Nice political cartoon/comic.

This is as good a place as any to report- I just got an e-mail from my senator explaining that he joined a large bi-partisan coalition in support of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act for 5 years. Basically to keep us safe, but people across the political spectrum will be watching for signs of abuse to civil liberties.

Well, I fear that the nose of the camel is in our tent.

Sigh.

Have you told your senator that he's fired?

No, I haven't answered him.

I'm an older/wiser/cautious  kind of guy, and he's going to be around for 4 more years.
If I do blow him off, I'd like to do it with an I told you so letter.

It would do more good to tell him so now...

GRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I suspect you're right. I'll think about it today as I'm doing stuff, research FISA tonight to see what's changed, and draft it tomorrow, as time permits.

Yeah, sorry.  I can see why you'd be cautious if you were still active in local Republican stuff, but I gather you're not, so...

As Cap might ask him:  "How can you claim to love America when you obviously don't love the values it was founded on - the values that made America great?"

That's actually Captain America on McCarthyism and its sort.  Whether he'd extend it to the Bush years (which had some similar stuff, but nowhere near the same extent) is more of an open question.

I bought the issue if What If in question off the stands back in the day.  Don't bother me with your facts ;) - Cap's point still stands, and still applies.

So it's not "Captain America on the Bush years", but rather "Captain America on the McCarthy years, which BUncle thinks still applies to the Bush years".   ;)

Okay, Captain Pedant; if you want to play that game, it's actually "Captain America on the Secret Empire years, which BUncle thinks still applies to the Bush years".

Senator McCarthy appears nowhere in the story and does not set its events moving. :P

The Force is not with me, lost my post earlier today in reply to this.  My actual political activity is more on state issues. If they remain settled, I will remain aloof, as I don't see myself as a Republican anymore, although I've assisted them here.

My research indicates many things. 1)The original article didn't get all of their facts straight. 2) The uproar caused the amendment to be reformed. 3) The bill to which it was to be attached never came up for a vote, like a lot of stuff in the last Congress. 4) The bill that my senator actually voted for and e-mailed me about had to with overseas communications, and requires a judicial or presidential warrent when it involves an american citizen or corp. While the ACLU opposes this, too, it's not as intolerable or as relevant to our everyday lives as the amendment in your article.

At this point I'm inclined to thank him for keeping me informed on legislation related to communication privacy, and keep him aware that I'm watching and hope to influence him if and when the domestic surveilance bills rear their ugly head again.

What do you think now, Buncle?

If it's something different, it's something different.  We engage in overseas communications all the time here, but then this is not a terribly private venue - and warrants.  Cap don't have a problem with warrants and due process.

I wouldn't fire your Senator over that, no.

Just hope that the Dems come up with someone better than Biden (and is a good draw - Hopefully one of the more moderate younger ones) or it will be "Four More Years"...

sheesh, 23 at last count, IIRC

LESS moderate, please - the Democrats have been little but gutless collaborators for going on 20 years now - and not bright enough to beat some very weak opponents, at that.

Step one would indeed be to drop the old men who already blew their chances...

I'm serious.  The Democrats have a weak field again - fire the Pig, roll the dice on empty shirt Pence - and at least, you don't have to be -as- ashamed to be a Republican.

From an interview with that one Political Sci Prof whom has predicted the Party (not the candidate, but the party in charge of) that has won the election for the White House, he predicted that Republicans would be re-elected.

THE CANDIDATES in whatever race in the past, DO NOT EFFECT the outcome, this is based on the Party.

AT THE TIME of the interview:

1) Impeachment has still to be done.
2) The Current party holding the White House was 6 points away from getting overturned.
3) An actual Impeachment (House sending to Senate) would subtract 2 points from this total.
4) Senate Outcome does not matter for this.
5) Still in flux is Economy; Military and International things that if goofed up, could reduce the score.

So, if they blunder with a few other things, then they might lose, but if not, expect them to win next term...
