Title: Support Bug
Post by: Dio on May 30, 2014, 11:15:46 PM
Morgan Industries is only supporting 1 unit for free instead of two units even though Morgan's Social support score is 0. Attached below is the relevant save.

I think I've seen this as well.  Was it related to finding Unity Rovers or unit cloning?  I've sometimes seen that a city will retain a 'used' support slot even if you disband or re-assign all units to that city.

When I open the save in SMAX with scient's patch, Morgan Industries has produced 4 scouts. Two are support-free and the other two are using 1 min/turn each. Are you using some other unofficial patch?

I am using Yitzi's Unofficial Patch Version 2.5j.

I'm fairly certain it's the same bug I've seen before, where somehow, it ended up supporting another faction's unit.  (My patch makes it so that other factions' units do need support in order to avoid exploits, though that does seem to have made this bug relevant.)  To determine what's causing it and fix it, I'd need a save from before that happens (if you use enhanced information, it should show how many more units it can support; as soon as that stops matching what it should be, I need the save from right before that.)

The next time this bug occurs I will try and make a save for you.

Thanks.  Keep in mind that it may first show up when you build a unit that shouldn't require support but does, but was really present beforehand, so you should probably use the "enhanced information" option to see how much free support you really have, and hence where it really starts to happen.

I'll keep an eye for this one also.  Has anyone looked into if free units might be causing it also?  I've noted that sometimes free units (unity/clone) sometimes get assigned to a city and sometimes are 'independent'.  Pretty sure I've seen this occur before Clean reactors

got this bug in my first game of 2.5j. while i only have post-bug save, i'll report this anyway:

"the flowers preach" base is bugged. i noticed the bug first time after starting formers building. not sure when it began.

one of the scouts built by the bugged base was cloned early in the game. one native life turret was captured near the bugged base.

if in this save you set the bugged base to build energy, it will in some turns display a message of formers being disbanded (even though with the bugged support the mineral output is still 3-3=0). no actual formers unit of the player is disbanded. during the next turn after that, the message repeats again. the support cost remains bugged anyway.

if i destroy all the supported units except one, and then build one unit in the bugged base, the graphic will show the 2nd in the list with a shield too.

Sounds like it's all due to supporting units of a different faction.  Unfortunately, a post-bug save isn't that useful once I know it's due to supporting units of a different faction; if you can get a pre-bug save (remember, using Enhanced Information lets you find where the bug actually starts, even if it's before it shows up in your support costs), that would be more helpful.

here is a pre-save of a support-related inconsistency. this time there will be free support for 3 units even though there should only be for 2.

activate the bug by attacking the spore launcher with the mind worm, it should result in the launcher being captured. it will for some reason have home base as "the flowers preach", which will then be the bugged base.

Is the spore launcher in fungus?  Native units in fungus get supported for free (as though they had the Clean ability.)  It's certainly not the bug I'm looking for (which will show up as having too little free support, not too much.)

All right, that covers it. However, what are the rules that determine whether captured native life become independent or get assigned to nearby base for support?

Distance to the nearest base, I believe; I don't know the exact details.
