Talia stepped on my Kindle Fire (hand me down) Probably 2nd or 3rd generation


With summer coming, it's entering reading season for me, and the handiness of a device overpowers my preference to paper when trying out new books.   

Is there anything better out there? 

It occasionally hurt my eyes, though I can't really put a finger why. 

The paperwhite worth it, for instance?  I don't really need the netflix/tv/web capabilities of the fire.

We have a paperwhite.  I'm comfy enough with it, though the wife mainly uses it for homeschooling stuff.  When we first got it, I spent a day reading a library book on it.  We're going on a trip in two days, and I've loaded a couple more library books to read in the car.  It's comfortable to read, and the battery lasts a looooooong time.  Fairly cheap, too, IIRC.  What else do you need to know?

I always use a non-white background (off, beige-ish... like pup paper color) instead of plain Black & White.  Helps my eyes and thus, any possible headaches.

You might need reading glasses, too...

I have both. The paperwhite/voyage  is the easiest on the eyes reading ever. ( I also had the Kindle2, which I gave to family and is still working,  and the Kindle DX which was my favorite for it's 9.7"screen size.)

The nice part about a paperwhite or voyage is they fit in your pocket. It's a dedicated reader. It does one thing very well. It doesn't play audiobooks, and IIRC, it doesn't do the interactive books and puzzle programs, either.

The downside is that while you can change the size of the text, maps and tables are essentially pictures, and don't enlarge.  So if you really want to know what's going on , say, in a military history, you'll probably want a magnifying glass.

I would rather read on the paperwhite. I use the fire more the way people use cell phones when I travel, or for reading something in color. It seemed pricey when I got it. I have no idea what these things cost now. I  think of the voyage/paperwhite as the kindle for kindle enthusiasts.

No, paper I'm fine.  Just some screens I can't stand to read on.  The fire was hit and miss, but I never could put a finger on it.  my guess is glare in different lighting.

That's the thing.  The fire was handy as the kids would netflix off it (hence why it got stepped on) when it wasn't being used as a reader.  But both Talia and Alec have their own fire's now, and Kyle has some other tablet.  So, really it's a reader only I need.  Sounds like a paper white/voyage is more up my alley, assuming similar storage size/price.

This year, I finally got my first reader. And after reading opinions, watching on youtube, what people say about readers, I got this one:
Kindle Paperwhite, 15 cm (6") High Resolution Display (300 ppi) with Built-in Light, Wi-Fi. It is model 3 (Paperwhite 3), as far as I know.

It has WLAN, no 3G, but it's ok, as I mostly plan to connect from home and my home wi-fi.
I've read, that now must-have is the light. The setting is max at 24 or 25, but I use 10. When I checked, how it looks without the light, it is really difference. I think my eyes would get tired much quicker.

I got it only, because it was on sale, initially wanted to get simpler reader. But I think they get even cheaper now, since there is even newer model? On Amazon.com it is $99 now?
It's ok to read, the light makes it pleasant to use. It is my first experience with e-paper, so I do not have comparison, but I know, how it looks when I turn light to 0.

Reading Spartan Chronicles presently on it. I made pdf to mobi/epub? conversion with Calibre.

After remembering that you are subject to light induced headaches, I'd say it is worth it.
