Slugs! I detest them. Lime the --- -------- at night, I say!   I suppose your PH isn't compatible with that approach.

Well, lime or something of the sort that can dehydrate them is probably the safest & most effective way.

But you have to see them first.
My grandfather once told me a story about his uncle Dave, who was basically a lazy genius. Dave did this sort of medicine show once to sell a batch of cochroach killer he had made from arsenic and cyanide ( or was it strychnine ?) ... whatever he could buy back in the 1920s. Dave offered a quarter each to boys in the crowd to go ketch him a couple of large cockroaches . When the roaches arrived Dave quickly dispatched them  with an eyedropper and a single drop of his special roach killer, which impressed the audience, and quickly sold out.

As my grandfather then explained- "you can kill cochroaches with a hammer, too, but the trick is getting them anywhere near it. "      Dave had a tendency to go away for long periods of time, so people could forget about him.

Getting the slugs out of the ground is the first issue.


Anyway, I think the best bait for slugs is beer.  No harm done to birds or skunks which eat beer marinated slugs. They also like wheat germ and corn meal, as I recall, but that's not so different than the mash used  to make beer.
If you don't want lime in your soil, maybe you could put down something smooth, such as a piece of moist plastic, and bait them onto that at night and then deal with them. For that matter, in a dry environment , some wet ground under a sheet of something might be a slug magnet, too.

You know I have a special place in my heart for medicine shows, right? 

anyway, the area is too large for beer traps to work, and that's a mess I'd rather not deal with, and I'm just getting the ground back in shape from the rampant liming previous owners were utilizing.   

Getting them OUT of the ground won't be a problem...  We're stripping the foliage tonight and disturbing the soil, going to water nice and heavy tomorrow evening, with the disturbance, coupled with a warm evening, they'll be out in force.  Then I'm going to broadcast something....

Seems there's 2 leading candidates.  The "Poison" route, and the "environmentally friendly" route. 

The former uses a couple pesticides I'm familiar with, one of which is a contact poison, and would be lethal to pretty much anything that eats the stuff.  It doesn't stay in the soil, however, and the ground will be safe for next year. 

The 'friendly' route on the other hand utilizes metallic salts, which break down and alter the soil PH. Supposedly the slugs eat this and then starve to death.  Fortunately for me, it turns the soil more acidic, which would not be a bad thing for my pumpkins or tomatoes.
