Going through xscript.txt file to make corrections  for a mod, I found this entry:
Quote
#ARTIFACTTECH1
#xs 320
#caption Science Officer
A power surge from the alien artifact has shorted
out the Network Node at $BASENAME0!

Proceed
Zoom to Base Control

Has anyone got that event? Sounds not pleasant, like the Network Node is effected. how? destroyed?

It is not listed here:

It looks like an intended-but-never-implemented alternate result when plugging in an artifact to a network node (probably destroying the node and the artifact, and probably with a chance of it happening each time you plugged in an artifact).

I had that feeling, it was something like that. Such event would make AA much less worth connecting to network node.
There are more not implemented events, as I think, that I found reading xscript.txt

I've experienced it twice since 2000, a long time ago. Indeed, node and artifact both destroyed.

Well, at least it seems to be not a very frequent occurrence :)

It was like the Major Asteroid Impact. For a while, nobody reported it, then a few did, now it's heard of from time to time.

There are two kinds of scientific progress, the methodical experimentation and categorization, which gradually extend the boundaries of knowledge, and the revolutionary leap of genius which redefines and transcends those boundaries. Acknowledging our debt to the former, we yearn, nonetheless, for the latter.
~Academician Prokhor Zakharov
