Not much to say. It's big. But it can be fun!
Done for my solo-play, it's not for an evening game, but because I prefer an epic struggle to a quick firefight.
You will play as much against yourself and your notions as the planet (and Planetmind) and the other factions.
You might want to turn on Tech Stagnation along with changing the Research Rate (in alphax.txt) to 50 so you won't burn through the Tech Tree before any confrontations occur.

Mandatory retirement year I have found the best thing to change. Up that number to as high as you can go. I hate time limits on Civ style games.

IMO, TechStag is my default. All Civ games even up to Civ 5 on regular settings and nice sized maps, your units are obsolete by the time they get ready to own the enemy. SMAX not as much, but I want to enjoy my impact rovers, thank you.

After a few quick run-throughs (about 200 turns or so, not to completion) trying different values for the Research Rate, I'd advise caution when using values under 40. 25 definitely lets you spend a lot more than 20 years using each type of weapon and armor, and lets you establish some bases while waiting for the next breakthrough. It's fun, and that's good.

And here we tinker with metal, to try to give it a kind of life, and suffer those who would scoff at our efforts. But who's to say that, if intelligence had evolved in some other form in past millennia, the ancestors of these beings would not now scoff at the idea of intelligence residing within meat?
