Getting oneself out of the hole
« on: June 01, 2015, 02:02:39 PM »
During single-player game i managed to get myself into proverbial hole. I need advice on how to extract myself from it.
I was playing as the Drones. Starting on the small, small island i had little space to grow, until i became able to build sea units. looking around the world i wanted to make friends, and decided on the Data Angels a my best friend (also, thy were one of the strongest).
However, not everyone wanted to be friends with me. Zakharov for some strange reason attacked me, and i had to fight long and hard with inferior weaponry to get back one of my 3 land cities. Afterwards, i managed to achieve sea superiority over him and made myself at least somewhat safe from his ambitions.
During that debacle, othe faction decided to butt in. Peacekeepers stoe that city under my nose after i finally cleared Univercity troops out, so i had to declare Vendetta to take it. We mad e a truce soon after, but that did nt help my reputation.
To meet my pact duties i made war on Morganites. That was partly fueled by the fact i was competing with them to buid Ascetic Virtues, which was the matter of honor (after all, i only had one other secret project!) to my faction. Combination of aying siege to his capitol (destroying mines etc), sabotage attempts and cashing-in of my units did help me to succeed. With project complete, i took one city from Morgan (using the fact i knew where his troops were weak and my ability to carry my troops to there by sea) and made a truce, counting the taken city as a staging area for probable future invasion proper.
All things considered, that did not make Morgan my friend.
Now, things seemed pretty bright. I had a decent fleet of Chaos ships, plenty of sea colonies that continued to grow, claimed several other small islands. Another clash with Uivercoty soon left Provost asking for mercy and surrendering all techs he had to me.
Naturally, that was a mistake. Peacekeepers still were at his throat and continued to press on, getting base after base. So, i decided to stop them and got into Vendetta. This decision was bad because i had my things almost full on another front.
My pact sister, Datajack Rose, was waging war on Cyborgs, who held tech lead and used Hunter-Seeker algorithm to not shae any of it. Naturally that could not stand. Together, we mounted an invasion,, that took a city but soon faltered. Any attempt to move out was met with probe teams sealing units, until evenualy Cyborgs got the city back.
So i decided to try another way. A sea attack, with stack of cruisers escorting troop carrier with 2 veteran marine units, who would clean up all their sea expansion and then destroy (or, better, capture) Hunter-Seeker. That attack will be augmented by mindworms invasion of their main island.
Things were progressing reasonably well. After bombardments, my seasoned marines took a city after a city, until they all got to their true target. There was a troop concentration that seemed like a problem. The solution i chose was a nerve gas.
That was a mistake as well.
The moment i have used it, other factions took up arms. Morgan quickly recaptured his city (although he made a truce immediately after), and, worst of all, gaians attacked. They were already mad at me for not being a tree-hugger, but now they wanted my blood.
And i could not defend against them.
now, that leaves me in a hole that i made myself. My army still continues offensive against Cyborgs, who hate me passionately. but i cannot really reinforce them. Gaians' Isles of the Deep roam the seas and can strike at me anywhere, while my own defences look quite pale and my fleet is concentrated in one place, way out of position. Peacekeepers will finish munching up Univercity and they now control south seas. And with the loss of HQ, my Drone situation exploded out of control

So, i ask for advice: how can the stuation be fixed? Because i have no idea

Above all, built/buy a new HQ, preferably as close as possible to the center of your faction.
Get empath/trance gun foils in your territorium. Cheaper then cruisers, and should slow down a Gaian IoD rampage.

Once you start using nerve gas, better use it to the end!
(read my sig for more info on the question!)

Currently i do have several empath floats, i will try to contain gaians somewhat. Although losing my initial island will hurt me greatly - maybe i will be able to hold out there; i probably can just drown invaders in bodies (from borehole minerals).
One other thing is: Peacekeepers are building a fusion planet buster. Should try and make peace with them, it seems.

Steal the tech, built one yourself, and bust the base?

Thank everyone for thir advice.
A little something to report.

I had made peace with other factions with relative ease, however that was not to last. I have reaptured Free Drones Central and rebuilt the HQ, though.
My war with Cyborgs went somewhat poorly. Although i continued to hold their sea cities, they recaptured their land ones with sustained effort. I could from time to time capture one f their cities from sea, for them to reclaim it soon after.

The real problem came from diplomacy (or, rather, continued to do so). Quite soon i reached the point where any atrocity caused universal Vendetta on me. The worst was that Data Angels (who i had considered allies) used it every time to capture my outlying cities, often with good infrastructure. then they will make truce, and keep eyeing my other cities. Rest i could somewhat deal with, but Data Angels and i were mixied throughout the map, and i caould't keep myself covered against them.

Now, there is something else to add. With choppers in air, my cities were ceaned out form police and i was faced a fork of choices: let them starve or nerve staple them (soon both stopped to work and caused universal vendetta against me, which got old after 4th time). That really was not nice at all. I made interceptors as fast as i could, but they didn't work like i thought they would. When  have put them on alert, they did various things but never itercepted incoming choppers. Usually they stated to fly in circles in my turn or flying from city to city, completely ignoring all enemy choppers around.
I was able to hold back gaians, though, clean out heir sea units (well, they cleaned mine as well from time to time0 and start capturing their sea colonies. I have also attacked Morgn several times, getting absurd energy amounts from colony capture - but time and time again he just recaptured it with probe teams.
That showed me the errors of my ways. I thought that worms were immune to capture, but they were captured alongside the city - both if they were inside it or outside (1 tile away).
In the end, combination of universal vendettas, bleeding the coonies to Angels and getting my other cities (emptied by war) wrecked by wildlife caused me to slink away in shame.

From every defeat must someone get a hard lesson to remember.
Which one is it this time?

My guess is "don't overuse atrocities until you manage to get the UN charter repealed".

So noted. I will keep that in mind next time.

Or better: don't use atrocities if it's not enough to defeat your opponent(s).

During another single-player game i have entered into another (althought not so dire) situation.
It goes like this. I am Nautilus, and i sit very prettily in the sea. To the north-west are angry Spartans, and clockwise - Data Angels, Caretakers, then Hive to the West.
I was developing somewhat decently, filling the sea with my bases and even getting myself a somewhat nice foothold on Moonsoon Jungle to the south.
However, this carefree life was not to last. Spartans started a death march clockwise, eliminating first data angels, then Caretakers (who were my pact brothers at the time). It seems that my land holdings will come under attack next.
I have more population than Spartans (for now), although i am getting to the population limits ceiling, and am the Governor. Other thing i have going for me is +90 energy credits every year, which is ten times more then Sparta. For the moment, my units have the same tech level as theirs, with resonance lasers (6r) for me and gatling lasers for them.
However, they have around 1k of energy stored away and only way i can keep up with them in tech is probing.
Any advice would be appreciated
