A scientist from Bristol University put the data of Middle Earth, the fictional world of JRR Tolkien, in a computer environment.
The results are available in Dwarfish, English, and Elvish...

The Hobbit was a good book.

LOTR was...not good...

Everything else is trash.

A lot of this is colored by the fact I was introduced to The Hobbit by an edition that pre-dates the whole ret-con crap about TEH RING. It wasn't this evil thing, and Gollum sure wasn't possessed by it.

The jarring changes to TEH RING and to the character of Gollum were really nonsensical when I tried to then read LOTR as a child.  First impressions and all, the world of lord of the rings I was reading WASN'T the same I loved in The Hobbit, and I never cared for it.

I found the Lord of the Rings turned too much into a black and white story, clear cut evil and good, with said evil side failing pointlessly when they should've been much more a threat.

The Hobbit is much more... down to Earth I'd say?

It's approaches it on a more realistic spectrum, more so then LOTR: The main characters, while the odd few are tough, and while Bilbo not a fighter himself, due to his resolve and cunning is a formidable adventurer and the book doesn't nullify the evils and challenges he and the dwarves face.

(And what I mean by nullify: refer to Isenguard in general in LOTR, especially at Helms Deep. I could rant pages about how easily the Uruk's and Orcs were defeated, and how they were defeated in general at that battle. And for a man like Tolkien, who had served in the Great War and did his own fair bit of research, is a bit inexcusable, fantasy or not.)

It even goes on the fact that the decisions of the party, the dwarves and Thorin in particular as well as the humans of Laketown and the nearby Elves are also capable of their own evils, and that greed can lead to the loss of friendships and life.

Something that in LOTR, while it was somewhat portrayed with the ring and from time to time, wasn't really too strong. LOTR felt too much a piece of subliminal reactionary motif with adventure tied in.

Though, LOTR isn't terrible for certain. Its an enjoyable read if you can disregard a few things, but me being old and cranky, its hard for me to these days.

I believe Planet will talk to us if we are willing to listen. These fungal stalks behave as multistate relays: taken together, the neural net connectivity must be staggering. Can a planet be said to have achieved sentience?
