The Youth's Struggle - An AAR By BlueFlux
« on: October 28, 2014, 11:40:35 PM »
This is my attempt at an AAR. I want to immerse readers of it into the world of the Creche. It will certainly require much more effort than a normal AAR, but it is definetly worth-it. As the updates go on, I will reveal more of Ron's backstory. I will attempt to make it more of a side-story when I decide to include some in an update. I do hope you enjoy this.
Here are the settings and map options. I will not introduce any of the factions, I want you to meet them through the AAR. Credit to JarlWolf for the Machine Mandate faction.

Keep in mind you can click on any of the pictures I post to get a higher-quality version

Update 1
Part 1 - The Dawn of the Creche
'The last sounds Ron remembered hearing before he floated into cryosleep were "What? What do you mean it's giving us an error? We've perfected these systems... It shouldn't be doing that!"
"There's nothing we can do about it now..." These were the last
things he could hear before he was sentenced to sleep for 40 years.'
In the present...
The engines died out after a day of floating in space. Finally. What remained of the Unity at this point in the crash site was a small
colony pod filled with children. Youth. Youth that had a daunting
task ahead of them. Form an empire of children. Something nobody before
had the guts to do. Until now. With Ron as their leader, children were quite
likely the last of human civilization. He stepped out and ran some soil through his
hands and tossed a rock out to sea. His mind quickly thought of history he could make.
Being the very first human to study any flora or fauna was where his thoughts wandered as he picked up a
strange pink flower. A sand-colored worm wriggled into the earth as he did so.
"Alright, lets get to work... We need a group to start unpacking supplies..."

2 - In the first year the most queer thing had happened. It seemed as if nobody was growing at all. Of course, Ron didn't have any concern yet. Perhaps it was the atmosphere? Explanations were not important for now, though.
The capital, dubbed 'The Creche' by Ron himself had formed quite nicely. A small settlement of 10,000 had been established, and the only major facitilites were the Headquarters of the Creche. But it was a working society on an alien rock. Perhaps the only one.
In other news, some of the more daring and brave children had taken up jobs as 'Scout Patrols'. They had already found a transport ship, bearing U.N insignia. One of the transports from the Unity. It appeared that many pods storing these existed. It was sent to explore and find
other humans.

3 -
'"It appears that the error has severely affected them in a large way, sir..." "Well? Spit it out." "Well, sir... They are not going to develop any time soon. In fact the error may have stopped their development entirely..."'
It had been four years. Ron was 15 and still hadn't the faintest signs of puberty.
Nobody was growing except the Newborns. And that process was extremely slow, they were just starting
to make their first sounds reminiscent of words. Few could walk, and their most basic functions had barely formed. The first 10,000 citizens didn't age at all. In other news, the native fungus was being investigated, and worms had actually attacked a scout team!
Also, the Unity Foil that was discovered had been attacked by some moving island-like creature.
The planet only seemed to get more hostile...

4- At last, researchers were put to the task of researching the DNA and genes of the Creche's citizens.
Ron was 18, and hadn't aged a day. You could say the exact same things about all original citizens. His personality
remained the same, and he got into the same mischief you would expect from a middle-school boy, only being serious when
the situation called for it. He was beggining to think that perhaps it wouldn't be so bad to stay young.
The sea expedition was a failure, and no other humans were found. Still, they pressed on. They found a sonar map on an old
Unity pod, and dubbed a portion of the sea with many undersea volcanoes the "Geothermal Shallows"
The Creche was growing slowly, and so were the babies. The colony pod would soon establish another base though, and this was
where Ron's main thoughts were primarily at.

5- When the Unity Foil was near what was assumed to be the North Pole of Chiron, a small group of dusty Battle Ogre Mark 1's
was found in the hull. These would go out and explore the Northern Strip of land. Perhaps even find civilization.

I'd love to know what everyone thinks on this type of AAR.

A very strange faction, but I am loving your approach... lots of insight to the characters, and society- it leaves me curious enough to have questions in my mind still too (as to why they aren't aging), but overall very crisp and detailed approach.

(I am guessing that mystery will be revealed in due time.)

Following with interest, comrade.

If they're all kids.. uh, how do they reproduce? Wouldn't giving birth alone kill a child 9/10 times? Are male children capable of producing fertile sperm?

So many questions that I don't want to ever know the answer to. Anyways, great AAR so far.

I did give a -1 growth penalty for that. You'll find out more as the story unfolds.
It appears doing this sort of like a fanfic works. I have material to work with, so writing is easier. One turn can last 2 paragraphs,  give some great story, and express better what is happening. I took a page out of Jarl's book by adding pictures and captions to the side of my screenshots.
Perhaps I'll even voice some of the more major events. Capturing the University... "At long last the siege of Cosmograd is broken and Zakharovs great society is ours! ..."

Update 2
You know, the most difficult part of AARing is the desire to just put down the notepad and play the game without any interruptions
The reason this update is so large is because I was determined to find other humans before the end of it. Here we go.

Part 2 - We Are Not Alone
This is very large, so I will put it into a spoiler.

Ending diplomacy:
Here are my conversations with the other faction leaders. They may not be in order, but I thought it was important to include them.

Map of the heart of the Red unit:

And now, some final dialogue for this massive update...
Ron was respected as a leader of a small, yet legitimate faction. He had fruitful conversations, and was not at war with anyone currently. Treaty's of Friendship with most faction leaders. He got in a temporary war with the peacekeepers, but before any blood was shed that ended. Finally the other humans had been discovered... Or he had been discovered, at the very least.

Interesting factions. It's kinda weird that a progenitor is part of human diplomacy but it makes it a tad bit more interesting.

Also, instead of screenshotting everything you can just explain smaller stuff (like a diplo log of that size) and screenshot big stuff.

On another note- I suggest you read up on the lore of the Machine Mandate.

Also on another note, there is a very real and terrifying reason  ;aki; and avatar the UNITY STARSHIP AI uses looks similar to each other... but if I told you I'd be spoiling something.

I'm just going to assume it's somewhere in the .txt file then...
It's not.
So will you reveal after the AAR is complete? <3
