Makes me think, though: what happened to clowns, anyway? Were they always creepy and people just suppressed it better? Was it just the influence of Gacy and King's It that made them sinister, or were they just symptomatic of the change? Who changed, us or the clowns?
Should we begin to lay odds whether it's someone dressed as a clown that gets hurt, or a clown hurts someone first?
I was always OK with Emit Kelly, Ronald McDonald, and The Town Clown. BUT generally clowns give me more of a creepy vibe than a funny one. Much like internet trolls, they seemed to be disguised because they were up to no good. I often wondered how many criminals were hiding in the traveling circus as clowns.
I was more a captain kangaroo person. Clowns were for the rodeo.
Captain Kangaroo was Clarabelle the Clown on Howdy Doody...
As for opera, did you mean Pagliacci ? also from wiki-
"Around 1890, when Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana premiered, Leoncavallo was a little-known composer. After seeing Mascagni's success, he decided to write an opera in response: one act composed in the verismo style. Leoncavallo claimed that he based the story of Pagliacci on an incident from his childhood:[1] a murder in 1865, the victim of which was a Leoncavallo family servant, Gaetano Scavello. The murderer was Gaetano D'Alessandro, with his brother Luigi an accomplice to the crime. The incident resulted from a series of perceived romantic entanglements involving Scavello, Luigi D'Alessandro, and a village girl with whom both men were infatuated.[2] Leoncavallo's father, a judge, was the presiding magistrate over the criminal investigation."

Police in eastern Pennsylvania are trying to figure out who stabbed a 16-year-old to death during a fight that broke out after a person showed up wearing a clown mask.
Authorities said the incident happened Sunday night around 8:30 p.m. in Reading, located about 50 miles northwest of Philadelphia.
"We urge anyone who was there to contact the Reading police," Berks County District Attorney John T. Adams told the Reading Eagle. "Someone was wearing a clown mask and a fight broke out. Anyone who knows anything about this, please contact the Reading police.
Officials told the newspaper they responded to reports of a person lying on a front porch of a home, and that there was a large crowd in the street. The Reading Eagle identified the victim as Christian Torres, 16, who was a 10th-grader at Reading High School.
Reading Police Chief Andres Dominguez Jr. told the newspaper that investigators believe there are several suspects.
“I believe the issues got out of control,” Dominguez told the Reading Eagle. “Everyone in the neighborhood knows each other."
(police chief) Berlin said in a release "Two morons dressed as clowns terrorize teens, are arrested."
Contrary to reports making the rounds across the country, neither Torres nor the suspect in the stabbing was wearing a clown mask at the time of the killing, Rentschler said.

Lancashire Police said the force was investigating the incident.
A spokesperson said: 'We have had it reported to us that a 28-year-old was walking home alone in Haslingden Road, Blackburn, at around 8.45pm on October 9, and has been approached by someone dressed as a clown.
'It appears the clown has pulled out a knife which the victim, from Blackburn, has tried to grab.'
Simon Chinery, 28, said the masked attacker sliced his right hand "down to the bone" with a 10in blade damaging four ligaments.
Father-of-one Mr Chinery claims he was walking away from a service station cash point when the clown crept up behind him.
Mr Chinery, who works as a joiner, said he grabbed the knife to stop the clown doing any serious harm to his body and his fingers "exploded" following the altercation.
He was taken to hospital for doctors to try and repair the damage.
Mr Chinery, of Blackburn, Lancashire, said: "I had never been so petrified in all my life. It has left me feeling sick to the bottom of my stomach – it was literally something from a horror movie."
The incident, which happened in Blackburn City Centre on October 9, involved a clown which Mr Chinery describes as "petrifying".
He describes the clown as dressed in a green wig, with black eye make-up, red nose and red beard. The clown donned a green jacket, white fitted top, big black boots and rubber latex gloves.
Describing the attack, Mr Chinery said: "It wasn't a mask of sorts, it was more scary makeup.
"I just panicked when I saw the knife – he pointed it towards me and I just used my instinct by grabbing the knife and he pulled at the same time.
"In that moment I think I just wanted the knife away from me, I could have been in intensive care or worse if it had slashed my neck.
"My fingers then just exploded – there was blood everywhere. I didn't know what to do because it all happened so quickly, but the knife just sliced it down to the bone.
"I just ran home and my mum called for an ambulance."
As Mr Chinery, who was later taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital, fell to the floor he tried to punch the attacker with his left hand – as the clown ran off.
Doctors told Mr Chinery that they do not know the long-lasting extent of his injury and will need to carry out reconstructive surgery on his hand.
Mr Chinery said: "This attack has ruined my life – I am disabled from this and cannot return to the trade and job which I love.
"The doctors have already told me I will never get the same movement out of my hand I had before. I've lost my job – I might have to have several operations to remove ligaments from my leg into my hand.
"You can still see the blood coming through on the dressing – it's awful. I'm going to look into compensation. That's all I can do now."
He added: "I am just glad it was me and not my nine-year-old son or my young nieces or nephews."
Asked what he thought of the clown craze sweeping the UK, Mr Chinery added: "I was absolutely hysterical when I saw him.
"I'm a former kickboxer so it wasn't as if I'm scared of clowns – I think it was just seeing the knife which was the shocking thing.
"People behaving like this really need to stop – I have been having nightmares and the pain is unreal. This clown craze is getting out of control."
Lancashire Police are investigating the incident, but are yet to interview Mr Chinery.

