I don't know if it was because of excess use of Nerve Gas, but I saw something I have never seen before in SMAC, starting around turn 2180.  The Ecomdamage for all of my bases shot up to 30+, even though no base was havesting more than 6 mineral or so.  20+ new mind worms appeared EACH TURN afterward.  Rising sea level.  Volcano!  PLANET was reallly going NUTS!!!
I didn't play this scenario but I have already seen this happen in some of my solo games.

Yes: massive use of nerve gas without the UN Charter is just like calling DOOM upon you!  :o
Once you reach the threshold, just like you saw, massive can of worms  :D appear.
That could be a valid strategy to get massive amounts of cash without doing much: just keep 2 or 3 empath rovers in each base and destroying the first worm destroy the entire group before they can attack next turn.
What's more interesting is: if you have seabases, the isles of deep and locusts appearing DON'T wait until next turn to attack. Whatever your defenses, these bases can easily lose 10 or more population points and all their infrastructure in one turn! And if the majority of your bases are at sea... :'(

An interesting question would be to know whether native life only attack the trespasser of the Charter or all factions.

Well, unless you mod to make it count planet busters instead of major atrocities...

As we approached we were confronted by the ruined splendor of Sparta Command. The true immensity of the place became instantly apparent as our Quantum Tank crunched over the rubble and parked next to a shattered bunker, but the extent of the destruction took weeks to assess. The shielded datacore had sustained several massive breaches and smoke still billowed from the numerous cannon ports. There were few signs of human life.
