Title: Custom Faction: Prodigal Sons/Rubric Marines/Thousand Sons: WORK IN PROGRESS
Post by: Oblivion on August 22, 2013, 07:13:29 PM
#BLURB
Employing sorcery in order to save his mutation-afflicted
Thousand Sons, Ahriman instead oversaw the transformation of
his battle-brothers into possessed, armored husks. Damned
and exiled by his lord Magnus the Red for the outcome, Ahriman
now scours the galaxy for knowledge that could subjugate the
power of his unknowable god Tzeentch.

Ahriman styles himself master of his own fate. Wherever destiny
may lead him, he's only a plaything in the twisted plots of
his patron god...

^           "Knowledge is power, and with the key to the Black Library, I shall claim it all."

More on this in the next few days...

About damn time someone did a Warhammer conversion. I'm an avid warhammer fan myself, and Ariete is as well. I would've done this myself but I had no time for it sadly.

I will state right off the bat: You should convert Planet for Psykers, and factions with high planet should have a better understanding of the Warp/Chaos gods. So any Chaos factions should have high planet so they can harness "demons" or the native life in game, as it'll make it seem like they ask the Chaos gods to create a psi tether to the wandering demons.

Orkz would probably not have anything for or against Planet rating, Human factions will probably have a weakness to it or degraded planet score.

Hope the suggestion is helpful.

Excellent, was wondering when someone would do a WH40k set :).

Are you aiming for balance with official factions, a higher power level, or a version with each?

Looking forward to this, especially if you expand the project to some other WH races :).

I'd personally go for crazy and just balance it with your own faction pack, a warhammer 40k conversion isn't exactly lore friendly to the originals and I doubt people would mix and match this for a balanced gameplay session.

Having WH40k crazy powerful fits pretty well (WH power levels are absurd, though some lategame AC tech would perhaps give them trouble), but I'm always in favor of having a version you can drop into normal games for a crossover without balance issues.

@JarlWolf: Your idea is very sound and would fit the universe very well.

My immediate intention is to do a pure graphics, text, and sound/music conversion of one of my factions for my personal use (though of course this would be released publicly as soon as it's finished). In the near future (~1-2 weeks) I may be interested in doing the same for one or more factions for the sake of a total W40K conversion mod, or for more limited projects (I've already got ideas for these, e.g. Chaos Undivided, Imperium of Man).

I may be a Civilization II and III veteran, but I literally started playing SMAC last weekend or so, so I'm still very new to the game mechanics (though I'm rapidly moving up in difficulty level). I can't make any statements about my interest or capabilities of balance editing at this time, though it might happen in the future (I will probably play around with it soon).

With that said, a Civ-style W40K themed game would be absolutely amazing!

If this is done... it may become possible to create a Battlefront-Galactic War-esque campaign where several factions vie over preset planets (one civ game-one planet), adding an additional level of strategy. We could create fan-made end-game scenarios for the W40K universe. Hmmmm, yes!

What races would you represent? :)

Do you mean races I'd personally play, or do some work on?

Do some work on. :) As in, there are 7 factions normally, if you wanted to one have one of each in every game.

E.g. Marines, Chaos, Orkz, etc.

We should split the Imperium up into Imperial Guard+Space Marines I think, because the IG and the Space Marines are vastly different organizations.

Alright, give me this weekend to flesh out my custom faction, which will function as a prototype for my future work.

I will be interested in cosmetically developing the following factions in some capacity, text, dialogue, and music is a given: Imperium of Man, Adeptus Mechanicus, Chaos Undivided, and House Harkonnen.

Hrm. If you need graphical help I can certainly lend a hand. As for voice overs I would just rip a line from a Warhammer game to be honest, I would be willing to voice but I doubt you want an old Russian man voicing anyone. I wouldn't really fit I don't think.

JarlWolf, I was thinking the same thing. Dawn of War series already has everything we could need. I wouldn't mind doing some of the voicing myself, just to see what I can do. I'm already doing some of that for a different project. I'll definitely be up to cooperating on this project, old man. Let's make it happen! I'll have some time this weekend to put into my prototype faction. We'll see how good that goes.

create custom faction on warhammer universe contest is a nice cool idea and recently i had thought me too but then i decided to more follow the trend of the game so i've take just some inspiration aspects (as bayco - rogue traders concept, imperial home, free companies). however we Fans can think about it, it could be an interesting interpretation mod. For the factions occure thinking about, surely it should do more than 2 alien factions and use council as a sort of imperial council of 4 human rogue traders or something for which they are opposite. i'm going to have launch, maiby something more come in my mind ...

look the use of a new essence for the logo, the banner (could be important for the warhammer facs): my latest custom factions have this prerogative and i guarantee the result in game, i've tested (i'm testing  :), i love this game  :D).
