Title: Is there a way to remove the social media integration?
Post by: Syn on March 18, 2018, 07:00:35 PM
Is there a way to remove the social media integration? I see Facebook publish links above posts and at the bottom of every page there is a dedicated section to posting Facebook comments. I'm not very keen on this kind of crossing streams and would love a method to remove these besides blocking their elements via an adblocker.

I have not used SMF in quite a few years. Long before there was any sort of whisper of social media integration in forums. It's possible that this is a setting that already exists that I just haven't seen... if so, please direct me.

Oh Lord, I wish.

I feel like you do, though I have to tolerate the stuff for promotional reasons - it doesn't help loading performance, nobody has ever used the comment besides me a few times that I know of, it takes up space, and Facebook, it goes without saying, is of teh Devil.

[shrugs]  I go back to 1980 as a user, with a trash80 coco, but the tech is not nearly so strong in this one as I need.  No setting I'm aware of.

I only see the comment boxes in Theory of Everything, IIRC, and Civ6.  You?

Correction:  pretty much all the on-topic subs have the "Facebook Comments" line at the bottom in threads, but no actual box in the line underneath, currently.  I see it's in here, too, but not Rec Commons.  That crap's had years to become invisible to me.

I'm not seeing the publish buttons, either, anymore.  Need to check in another bowser.

Okay, thanks. I did a quick Google search and didn't come up with any results for Facebook integration in SMF so I'm of no help in figuring out an actual solution here. ;lol

Same as makes no difference in Chrome - except in here, surprisingly, of where I've checked.

I believe I'll raise with my co-owner and the other tech admins to have a look at the FB integration; some features stopped working completely years ago.  If nothing about it's doing any good promoting us, at least reliably in common browsers, we ought to dump the junk as potentially toxic and a drag on performance at best.

Don't make any drastic changes on my account! I was hoping for a user-side toggle. If you guys decide it's not useful and it needs to go for everyone, well, I certainly won't complain...  ;cute

Raised.  Let's see if any stands and delivers.

I know of no option, but I do tend to think it's not useful and it needs to go for everyone.  -Just, above my tech paygrade, something I know you're used to hearing.

Punishing Facebook can only result in good flowers all over the cosmos.

Well Wall Street punished them recently, but latest newspaper said they're considered ok again, up +4 of some metric I forget what.  That 3rd part political consultant that snooped everyone's info to run a pro-[Sleezebag] (?) campaign (I forget) was down quite a lot of points though, maybe lost 17% of its value as a company?  Can't remember.  The big spread in the local paper is Facebook will continue to snoop you just fine, despite the "corporate image" points it gets from getting rid of 3rd party political outfits.  If people kept reading articles like that, maybe some people would wake up and actually care.

I'm thinking an ongoing pernicious generational problem though, is not only are a fair number of people raised in apathy as would be true of any generation, but there's a surrounding culture of publicity rather than privacy.  People do everything on Facebook for others to look at, that previous generations would have been more inclined to regard as private matters.  So that becomes a kind of new normative standard, a form of peer pressure.  "What, you care about privacy?  FFS why?"  I wonder if the internet has any "wakeup" stories of people who finally decided Facebook wasn't in their best interest.  Myself, I never got on board in the 1st place, so I wouldn't really know.

I think you'd find the last page or so of this thread of interest: http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=4272.0 (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=4272.0) since you have cogent insight into the Facebook problem...
