Wow this is exacty what I was looking for,

Just for curiosity, do you know of anyone else who tried to do similarly but with an exe patch?
EDIT2: Ohh KYRUB'S SMAC 444_P exe patch seems to be that; but from your description, your results are miles higher than Kyrub's, would you agree?

EDIT: I extracted the ZIP overwritting the original files, started the game, and when starting a new game the name of the difficulty levels are still the original (instead of the said Drone, Engineer, Thinker, Transcend, Planet, Diety): is that intended? Or am I missing some step in mod installation?

NO i dont think you are missing anything. These files govern the behavior of factions, irrespective of difficulty level
