Sadly, in 2004 my mother in law passed away in our home on May 5th...

and the revelry ceased, never to begin again on that date.

We still like Mexican food and margaritas!
So tell me again, where are we going, and why are we in a handbasket?

My condolences.  But you could celebrate her life on the date.  I'm rather fond of the Dia Los Muertos attitude towards death myself.

She was schizophrenic and struggled greatly with it. Celebrating her life would be celebrating her suffering and causing the suffering of those who loved her most.

I think the Day of the Dead is a great tradition... but she liked me. I might not be the best judge of her overall character and certainly have no negative memories associated with her other than her sudden death in my home while supposedly recovering from a toe amputation.

Both my wife and my sister in law are very subdued on May 5th, easy to incite to anger and emotion. It has nothing to do with Mexican independence.
So tell me again, where are we going, and why are we in a handbasket?

Celebrate as in an excuse to have Mexican food, ya.  Beyond that, not really.  When I have students we tend to do something in school - this year was all at home so nothing really happened.

Superior training and superior weaponry have, when taken together, a geometric effect on overall military strength. Well-trained, well-equipped troops can stand up to many more times their lesser brethren than linear arithmetic would seem to indicate.
