Title: the other random crap thread
Post by: BlaneckW on April 27, 2014, 01:10:31 PM
I want this for my next computer
http://hackaday.com/2012/09/12/64-rasberry-pis-turned-into-a-supercomputer/ (http://hackaday.com/2012/09/12/64-rasberry-pis-turned-into-a-supercomputer/)

"It’s not a supercomputer as it can’t even compete with a modest beowulf cluster. Parallel computer, sure… supercomputer, no."
"Back in the day it might be considered as one :)"
"Do you want to compare eniac with a telephone?"

I think it's ridiculous that IT doesn't have a communist party yet.  I am deeply disturbed that I am not running a cluster computer.  If Lenin were still alive then by glorious Marx it would be done.

Is this thread about random computer crap, or random crap in general?

If it's the latter, I am happy to say that I have successfully made it through 30 days of Camp NaNoWriMo and earned a winner's badge. :)

Computers aren't the only random crap out there.  But the Itanium story is a comedic one.

Thanks. :)

I found out there's going to be another such event going on in July. I've already started making story notes for it.

I'd buy Windows 8 for a dollar
I'd probably end up regretting it, but then it's only a dollar

the hottest places in hell are reserved for Windows 8

If I had been indoctrinated into Communism that might be at least entertaining enough to make me appreciate the U.S. education system.

What is the big deal about indoctrination anyway?  We can always reprogram them, or at least that is what Pavlov tells me.

I decided to practice necromancy.

I want to portend that the future of this forum remains in danger from lackluster user activity.

Posting moar is always to first thing to do about that, yes - but bumping old threads for no particular reason isn't.

I suppose that includes the need to create more new threads on a variety of topics.

I hope to achieve great things with specially targeted advertisments. I just had an idea about advertisments. What type of special advertisment might you actually consider worthwhile?

Don't know that necromancy really covers what I specialize in.  I'd much rather distort the dead into some new creation than bring them back...

But lets say someone needet the right ambience to prepare his necromancy ritual, would you be in? ^^

Depends if they're paying.  ;)

I know it boils down to semantics to many people, but NECROMANCY, per se (as games/Hollywood have taught the general populace), is a very European Gothic style.  While I CAN do that (and admittedly HAVE, but only when I was planning to sell), it's not really "me".

I find myself in a more primal style, more voudoun (more Haitian than New Orleans at that).  (Working towards my own conception of what an ancient Mayan Halloween cult might have looked like.)

So, the more tribal you go, the more interested I'd get.  Some of the ancient Slovenian rites get close.

Alternately, let's go more Frankenstein, as I have a very soft spot for the mad scientists.

Necromancy rituals.  Literally bad juju.
Title: Re: the other random crap thread
Post by: Unorthodox on April 12, 2016, 10:08:08 PM
Not necessarily.  I mean...TECHNICALLY speaking any attempted communing with the dead is a necromancy ritual, thus one COULD make the argument attempting to pray to a Saint (do you capitalize that?) or even just talking to a loved one that has passed comprises "necromancy rituals".  And if raising the dead is necromancy, many of the world religions have a firm foundation.  A lot of real world necromancy is similarly beautiful.

Now, attempting to CONTROL the dead, that's another discussion, and can feel very wrong, yes.

Voodoo possession falls somewhere on the fence between the two.

Meh.  Mostly just gets a bad rap due to Hollywood and or bible proclamations.

Now, in my strive to be as authentic as possible during the whole headhunter phase, I did get some really for real authentic rituals and music set up once upon a time.  (I think before you at WPC even)  I can't be bothered to look up the proper names again, but I had two sets of rituals.  For lack of proper terms, one was "normal" (Pleasantly ASKING friendly loa to do things) , and one "angry" (DEMANDING more difficult loa do things).

The latter, I wouldn't go so far as to call it bad ju ju, but it was very uncomfortable and never used outside the initial test.  I can't say we ever had anything "happen" (keeping in mind I do believe in a lot of things and believe I've had things happen in other situations), but we'd get unpleasant feelings till I removed it from the house.

Thus began my quest to hollywoodise sections of that theme.

“There is no light without shadow and no wholeness without imperfection. To round itself out, life calls not for perfection but for completeness; and for this the “thorn in the flesh” is needed, the suffering of defects without which there is no progress and no ascent.” - Carl Jung.

;lol You going to go quoting the three fold rule on me?

One of the more interesting aspects of Voodoo is that you DO pay the loa, it's part of the summoning.  Different ones want different forms of payment.

The idea behind much necromancy is that the main price has already been paid in the death.  Saints, thus, are able to intervene on your behalf, for instance.  Or so the theory would go.

Day of the Dead is a great example of beautiful necromancy.  Sitting, eating with, and remembering the dead as they visit with you.  Nothing to be afraid of or avoid.

There's the mummy parade...I'm forgetting where...south America somewhere.  That's another great example.

Eh - the Wiccans I used to run with wouldn't come within a mile of anything more than the funeral reverence.  -And this wasn't a careful, prudent, bunch...

Reverence takes many forms.  I honestly feel I'm being respectful in making my monsters.  I honestly would like something similar done with my remains.  The boss feels otherwise.  Thus, I'll have a boring burial when I die, not my preferred: meat eaten by a cannibal, bones given to a haunted house.  I only can hope anyone that truly cares carves a jack out of something to send instead of flowers.

It's Heinlein's first or second of his last, adult, period - so yes; not to a disgusting degree, but there is some of that action...