A teenage boy attacked in a ‘killer clown’ prank has warned that people could die as the craze sweeps the country.
Owen Russell, aged 17, was left covered in blood after a branch was thrown at him by a clown trying to terrorise people in Dinnington.
The six form student, from Anston, said he was lucky not to have been killed or to have lost an eye in the attack.
He said he and a group of his friends spotted the clown, who had a ‘sinister laugh’, on a path off Scarsdale Street on Tuesday night.
When challenged by the teens as the clown approached them, the masked attacker walked off carrying a branch before turning round and hurling it at the group - hitting Owen on the side of his head, and leaving him with a V-shaped wound which needed stitches.
“I felt my head and there was blood everywhere. I had to take my T-shirt off to try to stop it while my friends chased the clown, but he got away,” said Owen.
“He started to run once he realised he had hit me. He knew what he had done but he didn’t stop. There was blood everywhere.”
Owen said he was lucky not to have been seriously injured or killed.
“I could easily have lost an eye or been killed - this clown craze has to stop now, it’s getting out of control.
“I’d heard about clown sightings in other parts of the country but would never have expected it in Dinnington. It was a bit surreal and freaky when we fist saw the clown in the distance but then to deliberately hurt someone takes this craze a step too far.
“People doing this to frighten people need to stop before somebody dies.”
On the same night there were reports of a clown chasing a group of children in Dinnington and earlier this week a pregnant woman and toddler were also reportedly chased. Reports have also been received of a clown armed with a baseball bat frightening people while driving around Wickersley with clown music blaring out of their car.
Owen’s father, John Russell, said: “This clown thing has gone too far, it’s getting ridiculous. It’s pathetic, absolutely pathetic.
“Owen was badly injured but it could have been so much worse. I was shocked when I saw him covered in blood. The branch just missed his eye by a matter of inches. “People dressing up as clowns and doing things like this need to stop now before it’s too late.”
A police investigation into the incident is underway. Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101.

NEWARK, NJ – A man dressed as a clown was shot in the city’s West Ward last night. The shooting was reported just after 10:30 p.m. by Vailsburg Park.
Newark police were called just after 10:30 p.m. last night to Oraton Parkway and S. Munn Ave., near the Parkway North entrance ramp, on a report of a shooting. When police arrived they found a man in a clown costume shot in his head in critical condition.
A spokesperson for the Newark Police Department said a silver SUV, driven by an African-American male, pulled up alongside of the clown. According to the spokesperson’s statement, the man got out of the car and fired several shots. The man then got back in the SUV and headed north on the Garden State Parkway.
“This isn’t the first shooting that’s happened around, resident Earl Johnson said. “They happen often around here, but never involving a f**king clown.”
The spokesperson said he doesn’t know why people are dressing in clown outfits, but he said he suspects fear is a factor across the city.
“I just think it’s insane. People better take those clown masks off before the coroner does,” Johnson said.
The victim, who has been identified as Carlos Mendoza, 31, was transported to University Hospital were he was pronounced dead. The suspect in the shooting has not be identified however authorities are actively searching for his whereabouts.

