Building an Alpha Centauri megagame, a polico-military simulation intended to be played over an electronic discussion forum just like this one. Includes some custom faction ideas.

Think of a megagame as cooperative fiction writing, with a set of agreed governing principles and a referee who acts as editor.

What factions would you have added to the game of Alpha Centauri? To help us think about this matter, I offer some intellectual guardrails, which I (think) I got from this (https://paeantosmac.wordpress.com/2015/02/23/mechanics-of-narrative/)blog.

• What is the fundamental truth of the universe? For Zakharov, it is that everything is empirically knowable. For Miriam, it is that the experience of the Divine is an essential part of being fully human. For Morgan, it is that everything--everything--is a transaction. For Santiago, it is that the strong do what they can, and the weak suffer what they must. (Hi, Thucydides!) And so on.

• Why did civilization on Earth fail? Skye thinks it failed because we poisoned the Earth. Yang teaches that it failed because impulsive individuality destroyed our ability to get the right things done. Morgan says it didn't fail at all--we simply exhausted Earth in the same manner that one exhausts a battery or a can of fuel. Cobb and Cohen suggest that we didn't seek, name, and excise the darkness in our own subconscious. Zakharov claims that we forsook science to indulge in useless spiritualism. Pahlavi insists that we cared overmuch for the weak.

• What is needed to preserve the survival of the human species on Chiron? Lal tells us that we must maintain the free flow of information. Marsh wants us to reclaim our physicality. St. Germaine proposes that we trade liberty for the security provided by hierarchical government. Morgan says, change nothing. Landers wants you to be a good neighbor.
