At least I've been running my trusty old school backup "waste of time", and am not losing 5 months of work, unlike a lot of people tied to the system.

Nice variety in birdlife.
Not enough food here to support such big birds. ;no

Don't you have any storks in Belgium?

Mmm... during Spring/Summer I think we have a few nesting places. Not that many though. Its often a highlight on TV when a couple has been spotted.

Talia being very brave holding this dart moth for the camera.

Dont know why moths are instinctively "ew scary/gross" and butterflies are "oo pretty let me hold it".

Had pretty orange and black underwings, but wouldn't show them off for the camera.

Probably a matter of butterflies - brightly colored, frequent flower beds.

Moths- dull, nocturnal, dusty. People make subconscious associations.

Me, I like the big, rusty colored moths- Corcopias? About the size of a Luna.

A lot of my favorite lepidoptra are moths.  Not as many are nocturnal as people think.  And dusty?

Wouldn't be something local to me.  Eye spots or not?  Eyes would probably be a polyphemus.  Without, could be a dozen I know of, so probably hundreds of possibilities.

I'm sure you know a lot of moths. By dusty, I meant that when you touch some moths, you get a substance like flour on your fingers. Why is that?

This one looks brighter red than the ones I usually saw, but that's what I was thinking of.

But all of these silkworm moths are cool.

It's scales.  Butterflies have them too if you touch the wings you'll get them on you.

Running around so fast haven't had a chance to catch my breath the last few days.  Working in the hole at work, and trying to get the house/garden ready for us to be able to leave for Yellowstone at home, so behind due to crappy weather for all of May.  Have to plant pretty much the entire garden tonight.  Went from 60's and rain every day to 90's and dry.

Busy getting ready for Yellowstone.  We leave tomorrow.

Alec got home from scout camp on Saturday, had to pack myself and the boys for the trip by sunday (because when I scheduled my vacation last year, I was in the 'must work as much as possible we need money' mode and really should have taken today off to prep...oh well) which made a crapton of laundry to do, and the yard still isn't where I would have liked it before we left, but little I can do about that.  Weather has been real odd this year.  It'll be fine, just wish the pumpkins were more established going into water restrictions for June with me not here to use grey water.

Meanwhile, something lit some fire under my brother in law to get the in-laws house ready to sell asap after a month of let's wait a while, so had to move the stuff hEt wanted over the weekend as well so they can do an estate sale while we're gone.  All told, very little down time this weekend.

Don't know what kind of connection the cabin we're staying at will have (Free wifi doesn't mean good), so don't be shocked if I go totally absent for the next week.  Even if they do have a good wifi, there's a good chance the laptop will be working as a netflix box as they don't have TV and I'm not that used to using the phone yet.  Unless they've updated the various visitor centers in-park, there's little to no connection (or cell phone service) inside the park.

Uno, I'd like your input on the Real Life Barbie thread - I've concluded increasingly of late that a non-trivial portion of what's she's doing is provoking the uncanny valley reaction deliberately as a sort of trolling RL, or meta performance art.  It seems relevant to your interests, not least for the uncanny valley stuff and the strong attraction/revulsion reactions and how it all plays with/screws with our perception of reality.  Sort've a goth pink thing, too, I think.

I've seen claims that she used to troll Russian forums as a witch, too...

I haven't been hunting or camping this millennia, and probably never will again.

But being a recluse at heart, I like to be able to escape the grid in a park, and the people using the grid. No International crises, no sports scores or stock market reports. Nobody  making demands upon my time, or intruding into my thoughts, except for those I take with me. No cell towers ruining my view.

Granted, smart phones have a lot to offer in terms of weather & gps & emergency advice.
They will continue to encroach. And it makes me sad. :(

Well, have a nice time, just bring back a couple of pictures!

Why the hell not?

Don't think I'd go so far as to call Yellowstone camping.

At the least, if it's camping, it's the Disneyland of camping.  You certainly don't escape people there, anyway.  We had the choice of Flagstaff or Yellowstone this year, and I wanted to get all the kids to Yellowstone (we've been to Flagstaff, but there's plenty there we didn't see).  Kyle's at an age he might not be traveling with us much in the future, and wanted them all to see it at least once.

Debating how to respond to the inevitable "oh, I'll take your picture" from a kindly tourist that offers to use my camera.  The average joe isn't going to be able to even attempt to operate my camera.

I have often been asked: if we have traveled between the stars, why can we not launch the simplest of orbital probes? These fools fail to understand the difficulty of finding the appropriate materials on this Planet, of developing adequate power supplies, and creating the infrastructure necessary to support such an effort. In short, we have struggled under the limitations of a colonial society on a virgin planet. Until now.