Happened at an ATM. So, this could be prank gone bad or attempted robbery gone bad using clown hysteria as a cover. Or kickboxer making up a story on why he's been cut...
A father-of-one who claimed he had been left 'disabled for life' after being attacked by a 'killer clown' made it up, police have revealed.
Simon Chinery, 28, said he was attacked by a clown at a cash machine and had suffered serious ligaments injuries to his hand from a 10-inch blade.
However Lancashire Police now say the man was 'not attacked by a clown and had in fact injured his hand falling on broken glass'.
They said he had been issued a fine for wasting police time.
Chinery even claimed he'd lost his job due to the severity of his injuries and described in detail what the clown was wearing in Blackburn, Lancs.
A spokesperson from Lancashire Police said: 'After looking into this report we have established that the man was not attacked by a clown and had in fact injured his hand falling on broken glass.
'We are aware that widespread media coverage of this allegation may have been unsettling for local residents and we would like to reassure the public that no crime has taken place on this occasion.
'We have now issued a 28-year-old man from Blackburn with a penalty notice for wasting police time.
'We work extremely hard investigating serious crime and our time needs to remain focused on genuine incidents.'

October 30th confluence.
I mentioned above how the forest clowns were coming from American Horror Story, and the Knifey city clowns were coming from The Purge.
For anyone unfamiliar, The Purge series is one set in a near future where the government sets aside one day where there are no rules. Everything is legal. People go out in masks and kill and loot and rape, etc.
Since that series inception, several "Purge" events have attempted/threatened to organize for specific areas via social media. Concept being if you could raise a mob, the cops wouldn't be able to stop things. To date, none have been successful.
Enter the clowns.
Random teen makes fake account and promises nation wide clown purge for October 30th. This thing is blowing up hardcore. News could be grabbing it soon, which will just make it worse.
behaviour that has the potential to generate fear can lead to a criminal record.
Overall, there are a LOT of confirmed beatings and stabbings from both sides of the clown line. MORE IN UK/EUROPE THAN IN THE STATES.
The amount of fake news is overwhelming. With the purge being a no-show, I'm guessing we'll die down swiftly now in the states. POSSIBLY a spike just after elections, but then done. Outside the states, I got no clues, they're treating it more as an excuse to be hooligans where here it's more a trendy prank.
Clowns have just hit Asia this morning as well. We'll see what form it takes THERE.
I haven't heard of anything like this where I am. Just googled it and it's happening all over the world including in my state and country. What caused or started this?
A game of hide-and-go-seek quickly turned terrifying for three Pennsylvania children after they were chased through the woods by two armed men dressed as scary clowns.
Dylan Milkowski, 8, of West Mifflin told KDKA that he was outside playing a game with two friends when they spotted two men dressed in clown costumes and carrying weapons.
"They had pipes and they had shotguns," he said. "They were chasing us."
The boy's father, Michael Milkowski, said the kids came screaming and running into the house Saturday around 4:15 p.m. At first Michael didn't believe the kids were being chased by creepy clowns, but when he went outside to investigate he saw two masked suspects running up a nearby hill.
Two Central Lafourche High School students were given community service and placed on unsupervised probation for six months for wearing clown masks while driving around the school, the district attorney said.
Meanwhile, a Lockport man is awaiting trial in another incident involving a clown mask.
State law prohibits people from wearing masks in public places to hide or conceal their identities, except for festivities like Halloween and Mardi Gras. A conviction could mean six months to three years in prison.
Now a harrowing clip of the suspected gunman wearing a terrifying clown mask and pointing a toy gun at the camera has emerged.
"The shooter is a student who is dressed in black and who is adept at Satanism.
"He is a fan of Metal, in particular. He is known to be rather lonely."
After a few months off the radar, “creepy clowns” are apparently back — and now, they’re armed with snakes.
Police in Fargo, North Dakota were called on Saturday after two men frightened a group of children. One man was wearing a clown mask, the other was holding a three to four foot long boa constrictor.
According to WDAZ-TV, one child to their parent that a man chased the child with a knife, and asked if the child wanted “to see any dead bodies.” KVLY-TV reports that one of the men also threatened to kill a child.
No charges have been filed, but if the men are found they could face charges of terrorizing — a Class C felony.
“Creepy clown” sightings were commonplace throughout the country last fall in September in October, with sightings confirmed in at least eight states. Clown sightings led to a school district near Cincinnati to close for a day, and one teenaged girl was arrested for asking a man wearing a clown mask to murder her teacher.

