SMAC and Win 8

Hello everyone!

Back in the days, I was a huge fan of SMAC, but it got lost for a couple of years now. Thanks to my latest moving, I found the cd and wanted to play the old lady again. But I cant figure out, how to get it running on my new Win 8 machine. In the Wiki there is only an explanation for buying the game via gog, but I already own the game and am a little reluctant to pay again for no good reason.
Is there a way to play SMAC on my PC? I dont own SMAX (or, better said, I didnt find it )

You should be able to follow mostly the same instructions (install from cd rather than gog, then get unofficial patches and datalinks upgrade). Where do you run into problems doing this?

Also, for $5.99 it's well worth getting from gog even if you already have SMAC since the SMAX expansion adds quite a lot to the game in my opinion, and means you'll be playing a version compatible with the one most of the rest of us use.

The instructions say to simply install the game - that doesnt work, the game just wont start. It doesnt react at all.

I installed the kyrubs patch, and now it runs just fine. The patchnotes say something about AI-fixes, so I didnt think it could help, but it did! Thanks

kryub's includes scient's, which fixes a whole lot of bugs, including some issues running on modern machines.
