Fight or Flight...The deer in question would have eventually chosen fight...I call BS.

Now, humans and horses evolved a better ability to sweat, which makes us better at shedding heat, yes.  I can't speak too intelligently on camels.

Good point. There doesn't seem to be much of a difference in kind between the heat shedding abilities of canines and felines.. What if the biggest difference is scale? More mass, more heat . Cape hunting dogs do just fine hunting in the heat of the day.

Not really, since my response was for Rusty's whale excursion. But I could've made the effort to quote only that part. Not that easy with a tablet's virtual "keyboard" though.

They seem more build for walking long hauls. And of course have the ability to store a large amount of water. Maybe they can use that for cooling purposes.

If our society seems more nihilistic than that of previous eras, perhaps this is simply a sign of our maturity as a sentient species. As our collective consciousness expands beyond a crucial point, we are at last ready to accept life's fundamental truth: that life's only purpose is life itself.
