Star Trek: Discovery Premiere Pushed to May 2017 to Preserve 'Quality' of Series
TVLine
By Michael Ausiello /   September 14 2016, 2:06 PM PDT

Citing the project’s huge production demands, CBS announced Wednesday that Bryan Fuller’s anticipated reboot — initially set to bow in January — will now debut in May, with the premiere airing on CBS network before moving exclusively to CBS All Access.

In a statement, exec producers Alex Kurtzman and Bryan Fuller said, “Bringing Star Trek back to television carries a responsibility and mission: to connect fans and newcomers alike to the series that has fed our imaginations since childhood. We aim to dream big and deliver, and that means making sure the demands of physical and post-production for a show that takes place entirely in space, and the need to meet an air date, don’t result in compromised quality. Before heading into production, we evaluated these realities with our partners at CBS and they agreed: Star Trek deserves the very best, and these extra few months will help us achieve a vision we can all be proud of.”

Adds David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios, “The series template and episodic scripts that Alex and Bryan have delivered are incredibly vivid and compelling. They are building a new, very ambitious Star Trek world for television, and everyone involved supports their vision for the best timing to bring to life what we all love on the page.”

To fill the Q1 void for CBS All Access, the launch of the Good Wife spinoff has been moved up from from Spring 2017  to February 2017.

Spent a non-trivial amount of time with a trek marathon over the break.  It was kinda random which series/order would be on next, but somehow mostly ended up with OS when I was sitting in front of the TV.  I had thoughts at the time but damned if I can remember them or muster the energy to log on at the wee AM hours I was watching.

Squire of Gothos  I don't follow the larger continuity debate, but if he is not a Q, they certainly based Q off of him.

Yeah, yeah, Q don't have kids, theoretically, or at least the first one was in Voyager.  But, then, time don't mean squat to Q, so this could be the child from the Voyager show.

The only problem with that is that Q sucks and it soils an episode of real Star Trek...

Q sucks

Ah, but the dude is almost EXACTLY Q in function.  That episode of OS really feels like a twilight zone episode, and is generally considered one of the better episodes thanks to the fantastic acting.  In fact, I would say it may have been based on or clearly inspired by It's a good life

Now, TNG dipped into the Q tank WAY too many times, admittedly, but the precedent was set for such a character here.

I've been watching a lot of DS9 of late, and its become arguably my favourite.

I liked the original to a point, although I find Kirk talks too much (which is due to the fact Shatner overwrote other people and took their lines during production as far as I am aware) and was too wordy for my liking, and the fight scenes are obviously comical what with all the wild swings, hammer blows and the way people shot weapons. But it was the pioneer of the series and it set a precedent of which can't be ignored.

The next generation a lot of people like and, while I do like Picard for him being a diplomat I found some of the storylines rather silly or too light hearted for my taste at points. And on the notion of Q... I kind of see Q as a Mary Sue to be honest. Sure he's not a normal mortal being and one that is a trickster, but, eh. I haven't really watched all of TNG to really see his character constantly to be quite honest but from what I've seen of him I don't much care for the character to be honest.

Voyager I've seen a few times. But I find the whole notion of being trapped behind enemy lines is, while something that would normally really interest me, Voyager plays the card of technology too much and the fact they evade the Borg so much really declaws them as an antagonist and makes them feel like they lack any sense of threat. And this in turn makes me lose any interest with Voyager, its premise while initially interesting wanes considerably as time goes on.

But DS9... for all its faults, I like it the most because it shows a Federation under stress that isn't so perfect. It ditches the whole idealism and confronts more political issues and feels a lot grittier and realistic without seeming to appear completely hopeless. Plus I like the cast of characters they got quite a bit, the relationships between each and the struggles they have makes it rather interesting. Odo and Quark are some of my top favourites and Sisko is a commander who definitely isn't afraid to get his hands dirty which is something I actually appreciate. Dunno, I like the sheer fact the characters have so much flaw in terms of them not being completely upright all the time, making mistakes or having issues but still being able to trudge through things and make it work. It seems a lot more relatable then someone who manages to find convenient diplomatic solutions to everything or rely on technology or some gimmick to escape almost every situation. DS9 seems to crunch down on consequences a lot harder.
