How big will Virtual Reality catch on?

I guess one of the demo pieces out is a haunted mansion VR experience, and it has Halloween folk abuzz wondering what it means for the industry.

I'm aware of a VR...Is Arcade the right word?  Arena?  Holodeck wannabe business.  In SLC, though I have no experience with how they operate.

I'm skeptical of it in general.  Though I'm more curious with VR, where I'm downright opposed to the 3D movie/TV nonsense that has carved out a niche market.

I don't see people wanting to get rid of the giant TV (that, can in some ways be a communal experience with everybody watching the same thing together) with a bunch of headsets and people all watching their own thing.

Course, I don't get the attraction of smart phones either other than they can store and play music along with text messaging and actually calling someone (which is the least used feature of the phone....)

That's where I'm stuck, too.  And my problem with 3D is in line with this.  I'm never JUST sitting and watching a movie (goggles or no), but usually just have the TV on while I'm doing other things.  VR wouldn't work in that way.  Even Gaming, I'm usually multitasking on other things.

But, there's undeniably some social element to online gaming, which is where VR could tap in and make that more personal.  And there's already companies vying to build a reactive suit for virtual sex...

I also use the map.  It's quite handy.  I also have (audio)books (though print is possible) and weather I use on there frequently.

I'm getting more comfortable with interwebbing from the phone when I'm stuck someplace, but it's cumbersome at best.

For me, at least, VR and 3D have a long way to go before they don't make me sick. I will totally be up on holodecks, but not until they're essentially indistinguishable from reality.

The sea is everything. It covers seven-tenths of the globe. Its breath is pure and healthy. It is an immense desert where a man is never alone, for he can feel life quivering all about him. The sea is only a receptacle for all the prodigious, supernatural things that exist inside it; it is only movement and love; it is the living infinite.
~Jules Verne ’20,000 Leagues Under The Sea’, Datalinks
