Research determines a faction's research output. This affects how quickly technology is discovered. A faction's research output is determined by a formula which includes all of your bases labs scores put together. That means the research score alters the final amount rather than the actual number of lab points at each base. A faction that starts with a research score of -2 or lower does not accrue research until mission year 2110.
