Title: BUncle faction - discussion thread
Post by: Buster's Uncle on July 30, 2013, 03:48:25 PM
How would one simulate a constant datalinks presence for a Buster's Uncle faction?

Wait - self factions ought to be right out, and I didn't mean to suggest otherwise.

I DO know where to find pictures of Kilkakon, though...

Probably techshare, and maybe a penalty to INDUSTRY.

That's much kinder than I deserved for such a straight line...   ;)

An idea for Busters Uncle Faction

Name:

The Republic of Busters Uncle

Ideology: Knowledge - He wishes to have not only the free flow of information, but more of it: to grow a community via gathering knowledge and different perspectives.
Anti Ideology: Police State- Not very fond of over regulating the community and surpressing people.

Stats would be:
1+ ECONOMY: His constant posting/transfers with EC leaves him quite wealthy, as the flow of information also includes the flow of EC. (BUncle is the richest person in EC on the entire forum, look at his post count!)
1+ PROBE: The amount of information sources able to be dug up and utilized is phenomenal.
1- EFFIC: Busters Uncle can sometimes miss some details, which can lead to problems. (Add in sleep deprivation of followers/himself.)
1- MORALE: BUncle is not a violent person and prefers cooperation over conflict.

He gets Techshare ability and starts off with information networks.

Also people I'd nominate for factions would be:

Kilkakon
Green1
Sisko
Yitzi
BUncle
maybe myself, but somewhat sketchy
EarthMichael

There could be factions for every member but if there was to be an AAR of this, I'd choose those members, as they are diverse enough to have different stats and ideals, and are also pretty active posters. (Earth is one of the prominent Multiplayers, BUncle is our highest poster and a large authority, Yitzi is a wizard coder/patcher, I am a factions maker/graphics artist mainly, Sisko is the Admin of the forum, Green1 is an avid AAR writer, and Kilkakon is a very prominent modder.)

There is others and please don't be offended, I'd include other people like Ryd and others like Sigma if there was space for them.

I actually AM a violent person, but I have a good record suppressing those bad instincts pretty well.

- to Industry because I obviously don't get any real work done spending my life on the Datalinks.
- to Efficiency because I tend to overcommit during my productive periods - which also do include that sleep deprivation; also, because a philosophy of leading people where they want to go is inherently inefficient, being focused on public happiness over actual results, and distaining badges and jack-boot tactics that DO sometimes make thing run quicker and neater if not overall as nicely.

...I tend to look at this sort of thing as an opportunity for jokes and (gentle) mockery, but you've hit on a serious faction idea, should it be possible to smooth out the details - computers -by way of Datalinks community- changing life, not as hackers or cyborgs, but the global village; grass roots, power to the people.  A, not fifth column, exactly, but reaching into every faction, every ideology, to bring people together to talk and understand each other better.  Not necessarily supportive of local government.  A little Morgan via black market back-channels, a little Peacekeeper unity/subversion of oppression wherever it's found.

There's possibilities there for a real faction strong enough to make me want to take my name off it as looking too egotistical...

Note on you being not violent:

I am only a person viewing a screen half the planet away, and while I could make assumptions on your personality its a really stupid and arrogant thing for me to do that on my part. So I am only going off of what I have witnessed on the forum, and you seem to avoid violence, even if in nature you have a violent mindset.

I myself am very violent and I try my best to suppress it, but I am diagnosed with PTSD and I don't contain it all the time. And its probably evident even the way I act here, let alone in real life.

As for the egotism of the factions, two things.

1. This is Factions based on forum personalities, of course its going to be egotistical. But that's not necessarily a bad thing in this case, its done for humour and parody, not for glorifying people.
2. It represents an ideal you hold and you should be proud to affiliate with it, very much so how I am proud to affiliate with my ideal. One could say its arrogant to put your name over it, but I say that its having the courage and balls to say, "I support this."

Mind this is a rough draft and things are subject to change, but keep in mind these are SMAC factions. Sure they can be funny in this case but we want serious ideals to be associated with them as well, SMAC is a game based heavily on ideology and philosophy, and it'd be a crime to not involve such things with the factions.

(Here, I guess I succeed largely in being the guy I want to be.)

I just hate to waste an opportunity for everyone to poke fun at me on a serious faction...

Maybe we should move the stuff about this to Modding and leave this thread to organizing Sigma's idea?

Fair enough: But note we'd be giving proper ideals to everyone based on their preferences, and one could always just take those ideals and put them in a more serious format.

And as for moving it, yes go for it. And apologies Sigma.

Edit: and note its poking fun at everyone involved.
Edit 2: Also Unorthodox could be a neat faction idea: Green agriculturalists, among other things.

If we really want to do this faction contest then we need some rules and some structure to it; moreover I feel like this thread actually kind of defeats the purpose of said contest, because it turns creating each faction into a community thing rather than the product of a given writer trying to interpret another's persona into faction stats.

I propose the following rules:

1.) Each contestant is allowed one entry
2.) You cannot make a faction based on yourself
2.) If a contestant is also the subject of an entry, he can't be allowed input on the creation of that entry

Can we agree on those rules?

I concur, though on the third point, its not so much affecting the creative process but some people may not want themselves to be subject for a faction. I personally don't mind but some people may be offended, so we should keep that in mind.

I think those are good rules.  It spoils the fun if I have any say in a BU faction.

And likewise, I am interested in how someone interprets me as a faction.

Rule 0: Faction subjects need to be volunteers.

Also would it be a good idea to have these drawn out of a hat, so to speak? Do it Secret Santa style?

Perhaps. I am never good at this weird selection thing, so I'll let you folks figure out how you'll do that...
