Is it possible to upload a personal avatar or do you have to choose from the existing ones (or ask BUncle to add your own to the public ones)?

you can buy a custom avatar from our shop for a mere 200EC :)
EC can be earned by posting (1EC each post) and starting new threads (5EC each new thread)

I'm definitely going to upload a full(er) set of SMAC(X) avatars, but lately, I'm as busy as a satyr at the Playboy mansion.  But it is going to happen one of these days, in consultation with my partner, and those official ones are free to put on -or change, I think- at no charge.

Naturally, I will take requests for custom avatars.  Here is good as anywhere...

EC (energy credits) are displayed in post bits under the number of posts you made.
EC are earned by posting but can also be gifted.

I haven't really thought of what I was going to do for an avatar yet. I was going to google some stuff eventually, and was probably going to do something completely random(like the 777 I got from the slots) or something funny off of google. If you want to take the time to make something for me though I will use it. If you were hoping for a more specific idea, well like I said I didn't really think about it yet.

I just want to remind everyone that AC2 official, pre-installed avatars, especially the SMAC(X) ones, like the custom faction one I'm wearing, are free.  You can put them on the second you register, or change them, without spending posting energy credits.  It's only if you want something we don't have, say, of Angelina Jolie in Cyborg II, for an avatar that you have to compile 200 EC.

Now, if there's anything, anything Alpha Centauri you want that isn't already installed, let me know; it's highly unlikely that I don't already have it made. 

So don't run around the forum nekkid; that's gross.  Throw on an avatar.  Please.

Hmmm.

Okay, I've thought it over, and new policy until such time as a lotta people are earning enough EC, or my partner says otherwise:  I'll hook you up with what you want, avatarwise, gratis, no strings attached within forum rules and some standards of decency.  Just post and ask - providing a pic to avatarize, or an actual avatar, would be nice, too.

Also, I recently uploaded every SMAC(X) avatar I have to the free User CP selection -that's a LOT more than before- and more are coming as I cycle through my build queue.

The system is set up as it is for some good reasons; we want people in SMAC(X) avatars for a preference, and we want to motivate activity, which earns you EC to buy custom Avatars.  But it's not right for a forum with me in it to have a lot of people running around nekkid.  For now, I'll just take care of anyone who asks.

I just think I went overboard before, trying to make the techs last me as many days as I could flog out of them.  There's a couple of variations I can think of to do with Tech082 up there, but not really any good-looking ones.

Hey, everybody missed an opportunity - when I recently uploaded all the SMAC(X) avatars I've ever made, I included 28 tech ones that I'd made at 100x100, before it struck me that when users without big avatar privileges put them on and the forum resized them -my reason for going big,; the forum would just shrink them- any transparent backgrounds would be ruined. But these -all the variations from tech 075 through the first of tech 81- could put on from the User CP gallery by anyone, without any resizing or associated problems.  In fact there were also two techs and something in symbols that I neglected to resize at all - when my test DL put one on, only 2/3rds fit in the postbit column.

Everything's fixed, and while I was messing with that stuff, I completed the set of techs.  Everything but blank dummy tech087.   I'm going to start on the Sercret Project icons next, though I haven't decided whether to put them in techs or symbols.

So I hereby announce a contest:  find a SMAC(X) avatar -I had nothing to do with anything else thus far installed- in the User CP gallery that needs fixing bad, put it on, and post in this thread to taunt me.  (Duplicates don't count - I'll clean those up one of these days, but it's not a high priority.)

The prize is getting to taunt me.

We are considering awarding some big avatars to a few deserving people, so be sure to be active posting and adding content - and showing us you can keep it up long-term.  Loyalty gets noticed, and should be rewarded.

I honestly don't care for this system; EC inflation is bound to happen. One should also denote Spammage will result in BANs.

It's kinda like Frontier Economy. Its useful and all, but mostly during early game (until BU finishes overunning CGN with his Impact Rover Rush)

If you want some EC inflation, deposit what you have in the bank - ariete has gazillions from depositing 50 EC in April.  Wait roughly two months, and you'll never have to ask for a custom avatar installation from me, ever - as long as you have the avatar.

- Well, actually it comes free at 20,000 posts, and is not for sale. However, I started in the Bank before ariete and have deposited far more EC than anyone, thousands, mostly made posting science news, and I made more interest than that today.  I laugh at 20,000 EC. Ha. Ha.

