Been working on the head today.



Almost ready for the arms and legs, but there's some family business that prevents it from happening this weekend. 

Have 3 more Pleurant ready to be built, then we'll maybe do a side of the tomb tomorrow, depending on dry time.

It's becoming more and more a sculpt than a copy.  Modified the skull to make larger (and more 'Uno styled') eye sockets.  Slight addition of a brow, little wider, more square, etc.  It's no longer a Chinese female skull, that's for sure. (my source is a copy of a 21 year old Chinese girl)

I don't know about the open mouth; you're trying to soft-pedal the horror, yes?  Open mouth says screaming in torment...

That style transi head always had the mouth open?  So, I didn't even think about it.  Racked my brain how to best get it open a bit to be honest. 

Frankly I didn't read it as a scream, but I'm not the most normal perspective to judge of that kinda stuff.  I'm guessing the artists of the time had the same impression as me that a closed mouth skull looks like a big stupid grin, where a slight opening appears more natural.

..A lot will depend on what you do with the teeth - much of an opening does not say "at peace".

Well, it's open about a pencil-width so I can get a paintbrush down in there more than anything else.  It was either that or completely closed, and I'm opposed to the latter, in case you couldn't tell.

Was going to post the video, but it's over an hour long and has some less than family friendly content (mostly zombie breasts and VERY disgusting props done in ill taste).  It always surprises me how much CRAP comes out every year.  90% of it is total garbage or stuff you can build easier/cheaper at home.  Then there's the cool stuff:


Evil Architecture.  New company that sells little architecture onlays and whatnot specificly halloween themed.  Unfortunatly their website is not running yet, just the standard default template.  I'll be looking at them. 

All the usual suspects I buy from as well.  Sinister Visions, Wildfire, Froggy's, etc. 


Random things that I'll never afford but are cool to see:

The big thing is their MOTION.  Curvey motions are VERY hard to replicate.  I'd very much like to get a peek at the mechanism they're using to get those vines to coil up like that.  Would be good with a snake body as well.  But, much to Dark Raven Design's credit, they've STUCK to their decision to be THE source for plant/jungle stuff for at least 5 years now.  They've been doing vine creatures for years, usually in a wall to give the appearance of it twising, when it was simple curved arms on actuators...but this new free form curve stuff is remarkable.

Anyhow.  Time to take a break from the tomb. 

Might be on business travel this weekend, and I've been asked to do a special project.

And, one of the leaders asked me to make a skull to go along with a spooky story "To creep the kids out a little".  "And if it looks like it's been buried for a hundred years, all the better."  He wants to partially bury this for the kids to find. 

Alright.  This leader is a jovial guy, and does the "jump out and go boo" type thing on Halloween, dressing as a dummy and startling kids...but is mostly the classic family rated PG type 'scary' guy. 

How far should I really push this skull? 

To get something Kyle's not going to instantly recognize as mine is going to be hard to begin, so just dirtying up a skull isn't going to cut it.  He's made a few hundred himself.   

I'm seeing a purposely broken skull myself.  The exposed portion being normal, but when they dig it up, the other half busted and being held together by bits of flesh.
