I've made and played another of my 360x180 maps - with a twist: You start with no fungus, rare native life, and moderate rainfall. The land masses are large enough for a decent start, but you will have to go to sea or raise more land.
As with the other map I uploaded, you will need to use techstag and/or put 50% research rate in the alphax.txt or you will transcend before any real confrontation happens.
I've had a lot of fun with it.

Do you have ever more then cursory contact with other factions on such maps, gwillybj?

They'll snoop around with Unity Foils and their home-built scout ships very early. They are not afraid to send out 2, 3, or 4 full transports in a group once they know where I am. It's not a bunch of scout patrols, either. I've been invaded by anything from Synth Laser Squads to Impact Rovers and worse before I have any armored units. I've had to retake coastal bases more often than I'd like to admit because of how I approach the tech tree. The games are long, but not boring. Somebody is always ready to send unfriendly stuff my way. When it comes time to employ Drop units, you better have your air defenses in place and some artillery ready, or you'll lose ten bases fast.