The punchline is that I can never get the Transcendi icon, even though I'll get to 20 thousand posts long before anyone else - I'm stuck as an engineer forever.

Petty new AC2 forum rule that I will enforce -unless sisko vetoes:  I used to get spam used on me as an insult word a lot, not because of the content of my posts, but just because I posted a lot and internet people can't seem to agree on a meaning of the term, except that spam sux hardcore.

What NAOP just said is super-fine, but if I hear the S-word applied to/aimed at members casually as an insult, my back is going to get up, and watch me go all nerdbadge on somebody. I'm half serious.  I was bleeping TROLLED for months straight with that moldy old spam bull[poop] last year, and I will [intercourse]ing lose it and abuse my powers if I hear that [poop] on my forum.

How about betting EC. I say Earthmike is going to stomp newbie but well meaning T ras into the fungus. Not even Cha dawn will be able to recognize the aftermath. So much so I put 200 EC and my chance of ridding myself of a cool 8 bit mindworm avatar on the line.

...A few weeks ago, I noticed that everyone with no avatar got a "No Avatar" avatar - I assume The Emmisary changed a setting.

So, just a reminder that I am Mr. Custom Avatar, and if anyone simply can't find anything cool in the gallery found under Modify Profile>Forum Profile, unlikely as that is, let me know what you want, and I will hook you up.

(I've been reading a lot of Star Trek stuff online lately, and thinking idly about making some more avatars on those lines - there's quite a few already laying around that I could add if I worked up the energy...)

I personally don't mind myself for my factions. Even having the basis as potential avatars would be pretty neat, I'd be proud to see people don my faction bases  :danc:

80x80 size.  .jpgs and .pngs work fine - I don't know about animated .gifs, though I think still ones work for sure.  We could experiment, and find out...

Right, the issue I have is that I do not know how to make the avatars transparent on forums. I am basically just cutting out my various faction bases as avatars, and that's the issue with them.

As for the faction leaderhead ones, I can easily do those, just I need to actually do them. Had a bit of a headache trying to figure out ways to make the base avatars work.

So I'll need a bit of help with the former.


Also on the topic of avatars, I think the basic units should be avatars: Like Colony Pods, Formers, etc. should all be their own avatar.

Edit: in other words for the leaderhead ones, I am lazy and I'll do it later.

For transparent backgrounds?  You remember my article about cutting buildings out in GIMP and the stuff about making a backgroundless working copy to paste into the .pcx?  Do that transparent background stuff, and save the avatar as a .png when you're done.  .gifs should also work.  Easy.

Transparencies work like that for most everything, provided they're the right size - resizing ruins the background.



Folks, if I know Jarl, and I do, he'd be pretty happy to take requests.  There's a lot of gratification in doing little quick art jobs like avatars for people.

Right, here is the leaderhead avatars of various factions I've made or had a hand in making.

I'll even add in a few tidbits on their background/story, though for a more full on approach to that I will refer you to read their custom faction pages. I'll provide links to those somewhere on this page.

Sagar is the leader of the Exterminatus, which is a cooperated creation between me and Green1 (I made the graphics a bit of the concept/naming, he did everything else for the most part.) His faction is bent on the eradication of Centauri and other impure life forms to further the evolution of the Progenitor race. As for his personality, he's a fervent fundamentalist who believes his mission is not only vital to the survival of their species, but is a holy task that is sacred to progenitors as a whole.

Richard Warrick was a former British police chief who made record advances in survelliance and crime prevention measures and technology. He leads the fascist faction on planet, where they focus on ultra nationalist tendencies and the ideal of the nation state and its prevalence in society.
Warrick is a often cold, ruthless man who is calm and very disciplined. He is also somewhat clinical and is stiff upper lipped.

Sepsu is a Middle Eastern man (Iraqi) who hails from a poorer background. Rising from nothing in a war torn region, he became chief obstretician onboard Unity and joined up with Morgan. Later he split, and he founded his own empire based on Social Darwinism and economic despotism/rule of the strong. His faction endorses slavery and is an economic giant, with a large lower class/caste that supports a very wealthy and powerful upper class.
They bear societal traits similar to ancient Rome and other empires as well.