Denver police have arrested a man who was wearing clown makeup when he allegedly stabbed and slashed a 29-year-old man to death with a glove that had blades attached to the end of each finger.
Christian Lee Gulzow, 36, allegedly attacked the victim at 12:49 a.m. Tuesday following an argument near Torchy’s Tacos at West 11th Avenue and Broadway, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
The Denver coroner’s office identified the victim as Brian Lucero, 29. The cause of death was a stab wound, according to a coroner’s office news release.
Witnesses told police that the suspect, wearing white clown makeup accented with black streaks on the face, suddenly began threatening the victim with a glove with blades that were 2- to 3-inches long. They were near the Corner Store at West 10th Avenue and Broadway.
Gulzow began pummeling the victim, who tried to dodge the blows, the police report says. The victim eventually punched the suspect, who then yelled at the victim and followed him to Torchy’s. The two were the only ones in the restaurant parking lot.
“The victim collapsed in the north east parking lot of the Torchy’s business,” the report says.
Gulzow allegedly fled on a scooter, the police report says.
Police spotted a man on a Denver Public School’s HALO camera riding a scooter matching the suspect’s appearance in the 900 block of Galapago Street.
They saw the man throw an object in the bushes. Police went to the building and found a knife in the bushes, the police report says.
Police found the man at West Alameda Avenue and Lipan Street. His clothes were covered in blood, the report says.
When interviewed at police headquarters Gulzow said a man threatened him and yelled at him “to get out of my alley.” He claimed the victim attacked him and stole his scooter, the court records say.
Gulzow said he may have hurt the victim when he tackled the victim while he was riding away on Gulzow’s scooter. The victim may have fallen on one of Gulzow’s spiked wrist bracelets, Gulzow told police. The suspect also acknowledged that he may have cut the victim while he jabbed him with his “clawed glove.”
Gulzow’s account was different from those offered by witnesses, the report says.
Gulzow’s jail nickname is Diablo. He has an extensive criminal history with multiple domestic violence, assault and weapons convictions. In 2012, he was convicted of felony menacing with a deadly weapon, according to Colorado Bureau of Investigation records.
Another clown sighting has been reported in Pennsylvania, making it the first in a really long while.
According to WCMH-TV Columbus, a clown attempted to draw in a nine-year-old girl traveling around the neighborhood on her scooter with money.
Wilkes-Barre authorities explain that the incident, which took place around 10:10 in the morning, involved the clown appearing from behind the girl. He proceeded to give her either a $20 or $50 bill to get her to come with him.
The attempt was unsuccessful as the little girl instead ran screaming toward her grandmother's house. The clown, on the other hand, ran and disappeared into a railroad trestle nearby.
The police say the clown was thin and tall with his face and arms painted white. He had red hair that parted in the center and wore blue-and-red polka dot shirt and yellow pants.
It was back in March since the last clown sighting was reported in Pennsylvania. The incident involved a couple of armed men dressed as clowns and terrorized a group of children.
"My kid came running in the house screaming that there were two guys chasing him," Michael Milkowski, a father of three, told KDKA. He adds:
I said to my kids "are you lying or something" and they were like "no we're being really serious." I looked over and they showed me where they were and there's two guys running up a hillside.
Clown sightings, however, started summer of last year with the first one documented in South Carolina, where a group of creepy clowns tried to lure kids into the woods.
Since then, the cases of clown scares shot up and ultimately spread in different regions including parts of the United Kingdom. Majority of the sightings, however, occurred in the United States although many of the cases are pranks and imitations.
CINCINNATI - A federal lawsuit alleges a 12-year-old was illegally arrested, improperly prosecuted and unfairly disciplined at Sycamore Junior High School over social media posts he made during the “crazy clown” craze last year.
In their suit, the boy’s parents say his Instagram comments made no direct threats, yet police unlawfully detained, searched and arrested him; school officials suspended and threatened to expel him in violation of district policy; and the county prosecutor continues to prosecute him under trumped-up charges in Hamilton County Juvenile Court.
The suit claims the school district and police conspired to make an example out of the boy by having him arrested him at school and leading him through the halls in handcuffs - against district policy - so other students could see and take it as a warning.
The suit challenges the constitutionality of the Ohio law under which the boy was later charged with communications harassment after the original charge - inducing panic - was dropped. The boy, now 13, denies the charges.
According to the lawsuit, the punishment against the boy started on Sept. 30, 2016 – the day after he made two posts on the Clown Clan Instagram account.

