Title: Site offline
Post by: sisko on October 30, 2012, 12:02:17 PM
After a short offline period on Friday, AC2 was down for more than 3 hours tonight (GMT).
It turns out that our server has suffered some mysterious "issues":

Couldn't find a better thread to note that I couldn't logon this A.M.: Wednesday, April 9, 2014, between 7 and 8 EDT. Everything's cool 8) after about 8:15-ish.

That would be a failure partly on my part and partly of the hosting service.  I deposited slightly over six months' worth of server fees late last month and assumed it would deduct automatically, as it did the last time I made a large deposit, last year when I assumed half-ownership.

I was wrong not to be more diligent and less trusting.  It was fixed within 15 minutes of me getting online this morning.

Ah, that was why I couldn't connect to the forum around noon today. :P

Oh.

Noon in Euro time.  You threw me for a second there; I fixed it before 8am, EDT...

...With my money.  No refunds... ;)

Our site was offline for approximately 4 hours yesterday. The outage was caused by a ddos attack on the servers of our host.
Mysql issues are still present, but should be fixed within 24 hours. Please report anything that's malfunctioning.

We are terribly sorry for any inconvenience caused by this incident.

Sorry for the blackout. It looks like it was related to our daily backup.

Maybe it would be worth moving to weekly backups? Daily is good, but if it's resource intensive weekly should be fine for most purposes.

The site was offline again for 20 minutes or so. It looks like our host doesn't want our money, anymore..
We are very sorry for the outage.

Does this there's going to be a change of host in the foreseeable future?

Probably.

-Yesterday was a very frustrating day, for me.  I couldn't get onto AC2 for a whole hour - and later, my internet access went away entirely.  Combined with a very late start to the day, due to insomnia, I was only on here a few hours.  ;grrr

I don't know whether it belongs here or not but there is often some forum interruption, like this morning (CET).

Known issue with the autobackup we're running at night - second time this week I've had to buzz sisko first thing (he rebooted and the problem went away) when I got up and didn't want to have to deal with tech problems -or anything complex and frustrating at all- yet.  Our three tech guys have been informed - it's t_ras' fault ;) but I really hope Draz takes an interest.  The other two are currently in RL time-heck...

There should be an outage every night, US Eastern time, while the backup's in progress, but I think t has it put up a page I made with a big pic of Roze and a joke about tagging our data when that's going on.

I'll move these two posts to a better thread...

Talking about malfunctions, is something wrong with the wiki? I see a number of "Warning: invalid argument supplied..." lines at the top of the page.

I've set up a four-way FB message with our tech support, since that works best for sisko and t_ras, and emailed Draz to look in.  If you had the problem only just now, it may have been caused by Draz' server fiddling on the backup problem.  I've reported your report, there.

We take these issues seriously, and apologize for the inconvenience.

Yes, for about five fours, 8:06 to 12:45 EST.  Some over-ambitious server maintenance went pear-shaped, I'm told.  We're trying to get things shipshape -performance has been less than optimal- and setbacks happen.

Problems of aggressive nut-and-bolts tech maintenance are the sort you want to have (as opposed to the common let-things-slide kind) in the long run.

Happily, my man Draz has fixed this.  His power is MAX.

I think t has it put up a page I made with a big pic of Roze and a joke about tagging our data
For the amusement of AC2's many fans, attached is the latest version of said page.  Chances are not terrific that the Wiki will be up independently, but the rest are .htm pages I uploaded to our server that will work if the server's working and you see this page.

Note to our tech guys: I have a copy in the BU Junk folder -which probably ought to be moved up a level- but I'm aware that when I put it up last night, only people going to a bare "http://alphacentauri2.info/" could see it - if someone would make me a short index.php that would direct users to the down page -or something I could just easily activate/throw up in a hurry when it's the forum software and not the server- and put it in the folder, that would be convenient, me being the one who's most likely to be around first for a downage...

Draz has put up an AC2 mirror test site, BTW, which is going to make some tech things incredibly easier.

-Also, my Firefox will actually log on, there.

We're having server problems the last hour or so -- seems to be our host, whom I have the obnoxious duty of paying for their crappy service this month.

We're migrating hosting to somewhere professional as soon as I can talk a tech guy into doing it - it's way over my head.
