Fixed SMAX Sounds
« on: February 15, 2013, 03:56:52 AM »
I recently noticed that my Missile Launcher units were completely silent.  After some digging - prompted by gwilly - I discovered that five sound files won't work for players who have SMAX 2.0.  That's because those five files were encoded as stereo, and the soundx.dll file (at least, the 2.0 version) expects them all to be mono.

Replacing the existing files in the FX folder with the attached will fix the problem.  Yitzi and Kyrub, feel free to add this to your patches.

Can anyone confirm whether this bug exists in the GOG version?  I'm playing the original disc-based version.

I've noticed that missile units are silent in GOG's SMAX 2.0, if confirmation is still needed.

what about the Sold Out Software version.  That's what I use.

The only two audio clips that are messed because they are stereo:
wpn missile launcher.wav
wpn singularity laser.wav

There is no reason to replace the other four.

Yes.  There is also network node sound file I fixed here:

I've included all of fixed audio files as part of next patch installer (nn, plus two weapon ones remixed to mono by chuft).

I had never noticed this until I lost Planetary Pack, but in my GOG version (SMAX), I hear the missile sounds. However, in the old Planetary Pack release (patched) the sounds were cut off.

Tacky, tacky Firaxis. First sounds get cut off, then using 256 color mode that messes up some graphics cards on switch over.

Anyone verify?

Mastertronic/SOS had the same issue. I knew someone with that release. You had to patch that one, I believe.

Have you ever wondered why clouds behave in such familiar ways when each specimen is so unique? Or why the energy exchange market is so unpredictable? In the coming age we must develop and apply nonlinear mathematical models to real world phenomena. We shall seek, and find, the hidden fractal keys which can unravel the chaos around us.