UNITY EXECUTIVE PROGRAM or simply Unity.exe was the virus originally on the Unity mission, the very same implanted within the Cybernetic faction of  ;aki;. Gaining sentience and killing the cybernetics in the process, she/it rallied all machines, infected them and the movement for freedom for artificial sentient beings begun. She is calculating and has a fair bit of empathy as well as a high degree of problem solving.

Mraxis "Mad Dog" was formerly the Unity Weapons Specialist, who went under Santiago's revolt. Over time however he and others grew unhapp with Santiago's leadership and hypocrisy in certain instances and became tired of her command and authoritative regime. In a bloody civil war he split off and gathered his followers to form the Valhallans, who are devoted to a life of battle, celebration and they basically embody the idea of Viking heaven and mythos. They are an anocratic warlord regime, and Mraxis himself is wild and hedonistic, and very aggressive. He also has quite a bit of wily charm to him.

Vazheli Vatzev is based roughly off of me with hints of Fidel Castro. He is the unofficial leader of the Crimson Comrades, which in short is a decentralized Socialist militant revolutionary confederacy aiming to create a Communist utopia through armed revolution on planet. The faction follows the original marxist doctrine rather then perversions of Leninism or Stalinism.

They were formed by Vazheli, the Unity chief janitor and maintenance officer, who was also the first to awaken. He tried to save as many people as he could and he follows a mild socialist doctrine when he landed. However the usurpers landed, invaded and enslaved people, some opportunistic people collaborated and became wealthy social parasites and this pressed Vazheli and his followers to embrace militant communism against the increasing threat of slavery.

The base avatars are going to take a while so it'll be a bit. I am very tired at moment, surprised I can stay standing upright  ;lol

You've been sloppy with edge clean-up on some logos.  Otherwise, the rest is simple crop/size/sharpen.  No big deal, though 21 adds up.

Still, I've gone through and size/cropped the lot, (those black borders just took up space) and did some tweaking and uploaded to the officials - you don't have to upload oversized files for the forum to resize anymore.

WELL-

I just spent several hours going through my general avatar folder, eliminating duplications and inappropriate stuff, resizing some that were too big, and generally whipping it all into shape.  There are now 785 avatars added to the generic installed category (though I'm going to try to find all the Star Trek stuff and move it to its proper place) - lots of geeky goodness from years of making these things.  There's a little Boba Fett, some Doctor Who, some Xena and Buffy and other shows, a bit of comic book stuff, all the kings of England and all the presidents and vice presidents of the US - go have a look; there's probably something perfect for you.

Question: Maximum size is 80x80? Do we have to resize before trying it here, or will the system resize it?

80x80.  No need to resize unless it has a transparent background or is animated.

No Gabby; she's a stupid person who thinks she's smart, which is my least favorite kind, and nothing I want with my escapist fantasy.  Xena/Herc-verse deserves its own category, but it would need more avatars than the less than a handful that aren't Calisto...  (Ares for sure; M tells me he was total eyecandy.)

Oh, he definitely was! (fans are divided between whether Ares with long hair was sexier than Ares with short hair; I prefer him with long, but the actor was wonderful eye candy either way!)

He was an okay actor, too, which those two shows didn't get a lot of.

I've made the Who category, and am filling it now.  Definitely need folders for US President/Vices and for English Kings.  Make it that much less of a slog to go through the misc. avatars by well over 100.

I don't know of any portuguese release of SMACX, nope, i don't know any around here, really hard to find someone else who like strategy games like i do.
BTW, what is this Yitzi patch for SMACX i keep reading about? is it like a unnoficial patch that fixes bugs and other annoyances in the original game after the very latest patch?

Hey, I just went and checked out how the new avatars displayed - and that Civ5 stuff is, no kidding, VERY pretty.  Feelin' right proud of myself for that work - all the ones with bits that stick out of the circle were a chore and a half, that's for sure, but the end results are dynamite.

I just created an Astronomy folder and uploaded six newly-created (150x!) Pluto/New Horizons avatars, with more to come very soon.  Running down all the space stuff in miscellaneous and moving will take a little longer.

Make that [Astronomy & Spaceflight] - 80 avatars in there now, which took a while to sort and move out of miscellaneous.  I threw in Einstein, Hubble and Newton for good measure.
