Title: The Future of Consoles
Post by: testdummy653 on February 07, 2013, 03:13:10 AM
Anyone else concerned about the rumors that the new Xbox and Playstation console will block used games?

I personally follow a lot games and I hate paying more than 30 dollars for games.
So if this happens I will buy less..

Any thoughts?

Sorry I should make it clear that I was referring to current rumors that both companies' future consoles will block used games through various methods.

I will change the OP to clarify this.

Well that doesn't sound very nice of them - and probably not a good business strategy, long-term.

That's actually illegal in Australia.  Console mods to run backups and old games have already been tested legal in court.  PlayStation was the one that last the case, and the other two didn't put up a fight after that.

However, also with modded consoles you can never log in to do multiplayer nor can you patch the game if it has available patches. To do so places the MAC address and serial number of your console on a blacklist and can never hook up online again through XBL, PSN, etc.

Now... I would be willing to compromise like this: if something happens to my copy, let me download this again at no additional cost as long as I have it registered to my account. Also, lower price since there is no need for boxes or cds.

I think we are heading to the days of DLC and unique game to account. The game stores will go the way of Blockbuster video.

My Wii is fine online.  I can even do system updates.

They won't lower the price for online/downloaded games, any savings on manufacturing goes to the company. Just look at the price for downloadable games versus games in boxes, there is no real difference.

I prefer digital copies already, myself.  If I buy a new game on the PS3, I check to see if they have it in the PSN store first, and barring some out of whack pricing, will get that version.  (some games, especially older ones, are more expensive in the PSN store)

They also bought that game streaming service supposed to be tied to the PS4.  That intrigues me, but I don't know that I would pay a monthly fee for such a thing without a serious trial period first.
