Title: Favorite in-game quotes and/or movies.
Post by: Dio on August 21, 2013, 12:40:22 AM
Since I am a self-styled poll maker, both formal and informal, I have decided to start a few threads on a variety of topics. This thread is about your favorite in-game quotes and/or movies. If you have multiple, please list them. If two or more are equal, list them as being equal.
Quote
Some of my favourites are the one for the Planetary Transit system, Organic Superlubricant, The Longevity Vaccine, Network node qoute, and the Ascetic virtues are also pretty cool. I also really liked the Universal translator, and found the Cloudbase academy to be pretty kick ass.

Though, the one that always gives me chills is probably the Self Aware colony.
Or you can simply name them. How stupid of me.

Some of my favorite quotes include:

^  Mary had a little lamb,
^  Little lamb little lamb,
^  Mary had a little lamb,
^  whose fleece was white as snow.
^
^        -- Assassins' Redoubt,
^           Final Transmission

Industrial Grade Nano-Paste, Planet's most valuable commodity, can also
be one of its most dangerous. Simply pour out several canisters, slide
in a programming transponder, and step well away while the stuff cooks.
In under an hour the nano will use available materials to assemble a
small factory, a hovertank, or enough impact rifles to equip a regiment.
^
^        -- Col. Corazon Santiago,
^           "Planet: A Survivalist's Guide"

And the Lord God said, "Behold, the man is become as
one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth
his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and
live forever, we must send him forth." Therefore the
Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till
the ground from whence he was taken.
^
^        -- The Conclave Bible,
^           Datalinks

Already we have turned all of our critical industries, all of our
material resources, over to these . . . things . . . these lumps
of silver and paste we call nanorobots. And now we propose to teach
them intelligence? What, pray tell, will we do when these little
homunculi awaken one day and announce that they have no further need
of us?
^
^        -- Sister Miriam Godwinson,
^           "We Must Dissent"

And what of the immortal soul in such transactions? Can this
machine transmit and reattach it as well? Or is it lost forever,
leaving a soulless body to wander the world in despair?
^
^        -- Sister Miriam Godwinson,
^           "We Must Dissent"

Will we next create false gods to rule over us? How proud
we have become, and how blind.
^
^        -- Sister Miriam Godwinson,
^           "We Must Dissent"

And so we return again to the holy void. Some say this is simply our
destiny, but I would have you remember always that the void EXISTS,
just as surely as you or I. Is nothingness any less a miracle than
substance?
^
^        -- Sister Miriam Godwinson,
^           "We Must Dissent"

Men in their arrogance claim to understand the nature of creation,
and devise elaborate theories to describe its behavior. But always
they discover in the end that God was quite a bit more clever than
they thought.
^
^        -- Sister Miriam Godwinson,
^           "We Must Dissent"

Beware, you who seek first and final principles, for you are
trampling the garden of an angry God and he awaits you just
beyond the last theorem.
^
^        -- Sister Miriam Godwinson,
^           "But for the Grace of God"

We shall take only the greatest minds, the finest soldiers,
the most faithful servants. We shall multiply them a thousandfold
and release them to usher in a new era of glory.
^
^        -- Col. Corazon Santiago,
^           "The Council of War"

^I don't know but I've been told,
^  Deirdre's got a Network Node.
^Likes to press the on-off switch,
^  Dig that crazy Gaian witch!
^
^        -- Spartan Barracks March

Edit: I actually like all of them too much to pick favourites...

I sit in my cubicle, here on the motherworld (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKdkafwii_w#)

There are many incredible and inspiring quotes, but that one always stood out to me.

Great choice ete. I always felt it was a little depressing.

Oh, it is. But depressing in a.. way which feels right, if that makes sense. Seeing something you try to avoid as it is, and coming to terms with mortality.

I was a bit of a strange 10 year old when playing this first I guess.

Don't feel bad, I started playing SMAC when I was 11. So you are not the only one who felt that way.

Dio, coincidentally, I was thinking last week that we could use the occasional casual topic thread in here, (some people I've tried to recruit in the past said we looked TOO hardcore for them) so I really appreciate you doing this kind of thread.

Now, don't be sad. I'd like to think there's still something to look forward to when I hit my fifties.  :)

The Command Nexus.
The quote is probably a favorite of mine and I love to use it either in English or in French. (I have the SMAC guide in French).

I tried the experiment to advance-google "Information the first principle of warfare" and...you'll find 2 results on page 3 and 1 on page 4 which are posts by me on different forums!  8)

That's the one that comes with the Dream Twister, right? I'm pretty sure it's mean to be creepy, as a way of showing that the personnel at Assassin's Redoubt went crazy.

I think it's a small children song. Some anglo-saxon here would confirm?

Yes it is, but I was wondering the meaning. I knew this was from "Mary Had a Little Lamb" but I was wondering WHY they dais that.

When confronted with abject, mind scrambling terror, even the highly disciplined Spartan minds degenerate into a childlike stupor.

And maybe it's a metaphor. Mary had a little lamb, who's fleece was as white as snow.

Let's paraphrase that.

I had a man in my arms who's skin was ghastly pale and in shock. (the person themself is also terrified.)

I think the movie is purposely abstract because each person could interpret it slightly different while still getting the main concept of terror.

I live, I work, I die.
The dark of space my only sky,...

IIRC, the ballad of Sky Farm 3.

1. "The righteous need not cower before the drumbeat of human progress.  Though the song of yesterday fades into the challenge of tomorrow, God still watches and judges us. Evil lurks in the datalinks as it lurked in the streets of yesteryear. But it was never the streets that were evil."

(Shows that she's not really as anti-science as you'd think.  Cautious and suspicious, but not really anti-science.)

2. "The fungus has been Planet's dominant lifeform since about the time of the Lower Paleozoic on Earth. But when, once every hundred million years or so, the neural net at last achieves the critical mass necessary to become sentient, the final metamorphosis kills off most of the other life on the planet. It is possible that we humans can help to break this tragic cycle."

And of course:

3. "No longer mere earthbeings and planetbeings are we, but bright children of the stars! And together we shall dance in and out of ten billion years, celebrating the gift of consciousness until the stars themselves grow cold and weary, and our thoughts turn again to the beginning."

Good way of putting it Yitzi. I always felt that  ;miriam; was not as fanatical as the game made her out to be.

I think Miriam wasn't even very religious at the start: She just used religion to unite her followers. I see her as a less despotic and less cruel Yang in that regard, she has compassion and values liberty and freedoms but she is essentially a dictator that wants total control of her followers in order to survive. But later on she grows more and more fanatical I find, get higher in the tech quotes and she gets more fanatical, and more religious. And this makes a bit of sense I think, the ploy she plays out becomes her actual perception over time and the problems it brings.

Actually, like you said, this trait is what has allowed me to catch (or remember) things others have missed/forgotten.
