Title: Unofficial Patches for MAC?
Post by: testdummy653 on January 20, 2013, 01:57:44 AM
Is there any chance that Mac SMAC players might see some of these unofficial patches? Or are they already usable with the Mac version?

Also I'm extremely happy to find a forum dedicated to SMAC and SMAX. :danc:

Good question.

I have heard you guys have boot camp to run Windows under OS X? That could be a possibility.

Also brings the question up of SMAX under WINE for the Linux distros.

Yeah; he welcomed you first, but I do, too.

...I'll ask scient if he knows anything about that; kyrub and Yitzi should see this soon enough - I imagine carbonized versions should ideally be made available, there being more than a few Mac users out there playing...

Yeah Boot Camp could work, but I (and I'm sure other mac players) would rather have a carbon patch.

I would be very interested in a Mac patch as well.  I am the sole PC user in my household (mostly because I do software development for the PC, or I would have a Mac myself; I know, I could run bootcamp, but the people I support have standardized on Dell, so it is best for me to develop on a Dell as well).

Anyway, my wife and all seven children are Mac users running Gog SMAX, so I would love to get a patch for them.

Just curious, if I am running the scient patch, and they are not, is a multiplayer game between us going to be screwed up?  If so, what would happen?

Thanks!

From what I can tell, the Mac version is probably designed for an architecture other than Intel x86 (Macs moved over to x86 some years after SMAC/SMAX were released), which makes unofficial patching substantially more difficult (it means learning a whole new language, possibly with a new way of doing things.)  It might be that GOG's version is different, though, but even so it'd probably have to be redone as a whole, making it a lot of work when I'm sure that emulators can provide an alternative.

I was wondering about the GOG.com SMAC version for Mac. Has anyone tried it on 10.8?

I have tried it on Mountain Lion, that's 10.8, right?  It works fine.

Awesome.. I will buy it (again) from GOG.com when I can get SMACX for 10.8 (Mountain Lion) as well.

If it works for 10.8 then the GOG version was design for Intel x86. 10.8 has really deprecate Carbon.

It uses some kind of encapsulation engine; I can't recall the name offhand, and I am on my PC at the moment.

You CAN apply any unofficial mods/patches to the mac version.

I was happy to see that they were in fact using encapsulation (in this case some version of Wine), because that means that we don't need Mac specific binaries. It isn't the most efficient, but with a game this old, it doesn't really matter.

First off. Welcome to the Forum.

Second, is there any type of steps or processes for this?

Thank you! Happy to be here - love the game, just found it on GOG a week or so ago, and have already wasted countless hours of my life!

So, the installation on Mac is exactly the same as it would be on a windows machine with a few pre-cursor steps:

1) Go to the place you installed the game.
(probably in your Applications Folder, it's called "Alpha Centauri Alien Crossfire.app" or just "Alpha Centauri.app" if you don't have the expansion - if you can't find it, push CMD + Spacebar to open spotlight and search for it)

(*) If you would like to keep a vanilla version of the game, copy the "Alpha Centauri Alien Crossfire.app" to another location and rename it. You can copy it back to your applications folder after it is renamed.

2) Right click on the application you wish to mod and say "Show Package Contents."

3) There will be an alias for "drive_c" - double click it.

4) From here, just go into the "GOG Games" folder and you will find the "Alpha Centauri" directory.

5) Install as you would on windows!
(in case you don't know, you just need to copy the relevant files into the "Alpha Centauri" directory to install)

That's it - hope it helps. I'm mostly playing on a windows desktop, but my laptop is a MBP so I was very excited to see they were including a Mac version. Oddly enough, about two months ago I was scouring the internet for a copy of Alpha Centauri. Thank goodness for GOG! They have a great collection of classic titles that run on modern systems.

Awesome. I will have to buy it from GOG and try it out. Thanks!

Is cmd tab disabled in the mac version?
