Do you like online shopping?
« on: December 08, 2015, 01:38:14 PM »
This year, most our holiday shopping was online.

Of that, there were 5 packages purchased on black Friday.

3 have arrived as planned.

1 is lost in shipping limbo.
1 I just barely got an update that it's finally processing (after sitting for 2 weeks).

I've had problems with other orders as well that I needed in a certain time frame, and I'm not exactly last minute shopping, but I'll order stuff with a 5-7 day shipping time for Halloween (non Halloween items, mind) in September, and had to make special arrangements when the companies in question couldn't deliver by Halloween.

So for me, I do like online for allowing me to purchase hard to find items, or BULK items, and I respect it's intended convenience for shopping other items, but still prefer to just grab something locally and have it in hand.  There's a lot fewer things that can go wrong that way.

Online prices generally overcome my "I want it now" tendencies, but shipping has turned me off somewhat. Amazon uses Lasership for my area, which is a horrible horrible company by many accounts. And I don't like having to email people because my package, marked as delivered, is not to be found anywhere and then magically appears three days later.

I've come to avoid Amazon whenever possible.  There's very few things I can't find cheaper elsewhere.  Occasionally organizing a group purchase to get that better price.  (I get 100 people to buy 1, to reach the 100 item price cut, and distribute them).  Lately, though, most my purchases have been of the bulk variety outside the holidays.  hEt does more of the individual item purchases.

I didn't know how to answer the poll.
Thinking about it, I guess what I like the most when it comes to shopping is selection. It's hard to beat the selection on the internet. Having been a small/family business guy, I support those endeavors whenever I can, but more often it's services rather than goods. Our groceries come from an employee owned supermarket which has a fabulous selection.

My wife loves to shop. As far as Christmas goes, the only person I have to shop for is her. Because she starts hunting for the best price as soon as she sees something she wants, she rarely has a list that the rest of us can work from. This year I again had to Google lists of "gifts for her" "Gifts for the woman who has everything" "Gifts for people who are hard to buy for" etc. I have to find stuff before she knows she wants it. Easier on the internet.

Amazon put in a warehouse about an hour away, so dealing with them is fairly reliable now.

I do most of my shopping online (got 4/5 of my last Amazon order today - 2 games, a movie, and a Poul Anderson anthology). I even order my pizza online (Papa John's). I do my grocery shopping by phone.

But some things have changed since Walmart decided to be customer-unfriendly. Now you have to have a minimum $50 order for free shipping, and since they overpack stuff, that results in Canada Post refusing to bring the box to my door. Since I'm disabled and my walker is not strong enough to act as a shopping cart, my Walmart purchases have gone waaaay down. I used to buy cat litter from them, in bulk. Now I don't. I have to pay more from the local grocery store, but at least the manager was willing to negotiate a deal for bulk orders ($2 discount/pail) and he totes them up here himself - six 7 kg pails at a time.
