Genetic warfare can be attempted by units with the Probe Module after the development of Retroviral Engineering. Genetic warfare can only be used on bases.

A genetic warfare probe action has the following effects:

  • The base loses population. The amount lost depends on a few factors, defensive technologies, defensive structures, and if the faction and base have been targeted before.
  • Each unit in the bases loses health. A random amount between one hp left, and half the hp of the unit. Defensive structures, and security interlocks can prevent this damage. But not technologies.

Using genetic warfare when the U.N. Charter are still in effect, is considered an Atrocity. It probably counts as a major atrocity and has ecological penalties.

Population lost

Normally a genetic warfare attack affects all population. There are 6 techs reducing damage from genetic warfare.

If a faction has been targeted before by genetic warfare it also counts as a tech. Probably due to the faction implementing security procedures. Which means that only five techs and a previous attack are needed for immunity.

Initial population loss formula

population loss = [max(1, total defensive technologies) - min(total defensive technologies, max(1, known defensive technologies + 1 if factions was targeted by genetic warfare before)] / max(1, total defensive technologies)
rounded down

All numbers in above formula are forced to be at least 1. Meaning the max population loss is 80% (rounded down).

Population loss is further halved (rounded down) by following facilities/factors:

So a base with both hospitals which was targeted before has a 87.5% reduction.

After all the above population loss factors are accounted for resulting population loss is increased by 1. Meaning that genetic warfare attack kills at least one citizen regardless of the above protections and reductions.

A genetic warfare attack can never reduce a base to lower than one population. So it can only reduce bases, not totally destroy them.
