Never, although I gave up trying to do so quite some time ago.

It's hardcoded in game to always set it to existing one.  It never reads in whatever you enter into field.  It may be because all other entries are considered strings while gender is boiled down to either 0 (female) or 1 (male).  Is this really useful for modding?  I can prob enable switching between male/female if it was really useful.

I wouldn't say it was a very useful feature, but it's certainly a broken one.

Ok, maybe you can post it to bug tracker wiki.  I would put it low priority since isn't that useful for modding but might be nice to have in future and like you said broken feature.  It's not something I can do instantly otherwise I would.  I'd have to do some analysis on parsing which is why I was asking if it was useful or not.

...As I told scient, it's really not important that a useless feature doesn't work.  -But it's still bothersome to have a broken feature right there in setup - I'd be as happy to see it gone from the menu as fixed, whatever's the least work...

If I recall, it worked in SMAC, until the last official patch (the one that added some Alien Crossfire features to the map)
