Title: Double-Dipping: The Same Polar Square Worked Twice.
Post by: Buster's Uncle on April 02, 2013, 03:21:02 AM
I can't say as this is very high-priority, but as you can see in the screenies below, Virgin Soil of the Gaians and Garden of the Deep of the Consciousness are both working the square to the left of the crawler simultaneously.  Definitely a bug.

...This is part of how the game treats polar squares like international territory, of course.  In the attached save, note the crawlers sitting in the Newbs faction base squares at the south pole.  They don't get evicted when the Newbs insist I pull my units out, either.

Polar squares have caused some of the weirdest glitches, freezes, and crashes I've ever seen in SMACX. I avoid them like The Plague.

Interestingly, I noticed this same thing years ago, along with the game's reluctance to draw faction borders on polar squares, and just dismissed it as a "feature", not a "bug".  Yes, it probably really is a bug - strange things can happen at or near square 0,0 and related - but at the time I justified it as "these squares surround the pole so square 16,0 is in reality touching square 80,0 on the other side of this flat map, so faction borders get pretty dicey here".  Or, "all the factions nicely agreed that no one could own polar squares".

No, I don't expect anyone to agree with me...*I* don't even agree with me now.  But that was the thought process back in 2002.  I suspect the game actually isn't assigning ownership to those squares, for some reason.

-Turns out CivII has the same kind of glitch, only on the invisible East/West border, usually in the middle of the ocean...

Definitely a map border issue, the poles.

Besides the glitches, bugs, and such you all have mentioned, I've also disliked the cheat-level mobility that polar land provides.  For that reason I generate all my maps with polar land disabled, which you can do in the scenario editor.  Dunno if that choice is available in the normal random generated maps.

BTW, my observation of similar in CivII here:  https://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=22051.0

Random maps sometimes do and sometimes don't have polar land.

If by "cheat-level mobility", you mean the ability to move land units between continents (and potentially at very high speed, with mag-tubes), I feel I should point out that even when polar land is present, it is frequently not attached to any continents.
