Title: "Impossible" burger
Post by: Unorthodox on August 16, 2019, 04:31:38 AM
Just saw the add for Burger Kings meatless whopper.

So...anyone here going to try one of these things?

No.

It looks great, though!

There's a lot of salt. Not too much to eat, but I'd have to budget sodium for it. The theory of my diet books says no soy and I haven't broken that rule yet. Chances are it's the kind of a thing I'd finish when somebody else ordered it and didn't like it.

Well, I haven't eaten at Burger King in ages; the food's just not very good.  Add in that this thing is made mostly from soy (mmm, xenoestrogens) and I'm going to answer with a resolute "no."  If this kind of thing eventually reduces demand for beef and thereby lowers the price, great.

I tried the Beyond Burger a few weeks back. It mostly tasted like ketchup, but that's probably because it was slathered in ketchup. I'd definitely like to try the Impossible Burger.

So, the commercial made a big deal of "taste testers" being shocked that it tasted just like a regular whopper.

Well, back in the day I worked at BK, and my sandwich go to back THEN was the veggie whopper.  This was prior to any of the meat substitute burgers, even prior to gardenburger.  So, it was just a whopper WITHOUT the beef.  Just load the bun up with the toppings.

If I wanted to get cheeky I would order a veggie whopper add bacon only mayo lettuce and double tomato.  A BLT.  But the 'veggie whopper add bacon' would always give people a pause.

Anyhow, my point.  The veggie whopper tasted just like a regular whopper back then.  BK's beef has no taste.  Period.  I have no doubt this might taste just as good or even better.  But, I'm not that interested with my increasing list of plant based allergies when I don't have a full ingredient list in front of me.

BK has been going downhill for a while now.  In the CF area, they are even closing up before 10PM and no late Drive through.  It's p-'ed me off several times, as I had tried to get to them before 11PM (after working an event and was wanting just a couple of Jr's to go) and not even found the drive through open.

As with any franchise, that stuff largely comes down to the local owner/management.  I've got one here that's new and really does a good job, even if I confused the holy hell out of them trying to order the old school veggie whopper.  There's another you couldn't pay me to eat at again.
