But even 10% savings is more supplies that can be sent per trip.  Cutting a trip a year out would be huge, and likely pay for the thing in no time assuming their cost projection held up.

I'm all for such a thing -and wouldn't want a space elevator on a planet I planned to live on, frankly, as too dangerous- but I just don't believe it will happen.

I honestly don't either, but I didn't read too deeply in the study.

Would you feel the same way for alternative systems like skyhooks and launch rails?

Buster's Uncle:
I wouldn't.  Those don't tend to require gigatons of mass that might render a zone around the equator sterile in a failure scenario.
