I think I have done this before, but I did not save the settings...

Has anyone successfully tweaked the values in alphax.txt to encourage the map generator to produce better islands? I'm trying to get a map which only has about 7 "equal-sized" islands, and these islands need to be reasonably large and continent like. The problem with existing map generator is that it tends to produce a string of mini islands, which when the landmass is mapped is merged to form continents.

I would advise you try setting Land Base somewhat small and playing around with Continent Base; you want it fairly large but not too large.  (If Continent Base is too large you'll get just one continent; if it's too small you'll get the mini islands you're describing.)  Scale the Land Modifier and Continent Modifier proportionally.
