The Society of Free Thought, a loose collection of anarchists, punks, and the like, was organised together by a New York political writer who figured the highly regimented UN mission could use some "shaking up". Serving as "useful drones" long enough to get themselves on the ship, they had some hackers program the computers to wake a large portion of the ship's inhabitants to wake up early, while *not* immediately waking the security forces and central UN leadership.
Needless to say, mass confusion immediately broke out.
Most of the rest of the crew were horrified at the Anarchists, and, in the absence of immediate central control, several rival groups assembled to fill the percieved need for protection from the potential chaos.
