The AntiMind is an early example of an over powered "Monster" faction designed to challenge experts or spice things up.  In fact, it is one of the earliest and most popular factions of it's type. The faction also fits in well with Alpha Centauri canon unlike many odd attempts at custom factions. They tend to do very well on abundant life form maps due to very high planet ratings enabling tons of mind worm captures. As the AI plays them are very grave early game threat. Despite their being powerful compared to standard alien factions, they are not ridiculously unbalanced and can be defeated by a skilled player.