The other said: “I’ll square up to these stupid coons.” According to the lawsuit, the boy intended to type “clowns” but mistyped the word and his phone autocorrected it to “coons.”
The boy used his own phone and Instagram account and posted from his home after school hours, the suit points out. He deleted his posts two hours later.
At the time, reports of people dressing in scary clown masks and clown suits were causing alarm in the Tri-State and around the country. Social media posts that these “crazy clowns” were seen near schools or intended to be in the area caused some schools and police to send warnings to parents. In extreme cases, a few schools closed.
After Sycamore officials encountered a similar post from another older junior high student the morning after the boy’s posts, the district alerted parents and said they considered them hoaxes and believed they posed no danger to students or staff. Yet, they called Montgomery Police to investigate, and police arrested the older student and walked him out in handcuffs.
According to the suit, the 12-year-old boy was in class taking a test when he was summoned to the principal’s office. Assistant principal Damon Davis pulled him into his office and informed him that another student had told school officials about his posts. Davis had the boy write a statement, then left the room, leaving a teacher with the boy. When Davis returned, the assistant principal told the boy he had violated the school’s Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying policy and had disrupted school and he was going to be suspended for 10 days with a recommendation for expulsion.
Davis then allowed Montgomery police Sgt. Gregory Harris interview the boy alone in his office. Harris searched the boy without a warrant or probable cause, failed to inform him of his Miranda rights and arrested him on a charge of inducing panic, the suit says.
The school tried to contact the boy’s parents, but failing to do so, took the boy aside alone anyway – against district policy, according to the lawsuit.
The suit claims police and school officials acted in concert against the boy. The boy’s father said he called Harris that afternoon and Harris said the boy could have been processed at school and released to his parents, but Harris said the school district “wanted us to arrest them.”
Later, Sycamore Superintendent Frank Forsthoefel reduced the boy’s suspension to five days and held his expulsion in abeyance. That was because the boy had not violated the HIB policy or disrupted school, the suit says.
Five months after the incident, the boy filed a motion last February to dismiss the inducing panic charge. That led to new charges.
“Knowing that the criminal charge … should be dismissed, the Hamilton County Juvenile Prosecutor instructed Sgt. Harris to bring new charges ... so that the case ... would continue. Thus, on April 12, 2017, Sgt. Harris signed three new complaints,” the suit says.
The new complaints, which accused the boy of harassing the operator of the Clown Clan Instagram account and causing public alarm through his Twitter feed are “patently false,” the suit claims.
But after dismissing the inducing panic charge on April 17, the prosecutor filed new three orally amended charges based on Harris’s claims, the suit says.
Those charges claim communications harassment, but the suit claims the Ohio law cited in the charges violates the boy’s freedom of speech.
The suit seeks monetary and punitive damages and an injunction to prevent further prosecution.
A Sycamore Community Schools spokeswoman said Thursday the district had not seen the lawsuit and would not comment. Hamilton County Prosecutor's Office spokeswoman Julie Wilson said the prosecutor is reviewing the lawsuit.
While social media "threats" of clowns caused a stir in several Tri-State communities last fall, many police departments expressed the view that most of the "threats" were pranks played by copy cats.
In one case, police charged a woman they said made up a report that she was attacked by a clown with a knife because she was running late to her job at McDonald’s. Around the same time, reports of clown attacks forced schools in Reading to cancel classes.
An officer responded to Sharonville Elementary for a report of a "clown" wearing gloves and large shoes in a wooded area at the school, police said. Police later said they found no evidence to indicate anyone was doing anything menacing in or near the school, they said.
It’s enough to make Frank McAndrew, a Knox College professor of psychology and self-described “expert on creepiness,” suspect a connection to last year’s spate of clown sightings.
Police said Berry duct taped the machete to his amputated arm.
Sean Paulston, who has a phobia of clowns, rowed with a group of youngsters because one of them was wearing the mask.
Kelly Vine who was stood nearby told Mr Paulston, then 28, to ‘pick on someone his own size’ before slapping him round the head. Miss Vine called her boyfriend Jackson Brett, 20, who came to the scene in Somerstown, Portsmouth, Hants, and stabbed Mr Paulson.
Mr Lawson told Portsmouth Crown Court: ‘Mr Paulston became frightened when approached by the person wearing a clown mask, who he asked to leave him alone. The attack took place in the grounds of Edgbaston House in Sedgley Close (Picture: Solent News) ‘He became increasingly agitated, when Kelly Vine, who was stood nearby, got involved – telling him to pick on someone his own size and slapping him around the head.’ The prosecutor said Miss Vine then made a phone call to her boyfriend, who turned up with a knife and got involved in the argument.
Mr Lawson said: ‘The defendant ran on to the scene and began attacking the victim, who kicked out to defend himself. ‘Mr Brett kept on hitting him before stabbing him twice. He was left bleeding from his stomach and back leading to him falling on the floor before being taken to hospital.’ The court heard Mr Paulston was left with a four centimetre wound in his lower back and a two centimetre slash in his stomach.

