Any chance for a tool to switch between patches?
« on: September 10, 2013, 11:33:23 AM »
I mean something like Iniswap: you click an icon and you choose the .exe you want to use from a list. Execs are in separate folders along with respective text/pcx files, so you can also use it for modding.

I remember a tool called ModMan, but I'm not sure if it'd work right now and it didn't deal with execs, only txt.

Right now I have 3 copies of SMAC, 2 of them prone to crashes, and I need a fourth one for scenario building purposes in case I want to change any txt. And it would be great to choose between terran and terranx as well.

Is it a hard thing to do and can I ask someone to at least take a look at it? I'm sure I'm not the only one who would find it useful. :help:

Seconded.  As a modder, I have four copies of the game installed.

Last year, I wrote a dos batch file which moves out the current patch files and copies in the new ones. Took about 10 minutes to write. I can submit it if anyone's interested.

Droom, any chance for that tool or are you still at work? Man, that's exploitation. ;)

It'd be really nice to include faction swapping and alphax.txt swapping in such a tool

Yes, yes, we've all heard the philosophers babble about 'oneness' being 'beautiful' and 'holy'. But let me tell you that this kind of oneness certainly isn't pretty and if you're not careful it will scare the bejeezus out of you.
