Title: why won't this video embed?
Post by: bvanevery on February 16, 2018, 03:04:45 PM
I'm trying to get this video about SMAC to embed.
Gaming History: Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri "The greatest story ever played" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0u7uUWYE_9M)
I use the Avea Media button to submit this YouTube video.  It gives me an error: "The embed URL was either bad or from an unsupported site. If you're trying to embed a picture, make sure the Foxy! add-on for Aeva Media is installed."  But the URL clearly works just fine.  What gives?

I've noticed that embedded videos seem to have a # at the end of the URL.  That doesn't help though:

Is it the quotes in the description text?  Nope.

Does the URL have to be repeated for it to embed?  Nope.

Does it not like much of anything in the description text?  Nope.
cheesy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0u7uUWYE_9M)

Does a video maker on YouTube have the ability to block a video from being embedded elsewhere?

Remove the s from https and it embeds automatically.

Huh.  Well I gotta wonder why.  Although I won't waste brain cells on it.

Because the forum isn't "secure" in the http sense. ;)
While on my cruise the site was blocked by the server on the ship.

In a related matter,  Firefox (at least) warns me that the log-on here is 'not secure' and hackers could see log-on data. ("Do you want to continue?  Click 'Yes' to expose your gonads to public scrutiny.")
What would it take to "secure" the site?  Or at least the log-on?  Or is it actually our trick to get more Russian, Chinese, North Korean, Pakistani, Romanian, etc. folks to visit the site?

I'm not terribly concerned, but not entirely comfortable either.

What warning?  I use Firefox all the time, no problem.  Only time I ever see "not secure" is due to a wifi connection not being established yet, such as at a grocery store or coffee house.  Maybe it's a problem specific to your ISP.

Specificly: when I click on the log-in box for "user name", Firefox does not simply enter or suggest the name, there is text before the name it offers saying that the log-in process is not secure.
I, of course, click on the name anyway.   That is the only place and time I get a warning.

Also, in front of the site address in the address box above the page window, there is a circled "i" for 'site information'.  Clicking on it gives the comment that "connection is not secure" and "Your connection to this site is not private. Information you submit could be viewed by others (like passwords, messages, credit cards, etc)".

Belatedly I realized I'm permanently logged into this site.  So I logged out and back in again to see what would happen.  I didn't get any warning, but then again, surely a cookie has been stored on my behalf.

This I experience also in Firefox.  Let's see about MS Edge.  Had a fresh login, no cookie, because I never use that browser.  I didn't get any warning for logging in.  However, their "circle i for information" says the site is not encrypted and to "Be careful here".  So the verdict is that the site isn't secured.

Should it be?

How much damage could be done?  What effort would it take to secure the site?  I am ignorant on both those points.
There's little or nothing directly concerning the site that would interest bad actors looking for money unless stealing info here could give them access into other parts of someone's online activity (is that possible?).
If I knew how, I'd secure the site just because of my lack of knowledge, and (of course) as a normal extension of the sub-clinical OCD which allows me to enjoy SMAC(X) in the first place :D

Maybe I'll change my password, por si acasa, and leave the rest up to Buster'sKnuckles and the gang.  Whatever y'all decide is fine with me.

I assume THE ENTIRE INTERNET is insecure, regardless of what anyone tells me to the contrary.  Consequently, I have a "low security password" that's the same for all sites where I'm really not worried about my account going <POOF>.  I guess I have a problem now though, that I've produced so much content on this site, that I really would care about all of it going <POOF>.  Of course I have archives of my mod work sequestered in various places, including offline on some DVDs, but my piles of AARs aren't on nearly so firm a footing.  I really should figure out how to do a backup of all this stuff one of these days.

For anything critical, like banks, or sites where I use my credit card, or my email, I have completetely separate passwords that nobody knows but me.  They're not written down anywhere either.  Hope I don't ever have a stroke!   :P  I'm a little young to be worrying about that though.  Oh, and my physical machines have different passwords too.  So that's basically 1 layer of "don't care" and 5..7 additional layers of "you ain't gettin' in here".  Have fun devising your own stratagem, and remember...

THE INTERNET IS NOT SECURE