I'll bet € 1,000 fake forum money that it's a clown gets hurt first, not for lack of sick freaks trying.I'd point out that I was only betting who'd get badly beaten up first, and that was a long time ago...

The body of the 47-year-old woman, identified only as Caroline D, was found in the garage of her home in the town of Oudenburg, near the Belgian port city of Ostend.
Police found her children, aged 12, 15 and 17, tied up in the attic, having allegedly been forced to watch the pair butcher their mother.
"I'm a monster, I know that," the clown laughed in the video before reportedly calling the kids' school to say they would be late on Monday.
"I'm no longer a clinic clown but a crimiclown," he told the terrified kids. "That's how I will become famous."

Leipere, who cheers up sick children for a living, had recently split up with Caroline D because he could not get on with her kids.
After allegedly killing the woman, the Belgium's Got Talent stars confessed to the cops and went on the run, reports claim.
Leipere drove to his nearby home town of Breedene, where he climbed onto the roof of a 13-story block of flats and started firing a gun into the air while threatening to jump.
He also threw debris and a gas bottle he found on the roof down onto the streets below, but fortunately nobody was injured.

After a lengthy stand-off, in which Leipere was pinned down by snipers on adjacent rooftops, he eventually surrendered and was arrested.
Haegheman was arrested later that day by police officers in the town of Melle in the Belgian province of East Flanders.
Police believe Leipere convinced Haegheman to help him take revenge on Caroline D., and her children, as he was devastated by the end of their relationship.
She reportedly broke up with the clown, who performed for sick children in hospitals under the aliases of Clown Tobi or Doctor Aspirin, because her children disliked him.
Doesn't matter.
-But I smell a rat about a Belgian clown making the "crimiclown" pun that surely only works in English... -Also, I don't think this one counts; he was a real clown, not some idjit playing the same kind of creepy-game as this thread's about...
